What is invitation

Invitation : a request to other other person to join you at a specific event.

The purpose is to invite someone to join the event.

There are two types of invitations: formal and informal.

a. Formal invitation is an invitation which follows a dignified form, tone, or style in agreement with the established norms, customs or values (Websters, 2012)

Example for formal invitation:

-         An invitation to the headmaster for the school birthday celebration

-         An invitation to the graduation ceremony

-         An invitation to a wedding, and etc.

b. Informal invitations is personal invitation given to a friend, family, etc.

For example;

- Invitation to a birthday party

- Invitation to dinner

Structures of formal invitation

Common format of a Formal Invitation:

a. The name(s) of the person who invite(s)

b. The request for participaton

c. The name of the person(s) invited

d. The occasion for invitation

e. Tthe time and date of occasion

f. The place of occasion

g. The request for reply

  • Are you free this evening?
  • Do you want to go to the book fair with me?
  • I would like to invite you to come to our party tonight.
  • Would you like to go to cinema with me this weekend?
  • Would you like to go to the concert?
  • How about going to the movies with me this Saturday?
  • If you have nothing planned for next summer holiday, I'd like to ask you to go to Europe.
  • Please, come to my office whenever you're free.

How to respond someone's invitation.

  • Thank you so much for the invitation.
  • Thank you very much for inviting me.
  • Thank you, it would be a great idea. I'd like to come then.
  • That sounds great.
  • That would be great, thanks.
  • That would be very nice.I
  • That's very kind of you.
  • How kind of you to ask, I'd be delighted.
  • Sure, what did you have in mind?

How to refuse someone's invitation

  • Thank you, it's an honor for me, but I'm sorry, I have to leave this city tomorrow.
  • Sorry, but I've already made other plans.
  • I'm sorry, but I have a previous engagement.
  • I'm sorry, I don't think I can.
  • I'm not sure I can.
