Hnutí nudistů vzniklo v Německu na počátku 20. století. První nudistický klub byl založený roku 1903 v Hamburku. Po nástupu Adolfa Hitlera k moci byl nudismus zakázán.
Největší oblibu získal v 80. letech 20. století, kdy se nazí začali ukazovat i obyvatelé tradičně katolických zemí jako Španělsko nebo Itálie.
