Bei der Arbeit / At Work. Ebensee, Wien | AT · um 1920 – 2011 (© PP · Ewiges Archiv) Die Almerin/Sennerin mit Sichel in der Hand, mit dem kurz vorher abgeschnittenen „Buschen“ Enzian oä. in der Hand, im langen Arbeitskleid, mit Holzschuhen, steht prägnant im Vordergrund, fast im „Goldenen Schnitt“, die Sicht bleibt frei auf die Almhütte und die Landschaft. Der Amateurfotograf Johann Promberger, so scheint es, hat um 1920 diese Aufnahme sehr gut komponiert. Er dürfte kein Stativ verwendet haben, darauf deutet die leichte Unschärfe hin, es war wohl zu schwer, um es auf die Alm zu schleppen. Die Aufnahme – irgendwo auf einem Berg im Salzkammergut – ist sicher kein spontaner „Schnappschuss“, die Plattenkamera musste mit der lichtempfindlichen Glasplatte bestückt werden, der Balgen ausgeklappt, entweder unter einem Tuch fokussiert werden (Bild auf der Mattscheibe um 180 Grad gedreht) oder mit einem kleinen Sucherprisma an der Kamera eingerichtet werden. Trotzdem ermöglicht dieses Bild einen Blick auf Wesentliches, es zeigt eine Frau, die direkt in die Kamera blickt, mit Arbeitswerkzeug, Arbeitskleidung – in ihrem Arbeitsumfeld.
Das Foto rechts oben habe ich 2011 in der Operngasse in Wien aufgenommen und ist Teil einer umfangreichen Serie: Eine Bergsteigerin aus Tschechien, die sich vom Dach Stück um Stück abseilt, um die Fassade eines Bankgebäudes zu reinigen. Ich habe sie gefragt, ob ich sie fotografieren darf – aber natürlich nicht, ob ich das Foto auf FB veröffentlichen darf. Das Foto rechts unten stammt aus dem Kunsthistorischen Museum in Wien (2001), ein Einzelfoto, schnell, hastig und unbemerkt aufgenommen.
Fotos von Menschen bei der Arbeit sind ein wichtiges Thema der Fotografie – meiner Ansicht nach aber ein Randthema das zuwenig Beachtung findet. Der Bogen spannt sich von Fotos, die im Auftrag des Unternehmens, eines Betriebes gemacht werden, über gut ausgeleuchtete „Arbeitsreportagen“ (die meist ein geschöntes Bild zeigen), über Fotos, die mit versteckter Kamera von den Arbeitenden selbst aufgenommen werden – bis zu den Überwachungskameras heutiger Tage. Ohne Zweifel eine herausragende Arbeit ist von Sebastião Salgado : Workers : An Archaeology of the Industrial Age

The amateur photographer Johann Promberger, it seems, composed this recording very well around 1920. He should not have used a tripod, as indicated by the slight blur, it was probably too difficult to drag it to the pasture. The recording – somewhere on a mountain in the Salzkammergut – is certainly no spontaneous “snapshot”, the plate camera had to be equipped with the photosensitive glass plate, the bellows unfolded, either focused under a cloth (picture on the screen rotated 180 degrees) or with a small viewfinder prism to be set up on the camera. Nevertheless, this image allows a look at the essentials, it shows a woman who looks directly into the camera, with work tools, work clothes – in their work environment. I took the photo above right in 2011 in the Operngasse in Vienna and is part of an extensive series: A mountaineer from the Czech Republic, who abseils piece by piece from the roof to clean the facade of a bank building. I asked her if I could take a picture of her – but of course not, if I can publish the picture on FB. The photo on the lower right comes from the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna (2001), a single photo taken quickly, hastily and unnoticed. Photos of people at work are an important topic in photography – but in my opinion, a marginal issue that receives too little attention. The spread spans from photographs made on behalf of the company, to well-lit “work reports” (which usually show a glossy picture), to photos taken with a hidden camera by the workers themselves – right up to the Surveillance cameras today. Undoubtedly an outstanding work is Sebastião Salgado: Workers: An Archeology of the Industrial Age
