Without the knowledge that free climber Alex was alive and on stage with the creators when they received their (deserved) Oscar for this, I probably wouldn't have made it through this. During the final free solo climb of El Capitan in Yosemite Valley my palms got increasingly sweaty from the images and the knowledge of the incredible risk. The unbelievable artistic feat aside, this is also the portrayal of a relationship dealing with looming death. One can only hope Alex is done now, his lovely girlfriend would deserve it. Probably the most fascinating, exciting and dizzying documentary ever.

The most intriguing aspect of this documentary for me is that there is something almost akin to an 'observer effect' in what we see here, as the presence of the film crew does threaten to affect the event they are recording and it becomes obvious for us too how all this can only end.

"That's the most magnificent crack on planet earth."
This is said un-ironically near the beginning of the third act in the documentary, Free Solo. I have nothing to add to this and no point to make, but I was the only one who laughed out loud at this in the theater and wanted to share.
Coalescing the ideas of an unattainable itch that pushes an individual's drive to the (literal) edge and that of the worth of attaining that itch Jimmy Chin and Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi's Free Solo presents this quandary of maximizing life in thrills rather than length. Our subject, Alex Honnold, feels no obligation to maximize his life and it is this unique outlook that intrigues us to Honnoldï¿ 1/2(TM)s journey as much as his ability to scale seemingly flat surfaces does. Most would look at what Honnold dreams of doing and weigh the risk versus the consequence and decide the consequence was not worth the risk (easily, I might add), but the high chance of death isnï¿ 1/2(TM)t as great a risk for Honnold as having to go through life knowing he never took this risk that would truly satisfy him. Chin and Vasarhelyi do as much as they can in exploring the psyche of their subject in the process disclosing there were no real emotional bonds formed in Honnoldï¿ 1/2(TM)s childhood, that his father was what might be diagnosed as autistic by todayï¿ 1/2(TM)s standards, and how this lack of affection built the Honnold that exists today. This is countered with Honnoldï¿ 1/2(TM)s first-hand accounts of his childhood which interestingly enough tend to conflict with his motherï¿ 1/2(TM)s perspective. There is no debating Honnoldï¿ 1/2(TM)s brain works differently than most, but it is the level of transparency and care between Honnold and Chin (who is heavily featured in the doc himself) that really hammers home the contrasting feelings of the pros and cons of having the aspiration to even attempt something like free soloing, much less succeeding at it.
At twenty minutes short of two hours the film does feel a little sluggish in parts, but the last half hour in which we watch Honnold work to make it up the 3,000 foot granite face of Yosemite's El Capitan is one of the most thrilling sequences caught on film this year; there is no escaping the sweaty palms or shortness of breath. Everything about the sequence is absolutely nerve-wracking even if you know or are pretty sure you know the outcome. The musical score could have very easily gone in two completely different directions here and it would have been nice had the editors chosen to go with a few more wide shots so as to understand the breadth of the challenge, especially in this final sequence, but I understand why they save as much for a certain moment as well (even though they still didnï¿ 1/2(TM)t hold it long enough). As much as Honnold risks and is the center of attention here the documentary crew and cameramen are rock stars in their own right allowing the audience to kind of ï¿ 1/2getï¿ 1/2Â? why Honnold was so taken with this challenge, this need to conquer, by giving us a slight glimpse into the feelings one must experience when coming to the end of such a journey.

This awe-inspiring National Geographic documentary is as much a celebration of U.S. parks and wilderness as it is a record of one of the most audacious feats in the history of mountaineering.
The visuals are stunning, offering head-spinning views with the comfort of total safety.
Free Solo...is a jaw-dropper, both in what is documented and its visual impact.
A visually dizzying but also thought-provoking film about one man's pinnacle of achievement.
I just got so swept up in it all. I love hearing what others are so passionate about. Completely taken by Alex's story.
Impressive... But the question for me remains: Why on earth would anybody do this?
Nail-biting and terrifying, [Alex] Honnold's ascent to the top of El Capitan is some of the most propulsive and suspenseful sports footage ever documented.
...you begin to wonder when we'll get to the actual climb. But when we finally do, those 15 minutes or so of footage are as phenomenal as anything you'll see this year...
The documentary feels more like a gripping piece of television than a fully fleshed out feature-film narrative. ... Either way, the athletic feat is undeniably impressive and the footage is inherently breathtaking.
Free Solo ... is a vertiginous puzzle both visually and conceptually.
In the end, it feels like a privilege to be a part of his process and experience even a fraction of his journey... from the relative comfort and safety of our seat.
About passion and obsession, dealing with fear and striving for grandeur, pushing the boundaries of what's possible.

Free Solo is a 2018 American documentary film directed by Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi and Jimmy Chin [2] that profiles rock climber Alex Honnold on his quest to perform a free solo climb of El Capitan in June 2017. [3] [4]
The film premiered at the Telluride Film Festival on August 31, 2018, and also screened at the 2018 Toronto International Film Festival , where it won the People's Choice Award in the Documentaries category . [5] It was released in the United States on September 28, 2018, where it received positive reviews from critics and grossed over $28 million. The film received numerous accolades, including winning Best Documentary Feature at the 91st Academy Awards . [6] [7]
The film devotes some time to documenting its own production process, with director Jimmy Chin and his camera crew (all experienced climbers themselves) discussing the challenge of not endangering climber Alex Honnold by distracting him or pressuring him to attempt the climb at all. According to director Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi , this was solved with a lot of practice. [8] To record sound from Honnold, who was often too far from the cameras to use a wireless microphone, the filmmakers created a special recording device and had Honnold carry it inside his chalk bag . [8]
The film was made by National Geographic Partners , [9] which at the time of the film's release was majority-owned by 21st Century Fox , with the remainder owned by the National Geographic Society . [10]
Free Solo grossed $17.5 million in the United States and Canada, and $11.1 million in other territories, for a total worldwide gross of $28.6 million. [1]
The film made $300,804 from four theaters in its opening weekend, surpassing Eighth Grade and An Inconvenient Truth , respectively, for the highest per-venue average of 2018 and of a documentary all-time with $75,201. [11] It expanded to 41 theaters in its second weekend, making $562,786. [12] The film grossed $859,051 from 129 theaters in its third weekend and $1 million from 251 theaters in its fourth weekend. [13] [14] During its fifth weekend, it earned $1.06 million from 394 theaters, bringing the total box office gross to over $5 million. [15]
On review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes , the film holds an approval rating of 97% based on 152 reviews, with an average rating of 8.21/10. The website's critical consensus reads, " Free Solo depicts athletic feats that many viewers will find beyond reason – and grounds the attempts in passions that are all but universal." [16] On Metacritic , the film has a weighted average score of 83 out of 100, based on 25 critics, indicating "universal acclaim". [17]
Writing for Variety , Peter Debrudge said, "Apart from a slow stretch around the hour mark, the filmmakers keep things lively (with a big assist from Marco Beltrami's pulse-quickening score, the nail-biting opposite of Tim McGraw's soaring end-credits single, "Gravity"), featuring test runs at Zion National Park 's Moonlight Buttress and the nearly sheer limestone cliffs in Taghia, Morocco ." [18] Richard Lawson of Vanity Fair called the film "bracingly made" and wrote, "I left the theater invigorated and rattled, in awe of this charismatic man's accomplishment but scared that it will inspire others to attempt the same ... But maybe Free Solo ' s detailed, transfixing portrait of their hero will at least show some sort of barrier to entry, communicating to those eager wannabes that very few people indeed are built quite like Alex Honnold. And thank goodness, in a way, for that." [19]
