Writing a dream sequence is an unreal task — literally. By their very nature, dreams are unclear, vague, and random. Really random. Have you ever had a dream where everything made NO SENSE, and yet, made TOTAL sense in its own sort of dream logic? Yea, me too. So, the question is:
While dream journals do serve a purpose, professional writers don’t necessarily have the page count to describe a dream in totality. But that doesn’t mean there aren’t some simple guidelines to follow to write a dream that delivers impact.
So, before we learn how to format a screenplay dream sequence — dream sequences in a novel are rendered in traditional prose, so no problem there — let’s talk about what a dream sequence really is . Then we’ll explore some examples and formatting rules.
Dreams convey hidden conflict, backstory, or the future
Dreams have a real-time impact on the story
Dreams should be short, succinct, and intentionally vague
Formatting a dream sequence should be kept simple
When planning your story, you may get the feeling that a dream sequence will be effective in conveying something . That special something is totally up to you, and we’ve all seen dream scenes used in films and TV shows to varying degrees of success. At their worst, we’ve also witnessed the terrible cliche of “It was all a dream and nothing really happened!” Wow! For example, take this scene from Twilight: Breaking Dawn part 2 …
No — don’t do that . A dream sequence should always have bearing on the story, reveal critical new information to the reader, and centre on character. This is simple yet often overlooked. So ask yourself:
It doesn’t need to be huge; it can be a small but powerful realisation. Perhaps it’s as simple as a character realising that running away has been detrimental to his/her life. Or a character remembering a traumatic moment from their past — a clue that can influence the future.
Stories are about change, and dreams are a powerful way for your character to sort out and navigate their conflicting emotions, memories, and thoughts about what they are going through. Remember: dream sequences should be seen as another catalyst to transform your character into a new and improved form.
When you know WHY you have a dream sequence — hint: the realisation — you need to know the HOW you’ll execute it. Another way to breakdown a dream sequence is to decide its inherent categorization:
My character’s inner conflict: Psychologists, dream interpreters and the study of oneirology often describe dreams as a subconscious expression or yearning. They show us our wants, needs, fears, and possible imagined futures. But at its core, dreams are about inner conflict.
So what is your character’s main conflict?
Does he/she find it impossible to love, walk away, fight back, or say goodbye?
Does he/she have trust issues that go beyond relationships?
Does he/she find it difficult to commit because they believe love is a lie?
Try to tap into this feeling in your dream sequence simply and effectively. It may take time, but you’re more likely to create a dream sequence with impact if you know what that conflict is from the start. Once you combine it with your realisation…BOOM!
Backstory: Another structure to a dream is to convey important backstory elements that have bearing on your character, and why they can’t do something in the present . For example, perhaps your character has a traumatic memory of seeing someone die in a car crash. Clearly, such a terrible event would haunt his/her dreams for years to come, even if they’ve grown up and seemingly forgotten about it. Or maybe your character was rejected love from a parent at an early age, and this formed their perspective on love and loss. This would inherently influence decisions in the present. Figure out what the backstory “scene” is first — traumatic, comforting, joyous, etc — and then find an elegant way to show it without saying too much.
The future: Some dreams hint at possible future events or fates. Whether it’s a dark sci-fi story or a comedy, you can play with the nebulous logic and rules of dreams to show your character imagining future scenarios. Perhaps a man is getting married and having anxiety about the wedding. Why? Explore the outcome of the dream when they wake up, and ensure the future dream increases pressure on the character and their goal. Otherwise, the dream sequence has no purpose.
Pro tip: Be careful about infusing a dream with information that a character would NEVER have attained while awake. It will come off as sloppy. Check in your edits and remove.
If you’re writing a dream sequence, ensure that it has a real impact on the story . I can’t stress this enough. Dream sequences shouldn’t be included just because it sounds cool or it’s an opportunity to throw away the rules of reality. Instead, ensure that the writing of your dream sequence has a tangible and meaningful impact on your characters and the personal story they are going on. Your audience will thank you for it.
If the dream sequence is about a character’s dreams and goals — say getting rich or marrying a childhood sweetheart — how does this influence your character over the years? After they wake up, what do they do? Perhaps your character makes contact with an old friend, an ex-lover, or a bank to jumpstart their idea. It doesn’t have to be HUGE. Just make it logical and simple. In fact, the more wild the dream, followed by the simplest of actions, will often be the best mix. People rarely make HUGE decisions after having a nightmare/memorable dream.
