I am having a referral contest, for 2 weeks. The member is supposed to get members, and the referred members have to make 5 posts and then post in introductions who they were referred by! Then at the end of the 2 weeks, i wil caluclate who got the most referrals. and the winner gets the ipb 2.0

I am asking for pppl to let me know if it worth it, and if it will bring us some traffic..

Well to be honest the first question that comes to mind is as you are starting a new board and need new referrals and posts, why on earth would you be giving away a free license so someone can go and make their own site to compete with you?
I think its illegal to distribute even the free trial version of IPB, a law suit was filed against a couple of sites who were distributing the free IPB 2.0 once IPB went all paid.

It def isnt allowed, i have a paid version and they were onto me as it wasnt showing up right. Hey if you are going around giving them away then you better not have anyone that will report you.

Anyway im going to give a reffer comp as well, i asked my members what prizes they would be interested, i am mostly likely at this moment in time to give away £30 for the comp.

Even if you bought the board yourself, It would still be against Invision's terms. Becuase how are they supposed to know that you won't use it again after you give it away. I wouldn't do this at all. Stick with simple stuff, like t-shirts or mousepads.
You could just transfer the license to the people, like with vBulletin. Or, do it however The Sandman is giving it away on that article contest

Yes, but you also don't get free upgrades to 2.1 and such... That's the main reason i bought IPB... my members wanted it, and i wanted free upgrades.
My question is a little different... having a prize is a good idea but how does a forum software program giveaway relate to your users at all? Yes your visitors use a forum but how does someone who wants to talk about ps3 find value in message board software, especially given that they are on your message board? I'm not seeing the connection or the value for your users...

It just doesn't make any sense... vbulletin, ipb, any forum program for that matter. Your visitors come to talk about ps3 games and you want to give them php software? How does that relate? If you were a member of taz and being asked to refer friends in order to possibly win a prize would you? Would you if the prize was a pair of size 4 shoes? Unless you happen to have tiny feat, I doubt it.

Your members are very unlikely to be interested in a forum program as they aren't necessarily webmasters, in fact, they are coming to your site to talk on your forum because they do not have their own and probably would not know the first thing about starting one. Giving away forum software just doesn't make sense and truthfully it's just asking for more competition.

Instead of trying to give away what doesn't make sense why not sell your vbulletin license (or ipb license if that's allowed) and use the money to buy something relevant to your community like a ps game?
