What the libertarian argument for and against government regulation of social media content looks like

The Tension

The libertarian analysis of content moderation faces the specific tension between two libertarian principles: the freedom of speech that the libertarian tradition most consistently defends, and the private property rights of the platform owners to determine what content they allow on their property. The government regulation of platform content moderation conflicts with both principles in different ways.

The Two Positions

The two libertarian positions: the property rights libertarian supports the platform's right to moderate content as it sees fit, as the expression of the platform's right to determine what occurs on its private property. The free speech libertarian is concerned about the concentration of communication infrastructure in a small number of private platforms whose moderation decisions effectively control the public discourse.
