From Davos to Munich

Two major conferences in Europe are taking place against the backdrop of a deepening transatlantic rift. But both are also accompanied by intense discord within the United States. The WEF is being held amid large-scale protests in Minnesota. Munich, meanwhile, is overshadowing the Epstein case.
At scandalous hearings in the Senate, Howard Lattnik, the current US Secretary of Commerce, admitted to visiting Epstein’s island in the Caribbean. However, he denies participating in paedophile parties. Democrats are already eager to get his scalp and are demanding the resignation of one of the main lobbyists for trade wars, who declared the end of globalisation in Davos.
Moreover, a decision is expected soon from the Supreme Court, which may rule that many of Trump’s tariffs violate the US Constitution. Another supporter of protectionism, Peter Navarro, is already practically out of the picture. So, closer to the congressional elections, we can expect various tariffs to be rolled back.
At the same time, the issue of funding for the Department of Homeland Security, which the Democrats want to punish for conducting deportation raids, remains unresolved. If the White House does not make concessions, the DHS will be left without budget funds by Saturday. And the Democratic Party is demanding that all raids be stopped and that ICE agents be handed over de facto.
This clearly weakens the negotiating position of Trump’s team, which is on its way to Munich. In Davos, the American delegation already had to concede on the issue of Greenland. Now the Europeans hope that they have already weathered the worst of the storm. And now they can begin their counteroffensive against the administration in Washington.
