Though women and femmes have been trying to free the nipple for a long, long time, the official Free the Nipple campaign was started in 2012 by Lina Esco when she was making a film with the same title. The campaign and film have a message of equality that has spread like wildfire, along with the #FreeTheNipple hashtag: Women and femmes should be as free as men to have exposed nipples in public. What's more, laws (and social standards) that allow men to go topless and not women unfairly sexualize female breasts. Freedom to expose nipples can be practical: Breasts feed children, while toplessness keeps you cool and tan-line-free during the summer. It can also be powerful, giving women and femmes ownership over how they present. As the campaign has gained traction, it's garnered plenty of celeb support. Ahead, 16 times famous folks showed they were totally down with freeing the nipple.

The younger Jenner sister shared an image to Instagram of herself wearing a corset over a bodysuit, her nips pressing through the fabric. She captioned the image with a black heart, presumably to match the corset.
Her nipples might be slightly obscured due to a bit of computer magic, but they're definitely free. Jenner casually showed off her mesh bra top to her 97.5 million followers.
Kendall wrote about her affinity for going topless last year on her very exclusive website and app , saying she's "cool with her breasts" and doesn't mind going braless. True to her word, she's worn multiple sheer tops since then — it's basically her signature style.
Chelsea Handler LOVES to free the nipple , even though Instagram gives her grief for it. That doesn't stop her from advocating for toplessness on Twitter, and sometimes on a horse .
Amber Rose is not here for slut-shaming, and her support for #freethenipple is just part of what she does to prove that. She posted this striking photo to Twitter with the campaign's hashtag to show her participation in the movement.
Plenty of folks want to free the nipple so they can breastfeed in public without judgment. This photo shows Alanis Morissette breastfeeding with an "I Voted" sticker — multitasking on point.
Miley Cyrus frequently posts #freethenipple content on Instagram — but don't go scrolling through her account hoping to find it, as the photos often get taken down. In fact, this one is captioned, "I still can't believe that my fake tits get censored."
Cara Delevingne used her platform to make a point about how differently the world sees the nipples of men and women. In this photo, she pointed out the similarities between male and female breasts, showing the absurdity of it being okay for a man to post his nipple while she has to censor hers. The post is tagged #freethenipple, and her point = made.
It's honestly no surprise Lena Dunham is a fan of freeing the nipple. She's been seen wearing a T-shirt from the Free The Nipple film , and posed wearing pasties in this pic before the 2015 Golden Globes.
Bella Hadid went totally bare for her French Vogue cover and hashtagged the Instagram snap both #Freeingthenipple and #LoveYourBody, highlighting the fact that self-love and nudity can go hand in hand.
In 2015, the supermodel shared a topless photo of herself to Instagram to promote her upcoming book with Taschen . While the post was later removed, the photo lives on — accompanying #freethenipple hashtag included — on Twitter .
Suki Waterhouse cheekily supported nipple freedom with this Instagram of her wearing a bathing suit so close to her skin tone it almost looks like it might not be there at all. She made her stance clear with the post's caption , "Free the nipple."
As Bella Thorne once told Playboy , "There’s this effort to try to shame a woman’s sexiness by pulling a cover over it, but I’m a woman who loves skin." She backs this up with her fashion choices — this semi-sheer outfit proves she's not shy about showing some nip.
Did you know it's totally legal to be topless in NYC? Scout Willis does, and she took full advantage of it here — even though Instagram took this photo down. She reposted it on Twitter , where it's alive and well (and abundantly retweeted).
Chrissy Teigen has had her fair share of #freethenipple censorship drama with Instagram before, so she cleverly avoided having this photo deleted by covering up with a can of hairspray. She's also been known to breastfeed baby Luna in public.
Olivia Wilde has long been open about her support for people's ability to breastfeed openly — in her 2014 Glamour cover shoot, she breastfed her son.
Emily Ratajkowski recently opened up to Allure about being comfortable with her sexuality and her body, and that's a huge part of the Free the Nipple movement. Here she is posing nude for Love magazine .
Rihanna has been freeing the nipple since before #freethenipple was a thing — in fact, she didn't even know the campaign existed when she was asked about it at the 2016 CFDA awards. However, this list just wouldn't be complete without her, given that she was literally kicked off Instagram for posting her nipples too many times (she's back on the app and her feed is mostly nipple-free, now). She just has . So . Many . Good . Looks .

