However when we addressed with cleaning staff they were lovely and accommodating and cleaned window sills. We arrived at hrs we had anticipated an earlier arrival but due to flight delays we were a few hours later reception open until hrs so we were not concerned however was closed. We called the number on the door and were given a lockbox number, keys retrieved to room but they had not been allocated and we could not access. Thankfully another couple had already called reception and they were en-route so this problem was solved quickly. Also staff advised that we had been inadvertently charged twice and refund was in process however 7 days later no refund for over-charge has been processed. In this article I intend to link the identity appropriation of the azulejo to a source common to most artistic discourse in the nineteenth and twenty-first centuries. I am convinced the national assumptions concerning the azulejo followed six phases which I have linked to different identity mutations that could be summarized as unceasing historicist approaches, which are characterological and long-term. Historicism prevailed until the end of the nineteenth century. A passion for characterological principles followed, which was conveyed by Reynaldo dos Santos with unsurpassable strength. First, traces of Portuguese originality, though ephemeral, were sought after. Second, researchers attempted to show that the azulejo is an expression of Portuguese sensibility which, with its ups and downs, remained throughout the centuries. Third, by inventorying and analy ARTis ON n. The combination of tile with architecture has been used in Portugal for centuries. It achieved a unique level of artistry by the end of the 19th c. The use of new colours and modern stylizations were explored during the Art Nouveau period. The tile was used as a frame for architectural features in order to enhance the building. By then all the elements were intended to be harmoniously combined as a whole. A large span of case studies, ordered chronologically, illustrate the role and evolution of the tiles used during this period when tiles were designed by academic painters or architects. Later, with the reintroduction of the azulejo in the Brazilian modern architecture during the s, its role as a regional mark rooted in a prestigious history was also recognized by the young Portuguese architects who started integrating them in modern constructions in the first half of the s. Porto stands as a Portuguese town where modern azulejos were used not only in a striking number of works but also with great creativity. However, the references in the bibliography are scant, compared to Lisbon. The aim of this paper is to present the use of modern azulejos in Porto, revealing some unknown cases that mark the period in the town. The discussion will be illustrated with an overview of the city's urban expansion in that period. One of the aspects that has supported the idea of the azulejo tile as a cultural heritage of the Portuguese identity is its continuous employment since the end of the fifteenth century until today, now having become a part of the projects of artists, architects and designers. This article seeks to ponder upon the relationship that contemporary authors have established, or not, with this appreciation of the azulejo as an art connected to identity, discerning the reasons that have led them to select it for their pieces.