If the dream sequence is about a character’s fears and mistakes, how does this impact your character’s “woke” interactions? Do they retreat more into their own pit of dread? Or is he/she inspired to make a different choice, something they have never tried before? It’s up to you. The dream MUST change something for better or worse.
If the dream sequence is about the future, does this change the way the character sees the present? Do they change their stance on something, pause, or push \ on in whatever they are doing? Dreams about the future are usually the most visceral and otherworldly in nature. But what does your character DO about it?
Don’t go overboard and try to do too much. Dream sequences in scripts or novels should be short, sweet, and precise. Unless you are Christopher Nolan writing Inception 2 , there’s no reason to get bogged down with intersecting dreams, past and present flashbacks, and complicated dynamics. Your audience will be left frustrated and confused. Start from a simple foundation first.
Believe me when I say that simplification is key. By anchoring your dream sequence to a single moment or location, you’re allowing more time to explore the actual content of the dream and your character’s reaction. Infuse this dream scene with one predominant feeling: happiness, fear, dread, anxiety, rejection, love , etc. Now you have a solid and character-driven starting point that will be better than 90% of dream sequences out there.
By attempting to do too much, you’re only creating a diminishing effect and potential for confusion. In screenplays, there’s also a consideration for length. I’d stick to a dream sequence as one scene, and at most, 2-3 pages . At most!
For screenplay prose, dream sequence writing should be kept simple and easy to understand. Here’s an example from a screenplay of mine. The following is a dream sequence of a young boy, Nikola. It also serves as a flashback and backstory element. Notice the slugline.
The scene then ends with Dane being attacked by wild horses and killed — Nikola’s past and a nightmare. As you can see, there’s nothing complicated here. Your intention is to make it as easy as possible for your reader to “get” what you are going for. A simple DREAM SEQUENCE at the end of your slugline should suffice.
Then what about after the dream sequence? For me, adding a simple BACK TO THE PRESENT or PRESENT is more than enough.
Here’s another way of doing it from James Cameron’s dream sequence for Sarah Connor in Terminator 2.
James Cameron decides to omit the sluglines to create a more seamless “drifting in” of the dream. For a moment, the reader is left with an unsettling feeling: Is this real? This is perfectly fine too — just ensure there’s a clear visual marker for when the dream starts and ends, e.g. SARAH’s HEAD DROOPS. SHE CLOSES HER EYES, and, WAKES UP.
Similarly, you can solve most formatting issues of a dream sequence like this:
That’s it! The formatting of your dream sequence should be kept simple, instantly accessible, and uncomplicated . Anything more will distract your reader and drag them out of the story. And have fun with your dream sequences! They’re a unique way to delve into the inner psychology of your characters and inject some much-needed momentum into the rest of your script.
Pro tip: To learn how to write a dream, READ SCRIPTS AND WATCH FILMS. Here are a few dream sequences I love.
This dream sequence of Sarah Connor in Terminator 2 (1991), written and directed by James Cameron, is a great example of a character dreaming of a future event that will have a devastating effect on the world. And most importantly, her damaged psyche. The brutality, fear, and visceral horror of the scene will compel her to act in order for it to NOT come true. In the next scenes, she heads out to hunt Dyson, one of the creators of the Skynet system, and tries to kill him. A nightmare/dream with a powerful aftermath.
Dream sequences can also be hilarious! In Dumb and Dumber (1994), Lloyd fantasises about what he will do when he meets Mary. Not only do the scenes all have a clear and growing sense of ludic madness, but the dreams get more unreal as they go on. Lloyd imagines his “best self”, how he would ideally like to be, and receives applause and approval for it. The climax of the dream ends in a merging of the dream and reality…a truck is headed his way!
Probably one of the best dream sequences ever committed to film, the Dude’s drugged-up dream in The Big Lebowski is perfect in achieving numerous things at once:
The Dude’s subconscious desires: bowling, freedom, Maude Lebowski, porn.
The Dude’s fears: getting his testicles snipped off, Saddam Hussien, war.
The Dude’s logical yet illogical predicament: drug-fuelled randomness.
Along with the inspired song choice Just Dropped In (To See What Condition My Condition Was In) by The First Edition , this dream sequence has to go down in history as not just hilarious, but a deep unpacking of the Dude’s inner wants, fears, conflict and philosophy.
