This was exploited by many who used their position to sexually exploit the female staff. This led to many a maid ending up pregnant . This would lead to them.being dismissed. A generous family might give the girl money to support her and the baby plus a reference so she could work again. Others might not acknowledge that the child was theirs . In this case the women would be sacked and quiet often end up in poverty and the work house.
For minor misdemeanours, probably being given extra or more unpleasant work to do. For breakages around the house, wages could be docked. But the ultimate sanction was being sacked without a reference, which would make it difficult to get re-employed in a respectable establishment.
I’m sorry if you were hoping for something more juicy, such as corporal punishment, starvation or being locked in a cupboard. Didn’t happen.
