Proofreader for the US Edition of Magnificat
* Monthly freelance proofreading assignment for the English-language editions of Magnificat.
* Remote work, approximately 1.5 week per month.
* Proofreading and fact-checking of editorials, articles, biographies of saints, meditations, and other original content.
* Verification of Scripture readings and selected texts against the liturgical calendar and provided schedules.
* Excellent written English required, along with strong attention to detail and respect for deadlines.
* Familiarity with Scripture, the liturgical year, and the Catholic tradition highly desirable.
* Previous experience in proofreading, publishing, journalism, or academic editing preferred.
* Particularly suited to religious men and women, theologians, scholars, or experienced Catholic editors.
Magnificat is a monthly Catholic devotional publication distributed throughout the English-speaking world. Combining the daily Mass texts, Prayer for the Morning/Evening, meditations drawn from the spiritual tradition of the Church, articles, and biographies of saints, it seeks to accompany its readers in their prayer and spiritual life throughout the liturgical year.
We are currently seeking a meticulous, reliable, and motivated proofreader to assist with the preparation of our English-language editions.
The position consists of proofreading each monthly issue before publication. Working from a PDF file, the proofreader will review the editorial content of the magazine, correcting spelling, grammar, punctuation, typographical errors, and occasional inconsistencies. Particular attention is given to editorials, articles, biographies of saints, introductions, and other original texts produced for the publication.
The daily meditation texts will also be reviewed, although these passages are generally drawn from previously published works and have already undergone editorial revision. Likewise, the liturgical texts themselves do not normally require line-by-line proofreading, since they are checked earlier in the production process. The proofreader is nevertheless expected to verify that the biblical readings correspond to the liturgical calendar for each day of the month and that the Prayer for the Morning/Evening selections match the schedule provided by the editorial team.
Each issue comprises approximately 450 pages. A significant portion of the publication consists of recurring liturgical material that has already been carefully verified. The role therefore requires discernment and sustained attention rather than exhaustive textual revision of every line on every page.
The work is carried out entirely remotely. The proofreader is given approximately one week to complete the review and return the corrected PDF. In addition to the US edition, the successful candidate will also proofread the corresponding UK edition. Since the UK version is largely derived from the US edition and differs mainly in the lectionary texts and linguistic adaptations for British English, this additional review usually requires only one or two extra days.
We are looking for someone with an excellent command of written English, a strong eye for detail, and a proven ability to work independently while respecting deadlines. Familiarity with Scripture, the liturgical year, and the Catholic tradition is highly desirable, as is previous experience in proofreading, publishing, journalism, academic editing, or a related field. Candidates with a background in theology or religious studies would be particularly welcome. We would also be delighted to hear from members of religious communities or engaged lay Catholics who possess the necessary editorial skills and a genuine appreciation for the mission of Magnificat.
