TAMPA, Fla. - A new sex education curriculum is getting some pushback from Hillsborough County parents. A petition with thousands of signatures opposing the curriculum prompted a school district special hearing.
The new curriculum that was approved back in September drew in dozens of parents and activists for the special hearing. More than 40 speakers spent hours Thursday voicing their objections.
"The curriculum is morally reprehensible and unnecessarily graphic," said one speaker at the hearing.
There have been concerns about instruction on everything from contraception to gender identity.
The district said the curriculum meets state standards, and the sex education lessons cover 7th, 8th and 9th grades. They said the curriculum does emphasize abstinence to prevent pregnancy and disease, and it was reviewed by community members and attorneys.
Parents and community members on both sides of a debate about sex education in Hillsborough County Schools will have the chance to be heard during a meeting Thursday.
The hearing was in front of an impartial hearing-master who will make recommendations based on what was heard at the meeting. Once a recommendation is given to the school board, they could vote to alter the lesson plans or keep them the way they are.
Parents do have an opt-out option within the district, but another concern some parents had was that the form is too vague about reasons they might want to kep their kids out of the classes.
The district's attorney also spoke at the hearing, pushing back against many accusations made by parents.
"So 91% of the students who took the test, felt it was age appropriate for them? That’s correct," attorney Jeff Gibson said.
The recommendations are expected to be ready in about two to three weeks. Once the material is given to the school board, they should take a vote at the next available hearing, likely in mid-December before Winter Break.

A former foster parent in Florida convicted of recording and sexually abusing the children in his care was sentenced to 170 years in prison on Thursday.
The Department of Justice said 48-year-old Justin Dwayne Johnson Sr., of Sanford, Fla., was sentenced to federal prison on four counts of production of child sexual abuse material, one count of production and attempted production of child sexual abuse material, and one count of possession of child sex abuse material.
Child Protection Services began an investigation into Johnson in January 2022 after he allegedly told an acquaintance he was secretly recording his foster children "in the nude."
He also reportedly said he had videos of him "touching the children," according to the DOJ.

Johnson took care of over 20 children in the past three years, Fox 35 Orlando reported.
When detectives looked through Johnson's phone, they said there were several images and videos of child sex abuse material.
Eighteen children were identified as victims sexually exploited by Johnson. According to reports by Law & Crime, the victims ranged in age from infancy to 16 years old.

"Instead of offering a haven for foster children, this predator betrayed the children with a home of horrific abuse," said FBI Tampa Special Agent in Charge David Walker, according to Fox 35. "The FBI’s Child Exploitation Task Force is committed to identifying, locating, and recovering the innocent victims of sexual abuse and ensuring their abusers are brought to justice."
Johnson also reportedly took pictures up women's skirts in numerous locations over the years.
Sanford police Chief Cecil Smith posted the following statement on Facebook after the sentencing was announced:
"Johnson’s crimes are particularly disturbing, in that he was in a position that is expected to provide protection and care to already vulnerable children, and he exploited that role and further victimized these young children. I hope his sentence brings some comfort to those who he has abused."
The case was investigation by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Sanford police and the Seminole County Sheriff's Office.

MANCHESTER, England - A top plastic surgeon to the wealthy admitted having sex with patients who went to him for breast surgeries, a medical tribunal heard in the United Kingdom .
Dr. Olivier Branford, 49, allegedly encouraged "emotional attachment" with patients, showered them with compliments, sent them sexually explicit messages and images, which included nude photographs of himself, and shared details of his sexual fantasies.
The married father of three had sex with one woman at The Cadogan Clinic, in Chelsea, London, after telling her that he wanted to make her his "muse."
He had sex with another patient at the clinic after seeing photos of the "perfect" new breasts he had given her.
Branford had another sexual encounter with a third patient at the clinic while she was still recovering from breast enlargement surgery and it was not "clinically advisable."

Branford admitted to all but four of the 18 charges against him when he appeared before the U.K.’s Medical Practitioners' Tribunal Service.
Ian Brook, prosecuting for the General Medical Council (GMC), said one patient, a fashion model referred to as Patient A, contacted him about having a breast reduction due to her back and shoulder pain and self-esteem issues.
She told Branford she suffered from body dysmorphia , depression and anxiety and "hated the way she looked."
He responded by saying he could "fix her and make her love her body."
Over time, the messages became more flirtatious, Brook said, with Branford telling the woman that he "loved her body" and that "he wanted her to become his muse" so he could paint her.
Other messages described sexual fantasies which included them "French kissing" and touching and stroking each other.
Branford admitted to having "pangs of guilt" about his feelings towards her because he did not want to hurt his children and begged her to become his "secret lover" so he would not feel guilty.

They had sex twice during a consultation in August 2019 and again the next month after he first used oil to massage her breasts.
The tribunal heard about a second patient, a married woman referred to as Patient B, who wanted a breast reduction , which Branford carried out in July 2019.
When he saw photos of the results, Branford said her breasts were "perfect" and those of a "20-year-old."
Branford sent the woman sexually-explicit messages, telling her, "I am French so sensuality is good. You are very desirable and sexy."
The woman told him she was "very inexperienced" and had only had three lovers, but he promised to be "careful and gentle" with her.
They had sex at his clinic in October 2019, but her feelings towards him then changed because it was no longer "special between them." She reported him to the clinic and the GMC.
Branford had sex with a third patient, a model known as Patient C, after she had undergone a breast enlargement operation in February 2020.
He flirted with her during an initial consultation and gave her his phone number, and liked her Instagram photos - one showing her in the back of a taxi wearing lingerie and thigh-high boots - and described her as "elegant."

Feelings between them became "mutual," the tribunal heard, and Branford told her to come for a "full body consultation" and sent her messages about what fantasies they would act out when they met.
Branford advised her to book a "false" appointment and have a shot of cognac beforehand for her anxiety. They had sex in "multiple positions" when she arrived at clinic, despite him knowing it was not "clinically advisable" for a patient to do so for at least two weeks following breast surgery.
The prosecutor said it was the GMC’s contention that Branford "encouraged" the women to become attached to him, but the attachment was "all one way".
The surgeon admitted to fostering an improper emotional relationship with Patients A and B - but not C - and that actions with all three were sexually motivated.
Branford denies knowing the women were vulnerable due to Patient A's body dysmorphia, Patient B's low self-esteem and Patient C's anxiety.
Branford, who is currently suspended, could be struck off the medical register if his fitness to practice is found impaired.
The tribunal will make a decision on the charges Branford has not admitted guilt for next Monday.
