What freelance journalism rates look like in 2025 and what they mean for the profession

The Rates

The major national magazine rate for features is approximately 2 to 3 dollars per word at the top tier. The digital media rate, which reached 1 dollar per word at some outlets during the venture-funded peak, has largely declined to 0.15 to 0.50 dollars per word at most digital publications. The rates are higher than in 1980 and dramatically lower in inflation-adjusted terms.

The Economics

A freelance journalist producing one 2,000-word feature per month at the top-tier rate earns approximately 4,000 to 6,000 dollars per month in feature income before the business expenses of freelancing. The majority of freelance journalists do not produce one top-tier feature per month. The median income from freelance journalism alone is below the poverty line in most metropolitan markets.
