9. Ninja Scroll (1993)
Set during Japans war-torn feudal era, Ninja Scroll follows a nomadic ninja named Jubei as he wanders the land masterless, lending his well-trained, deadly hand to anyone with a worthy cause and enough cash. When he stumbles across a woman being raped by a hideous beast reminiscent of the Thing from the Fantastic Four (not that Ben Grimm would ever dream of doing such a thing) he doesnt stop to ask for a fee. The woman is Kagero, a female ninja with a blood disease that makes her skin turn pale and poisonous to the touch, though that doesnt stop people from trying. The monster raping her is Tessai, one of the Eight Devils of Kimon whose aim is to overthrow the shogun. The scene is pretty lengthy and pretty graphic, with the monster hitting every base at his own leisure before being interrupted. Yoshiaki Kawajiris film is blessed with some of the most sleek and fluid animation outside of Akira, with dazzling sword-play and brilliantly bloody action sequences earning it a 100% Rotten Tomatoes rating, despite the kind of overly graphic content that sometimes sends western viewers running for the hills. The violence and gore on display here are second only to the jaw dropping sexual content.
