Editor’s Note: This story was originally published in May 2019 and has been updated accordingly.
Cannes has a history of premiering sexually explicit films throughout its history — and with all manner of unsimulated acts — to both shocks and shrugs on the Croisette.
An avant-garde film like Yugoslavian director Dušan Makavejev’s brilliantly sex-crazed bonanza “Sweet Movie” likely didn’t swallow well with American audiences treated to its insanities, from coprophilia to vomit play, but it’s gone on to attract a cult following.
Most recently, “Blue Is the Warmest Colour” director Abdellatif Kechiche effectively made himself persona non grata among U.S. distributors when, in 2019, he released his nearly four-hour-long sequel “Mektoub, My Love: Intermezzo,” a graphic and some felt blatantly misogynist epic of young people having all the sex in the world. The film has never been seen stateside and remains the subject of ongoing legal entanglements due to Kechiche’s treatment of lead actress Ophélie Bau, who claimed he denied her permission to see the film’s most graphic scene prior to the premiere. Kechiche had a slightly warmer reception in 2013, when the simulated but realistic acts in “Blue” helped power it, and leads Adèle Exarchopoulos and Léa Seydoux, all the way to the Palme.
This year’s festival was heavier on horrors of the body (“Crimes of the Future,” “De Humani Corporis Fabrica’) than its pleasures (though Claire Denis’ “Stars at Noon” brought some steam to the Croisette). But Cannes most years, as you’ll see below, has at least a few sex scandals of its own. Below, we look back at the history of unsimulated sex scenes at Cannes — from the arcane to the more arthouse-accessible like Gaspar Noé and Lars von Trier and, of course, Vincent Gallo’s infamous “Brown Bunny” oral sex scene.

When it comes to teen sex in film, Hollywood too often remembers to bring the condom. Whipped cream is about as dangerous as things get, and the offensively fake orgasms from Fifty Shades of Grey can still be heard reverberating through sex ed classrooms the world over. Foreign films about budding sexuality can be risqué while still delivering on narrative.
The two, believe it or not, are perfect bedfellows. So if America is like your dad who sits you down for an awkward birds and the bees talk, countries like Brazil and Sweden will kindly swoop in to give you concrete answers in the form of cinematic sexual awakenings and reversal of gender norms. As French filmmaker Eva Husson’s libido-cranking Bang Gang (A Modern Love Story) heads to UK cinemas next week, we pull the pants down on the foreign films that refuse to skirt the issue.
Unapologetic about teen girls’ burning sexual desires, Norwegian film Turn Me On, Dammit! is a refreshing tell-it-like-it-is story about a sexually starving 15-year-old named Alma. Behind her mum’s back, she rings up sex hotlines to get off. It staves her appetite for a while, but she longs for a physical connection. Alma lusts after Arthur, a cripplingly shy boy who is the perfect cocktail of anxious and virile. However, when the pair do come together, it’s not exactly how she’d intended. She unwittingly tells her friends of the meet and the story gets out, turning her into a shunned vixen. This is maybe the funniest movie about sex after The Little Death.
Long story short – two boys join a track team and discover that they love to run just as much as the next friend of Dorothy (i.e. not very much). Their slavish dedication to the track team ends up being a welcome excuse to wear tight-fitting shorts and, ahem, ‘exercise’ on the regular. Luckily, there’s a pond nearby the track where they can cool off after an intense training session. This film is fairly innocent – its languid romance trumps any intervention of actual sex – but lawd does it fulfill every unticked box of a masc4masc love story.
As the title suggests, horny French teen Alex hosts a sex party while his mum is away on a work trip. Because the participants are all of the Snapchat generation, they decide to film and upload everything to a password-protected site so they can rewatch and distribute at their leisure. They call themselves the “Bang Gang” (pronounced “Bong Gong” because it’s France). Bang Gang is like Bernardo Bertolucci’s The Dreamers sluttier, digital native sister. There is a ‘helicopter’ scene that would put the shock-horror of the surprise penis in the latest Game of Thrones episode to shame. Director Eva Husson manages to make group sex, and all its cautionary absolutes, into a total thrill ride.
If Mr. Magoo had a secret history of gay sex, this film would likely be it. The Way He Looks is an innocent portrait of twink love made by Brazilian director Daniel Ribeiro. Blind teenager Leonardo has every strike against him. He just wants to be independent but his parents like to keep him on a tight leash, meeting his plans to study abroad with only the mildest of support. Even his best friend Giovana is hurt by this decision. It’s only when Gabriel, a new student, shows up and quickly wedges his way in between Leo and his friend Giovana that Leo has an awakening. Leonardo’s inability to see from birth is probably a metaphor for love being blind or whatever, but this tender story of two young gays is criminally endearing.
Last but not least, German film Wetlands will make even the most seasoned dirty girl feel slightly uncomfortable. Oddball ingénue Helen Memel has no qualms about hygiene – the grimier the toilet, the better. So it’s kind of obvious when the 18-year-old is hospitalised for an anal fissure (I told you it wouldn’t be pretty). While in the care of gorgeous male nurse Robin, Helen flashes her come to bed eyes in between narrating sexual takeaways from her life. They involve daring confrontations with vegetables, jizz-covered pizzas and self-dirtying. It’s not for the faint of heart. The plot keywords on IMDb include: pink panties, bleeding and divorced parents, if that offers you any final warning.
Bang Gang (A Modern Love Story) is out in UK cinemas June 2

