The Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 35mm f/1.8G ED is a fast lens, ideal for use in low light situations, and rounds out the Nikon line of f/1.8 FX lenses.
Although its title of the fastest 35mm lens for the Nikon F was lost to the Nikkor Auto 35mm f/1.4 released in 1971, it was updated with lens elements to which a multi-layer coating had been applied and released as the Nikkor Auto 35mm f/2 C in 1973. In 1975, the lens was reborn as the new Nikkor Auto 35mm f/2 with a completely new exterior.
The Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 35mm f/1.4G is a fast, wide-angle prime lens that is ideal for astrophotography; allowing for a 63° angle of view with an FX-format camera and a 44° angle of view when used with a DX-format camera.
If you think of "3.5cm f/2.5" lens for Nikon S or M39 screw mount cameras upon hearing the specifications of "35mm f/2.5", you are quite smart. The fact is that "W Nikkor 35mm f/2.5" was designed based on the optical system of "W-Nikkor 3.5cm f/2.5" that was being sold for S/M39.
