Two French twin brothers who became the faces of a famed 1980s science TV programme before winning notoriety for their cosmetic surgery have died within a week of each other from Covid-19 after refusing the vaccination, friends and family said.
The death of Igor Bogdanoff, 72, was confirmed on Monday evening by his lawyer Edouard de Lamaze, as well as his agent.
He died just six days after his brother Grichka Bogdanoff passed away in a Parisian hospital, also of Covid , the lawyer confirmed.
Instantly recognisable in France and a favourite in the country's glossy celebrity magazines, they also claimed to have taken part in the creation of Bitcoin .
"We were implicated, very early, in the birth of the cryptocurrency," Grichka told French TV show Non-Stop People in June, with their claim largely based on their friendship with Japanese mathematicians behind the currency.
The brothers became well-known in international cryptocurrency circles and a subject of mockery, largely thanks to an online meme and conspiracy theory that they controlled the markets.
Igor announced earlier this year that they planned to launch their own currency, "Exocoin".
Neither of the brothers had been vaccinated against Covid-19, their friend Luc Ferry , a former education minister, said last week.
Ferry told Le Parisien newspaper that he had urged both of them to get vaccinated "countless times" but they refused on the basis that they were "very sporty, without a gram of fat".
"Grichka, like Igor, wasn't an anti-vaxxer. He was anti-vax for himself," Ferry said, confirming that both of them had contracted Covid. "I told them that it was grotesque, they were mad!"
In an interview at the beginning of December, they raised doubts about the new generation mRNA messenger vaccines developed by BioNtech/Pfizer among others, despite their approval by health authorities.
France is currently facing another major wave of Covid-19 infections caused by the highly infectious Omicron variant, with hospitals warning that intensive care units are overwhelmed with mostly unvaccinated patients.
The identical twins shot to fame as the heartthrob presenters of the hit 1980s science show "Temps X" on the country's TF1 channel and then carved out careers as amateur and often controversial science writers afterwards.
Born to a Russian-origin father, a painter, and an Austrian aristocratic mother, they grew up in a castle in southwest France.
"At the age of 11, we underwent tests which showed that we were part of 0.01 percent of the population with an IQ of more than 190," Grichka once claimed, feeding the mystique of the twins as freakishly intelligent.
Critics would accuse them of plagiarising the work of others, and of promoting pseudo-science in their subsequent publications and media interviews.
Igor married several times to aristocratic French women, fathering six children, while Gricha remained single, one of few differences between the two men who would often finish each other's sentences during interviews.
In their later years, their looks, socialite lifestyle and legal problems stemming from their attempt to relaunch "Temps X" kept them in the public eye.
They faced prosecution for allegedly cheating a millionaire with mental health problems out of several hundred thousand euros -- charges they denied.
They also denied having plastic surgery to explain their transformed looks, but admitted to having undergone "experimentations" which gave them their extreme high cheek bones, as well as large lips and pronounced chins.
"We are proud of having faces like extra-terrestrials," they said in 2010.

Anna and Lucy DeCinque have revealed the arrangement they have to make their shared relationship work in the bedroom
Identical twins Anna and Lucy DeCinque have revealed they share every aspect of their lives - including time in bed with their boyfriend.
The 30-year-old sisters baffled ITV's This Morning hosts Philip Schofield and Holly Willoughby as they bluntly admitted they sleep with him at the same time .
They said: "We're in the mood at the same time. He's a lucky guy, He needs double the energy, he gets double the love and double the attention."
Although the sisters admitted people have an issue with their arrangement, they have stood by their decision.
"They can have their opinions but this is the way we want to live our lives," they argued. "We're not hurting anyone and it makes us happy.
"We're always going to be together. Because we're with each other 24/7 of our lives it's so much easier to share a boyfriend."
The girls are both in a relationship with mechanic Ben Byrne, who is also a twin - but not an identical one.
Even though the two aren’t actively trying for babies, yet, they told Australian current affairs and discussion show The Insight their plans when they do start planning a family.
Anna said: “If I got pregnant Lucy would definitely get pregnant straight way — because our bodies need to be the same.
“We would try to make that happen, definitely. We are not trying right now — we love children and kids love us, but it’s not the time for us.
“We would have to be exactly the same — even if we went through IVF at the same time.”
The pair shared their story on the show, as part of a double episode about twins.
Following the programme, the twins spoke to the Herald Sun (which weren’t able to say which of the girls was speaking as “their voices are pretty much identical too.”)
One of twins said: “We actually felt a bit intimidated by the other twins, because we always thought we were the centre of attention.”
The Insight investigation looks at what the latest twin research can reveal about humanity at large — for social and scientific researchers, twins are ‘the perfect natural experiment’, especially identical twins who share 99.9% of the same DNA.
The pair became famous after they were dubbed the 'world's most identical twins' on a Japanese prank TV show, when facial recognition technology could not tell them apart.
The two - born just a minute apart - have reportedly blown £130,000 on cosmetic surgery to make sure they look as similar as possible.
The list of surgery they have had includes breast implants, lip fillers, fake eyebrows and eyelashes to make sure they look exactly the same.