Women in six U.S. states are now effectively allowed to be topless in public, according to a new ruling by the U.S. 10th Circuit Court of Appeals .
The decision stems from a multiyear legal battle in Fort Collins, Colo., where a city ordinance forbidding women from going shirtless in public has now officially been ruled unconstitutional.
It's an outcome that affects more than just one town. Since the 10th Circuit encompasses six states — Utah, Colorado, Wyoming, New Mexico, Kansas and Oklahoma — the decision means it is now illegal for any town in those states to create a law forbidding public toplessness.
What started as a small-scale fight has turned into a major win for the 'Free the Nipple' movement , a global gender equality campaign that emphasizes women's rights to choose how they display their bodies.
The Fort Collins law received its first blow in February, when the 10th Circuit originally deemed its anti-topless law unconstitutional . The court's ruling determined the law was based on "negative stereotypes depicting women's breasts, but not men's breasts, as sex objects."
In its decision, the court also pointed to nearby cities such as Denver and Boulder, both of which allow women to be topless in public. Neither of those towns had women "parading in front of elementary schools or swimming topless in the public pool," as Fort Collins officials had argued was a risk.
After that defeat, however, the city still had the option to appeal the law or take its issue to the Supreme Court. Fort Collins finally decided against that earlier this month, though, stating it had given up on fighting the law it spent more than $300,000 trying to protect .
"We made a huge impact way beyond Fort Collins, and we were just trying to start a conversation," Brit Hoagland, one of the plaintiffs in the original lawsuit, said of the victory. "And that conversation reached to so many more people. It’s a miraculous achievement I didn’t think I would see in my lifetime let alone so soon."
Andy McNulty, the attorney who argued on Hoagland's behalf, said it was obvious to him that laws like the one in Fort Collins should be considered unconstitutional.
"Any law that says, 'Women are prohibited from...' is unconstitutional and really just intolerable in a society that should treat women as equal to men," McNulty told KGUN-TV .
However, not every case has gone in favor of 'Free the Nipple.' A court in New Hampshire voted to uphold a similar law earlier this year, meaning women in that state could be charged for having their shirts off in public.
The 10th Circuit acknowledged its potentially controversial ruling, noting its opinion in the Fort Collins case was " the minority viewpoint ." Still, Hoagland remains hopeful that this victory can change the national conversation.
"Our win can show that even in other places that there's still hope, and that things can change maybe from a different angle," she said.

I was doing a lot of hot yoga classes
and I was just really uncomfortable in class
having to wear these really tight uncomfortable sports bras
and I'd see like, these guys practicing next to me
in like, these itty bitty little brief shorts,
and it just like really kind of annoyed me,
especially considering that yoga is about being comfortable
and so I just felt like I had this literal barrier
that was preventing me from fully enjoying that flow.
The sports bras and all of those different things
can be so cumbersome, and it was super freeing.
Ooh, we're dangling a little bit too much,
but just more from a comfort perspective
than from a self-conscious perspective.
The very first time I did it, I felt powerful.
I felt really in touch with my body.
I really wanted to make it a point for the yoga
to be accessible no matter what your body type is.
especially from like, larger chested women
is like, Oh, well, I won't be able to do that.
You know, My body's not gonna behave,
no matter what your body shape or size is.
Doing more work on self-confidence and self-love
and I think this space is a beautiful space to create
that sense of safety and comfort to give you
the confidence that you can take out in the world.
