If I’m not out with the girls having dinner and drinks of an evening, you’ll find me at my computer trawling my favourite internet clothes shops for skinny jeans and figure-hugging dresses.
I’m really into the fashion websites ASOS and Missguided at the moment because they offer up-to-the-minute fashion at great prices. But nothing replaces a trip to the high street, where I mix New Look and River Island with more expensive pieces from Selfridges.
And why not? I might be 56 but I feel 20. I’m a slim 10/12 and while I’d never wear something that wouldn’t suit me or was too young, I’d never shy away from high fashion. I still wear little denim shorts, leggings with heels and fitted T-shirts.
I’ve always been into fashion but now I’m single I dress completely for myself and no one else. When I was with my last partner or before that, my husband of 10 years, I might have been led by what they thought. These days, if I see something I love, I have it and wear it with pride. And my money’s my own. If I want to buy three pairs of shoes, I will!
Age is just a number; you’re as old as you feel. I don’t do any exercise but I eat low-fat during the week. The weekends are about letting go and I do that by going to a bar with friends and then maybe on to a club. I’m going to Spain with a group of girlfriends soon and I’m sure that will involve plenty of nights out.
It’s easy to assume that at 50-odd you should be sitting with a cocoa in your twinset and pearls but that’s not me. I’m single, carefree and having more fun than ever and nothing – particularly a man – is going to stop that!
Tracy Coleman, 55, lives in South London. She’s been single for seven years after an 18-year relationship. She has no children and is a Pilates instructor.
My mum says you get better looking with age because you know what suits you. I think that’s true. I dress much sexier now than I ever used to and I’m not afraid to wear tight things that cling to my curves because these days I’m truly happy in my own skin.
When you’re with a man, even if you really like an item of clothing, if you know he doesn’t like it, you won’t wear it. You won’t feel right in it. I have no-one to please but me so I wear whatever, whenever.
I’m a bit of a rock chick. I love leggings and biker jackets, short skirts with boots. If people think I shouldn’t wear that sort of thing because I’m too old, too bad. I love slinky dresses from the website Bettie Page and I adore All Saints, which is a very “young person’s” shop.
No one ever believes how old I am. I exercise, eat well and don’t drink or smoke. And more so now than ever, I grab life by the scruff of its neck and live it. If you’re happy, that shines through and makes you appear more youthful. When you’re 25, 55 seems ancient. If I’d have known then what I’d be doing now, I’d never have believed it.
Three years ago, I met up with some old friends and we decided to reform our band of three decades ago, Plum Busby. I was a bit nervous getting back up on stage to sing lead vocals but now I love it. It’s so exhilarating.
What holds you back from wearing or doing what you want is not your age, it’s you. You have to get on with it and not care what others think. I agree with my dad who, at 82, often remarks, “I dread getting old”. I intend to continue wearing the kind of things I wear, singing in a band and generally behaving like a 25-year-old for many more years to come!
Dee Froom, 55, lives in Tadley, Basingstoke. The mum of one 34-year-old son divorced five years ago after a 27-year marriage. Dee, who used to work in adult education, currently does promotional work.
While I’ve always tried to look youthful, now I’m on my own and don’t have to listen to anyone’s opinions on what I’m wearing, I probably dress younger than ever. I love wearing things that are a bit flirty and foxy – things that make chaps go ‘phwoar’– it’s such a confidence boost. I definitely dress sexier than ever now.
My former husband is a farmer and we didn’t used to go out much. That’s not to say I wore sensible skirts and flat shoes but I was probably more conservative. I once wore some uber-trendy ripped jeans and he told me I looked scruffy. I never felt the same about them again. These days I love getting dressed up in dresses and heels to go to a party with friends. And I adore skinny jeans and heeled boots. Even he admits I look better than ever.
I follow simple rules to make sure I don’t look tarty. I can wear short OR low-cut, not both. I love fitted clothes and because I eat sensibly, ride my horse, walk my dog and do Pilates, I can get away with them. I buy the odd designer piece like my new Edina Ronay coat from TK Maxx and wear it with something like a top from Primark and lovely jewellery. I always wear make-up and make sure my hair’s just so.
I’ve had great fun internet dating and love men’s reactions when I tell them how old I am. They never believe it and I think that’s down to my clothes. I don’t think I’ve ever dressed as provocatively but I feel confident as it’s just for my own benefit.
Age has given me confidence to do stuff like go to the pub on my own, I’d never have dared when I was younger. I’m always reinventing myself and trying new things. I’ve even gone back to uni too!"