The Bogdanoff twins, 72, died within a week of each other from Covid, after both reportedly refusing the vaccine.
The fraternal twins were once considered French television heart-throbs and were massively popular during the 1980s.
As presenters and producers, they have been the brains behind — and faces of — various television shows covering both science and science fiction, after developing an interest in astronomy as children.
Although they were once known for their good looks, the brothers, now 68, are now barely recognisable after each undergoing a several plastic surgery procedures.
The brothers were placed under formal investigation for scamming “a vulnerable person” out of €800,000 in 2018.
Igor was previously fined €1,500 for bursting into the home of his ex-girlfriend — model and biology student, 23-year-old Julie Jardon.
Grichka Bogdanoff came out in defense of his twin at time, explaining in an interview with Closer magazine that his brother has a passionate temperament.

“He is sometimes too intense when switching from love to friendship. He is a passionate character and sometimes it results in fiery behaviour.”
The twins have been involved in several controversies during their years in the spotlight.
The most notable of these, the “Bogdanoff affair” alleged that the brothers wrote nonsensical advanced physics papers that were then published in reputable scientific journals.
The papers, which were alleged by their authors to culminate in a proposed theory for describing what occurred at the Big Bang, were accused of contributing nothing to the study of physics.
In 2010 it was reported that the pair were each understood to have a number of chin and cheek implants, as well as botox and fillers.
As a result they have regularly been called “freakish” and described as “cat people” by the media.

The pair have ties with some of Europe’s old noble families.
Their grandmother who raised them was a member of the noble Kolowrat family of Bohemia who sent shock waves through European high society by getting pregnant by their grandfather — the African American tenor Roland Hayes while she was married to another man.
On top of that, Igor was married to both Countess Ludmilla d’Oultremont and Amélie de Bourbon de Parme, the daughter of Prince Michel of Bourbon-Parma.
Grichka Bogdanoff died of Covid-19 in late December 2021, while his brother Igor passed away just six days later from the same illness – they were 72 years old.
Neither had been vaccinated against Covid, apparently believing that their ‘lifestyle’ would protect them.

“The arbitrary measures taken by the Belarusian authorities against journalists violate press freedom,” Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian said in a statement.

“I call on the Belarusian authorities to reverse these measures without delay,” he added, saying that the crisis in Belarus requires “the establishment of an inclusive national dialogue”.

“Repressive measures against journalists cannot help,” he said.

Belarusian authorities on Saturday withdrew the accreditation of journalists working for several foreign media, including AFP, ahead of a major demonstration Sunday challenging the results of the presidential election.

Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko, who has been in power since 1994, has faced unprecedented protests since the disputed August 9 election in which he claimed a landslide victory with 80 percent of the vote in a poll

that the opposition says was rigged.

Belarus government spokesman Anatoly Glaz said the decision to revoke the media accreditations was taken on the recommendation of the country's counter-terrorism unit.

He did not specify how many journalists were affected by the measure, but foreign media including the BBC, Reuters and Radio Liberty reported the withdrawal of accreditation of several of their journalists.

Belarusian journalists working for Agence France-Presse also had their accreditation revoked.

The French pornography industry systematically uses violence against women, according to a report presented Wednesday by four French Senators, after six months of auditions following several high-profile arrests of producers and directors.
The Senators want the issue to be taken seriously by the public, and for the government to make the fight against the “commodification of bodies” a political priority.
The aim of the report, which the authors titled ' Porno: hell on set ', is to “alert the government and public opinion about violence perpetuated and spread by and in the pornography industry, as well as on the sexist, racist, homophobic and unequal representations that it generates.”
The four Senators, from four different political parties, started their mission in February after several porn actors, directors and producers linked to the video platform French Bukkake were arrested as part of a larger inves