From Lars von Trier to John Cameron Mitchell and almost every Vincent Gallo movie, here are the films that actually captured real sex scenes.

Sex on film is nothing new, and yet unsimulated intercourse in non-pornographic films has been somewhat of a marvel.
Catherine Breillat ‘s first film in 1976, “A Very Young Girl,” adapts her own controversial novel about a 14-year-old exploring her newfound sexuality. While the lead actress Charlotte Alexandra was age 20 during production, the film wasn’t released in theaters in the U.S. until 2000.
Breillat’s later film, “Romance,” was announced as the first European film with non-simulated sex scenes in 1999, according to Breillat.
“Actors are prostitutes because they’re asked to play other feelings,” Breillat exclusively told IndieWire . “This prostitution is not profane; it’s a sacred act that we give them.”
In contrast, John Cameron Mitchell set out to “honor” sex as a pastime for real people, much like art, music, or cuisine, in his second feature film, “Shortbus,” the 2006 film now rolling out a re-release restoration nationwide.
Mitchell told IndieWire about filming the cult classic, “Certainly, a lot of films had used sex, but they were pretty grim, and I wanted something more fun and funny, but still emotionally deep. And so I said, ‘I never want you to do anything you don’t want to do, but I do want you to challenge yourselves so we can challenge the audience.'”
Mitchell continued, “‘Shortbus’ isn’t about sex. It uses sex as a medium, as a delivery system for ideas and characters and emotions, just like ‘Hedwig [and the Angry Itch]’ uses music. Sex is our music in ‘Shortbus.’ We really only did one sexual rehearsal. I just went with what they wanted to do.”
And the depiction of unsimulated sex onscreen has taken many forms across decades and new political landscapes. “In terms of sex being presented on film, mainstream or even independent film has foresworn it,” Mitchell summarized. “They’ve given it up, because it’s too scary. There’s too many people saying someone’s being exploited and consent-based issues in intimacy. Imagine an intimacy counselor on the ‘Shortbus’ set. Imagine…a ‘Shortbus’ intimacy counselor would be like, ‘May he put his arm inside you now? Is that OK?'”

These actors aren't faking anything.
Here's the thing. People have sex. Movies have sex scenes. Wouldn't it be intriguing if a movie featured two actors having actual, consensual sex, instead of just mimicking sex in a way that looks great onscreen but is almost certainly very, very awkward in real life? Yes, obviously, we're aware that great, consensual, female-friendly porn exists, but we are not talking about porn here. No, we're talking about actual, mainstream (or, at very least, as the level of "mainstream" achieved by arthouse foreign films and indies) movies with actual plots that also happen to feature actual humans engaging in actual sex acts. Don't roll your eyes—these movies exist. And, not only do they exist, but there are, honestly, way more of them out there than you probably realize—and we're just highlighting 75 of our favorites.
You read that correctly: This list contains 75 sex movies that have answered your prayers and made all of your sex-obsessed dreams come true. They all feature plenty of sex, and, unlike most of the sex you see onscreen, the moments of hotness in these movies is all completely, totally, and one hundred percent real . It's intense and kind of hot to see people have sex in a movie and know it's actually real, and that's what you'll get with these movies. As you might expect, a lot of these movies are indies and foreign films—realms where pushing the envelope, especially in the realm of carnal pleasures, is more accepted. But, some of them feature fully mainstream stars and Oscar winners like Al Pacino, Mark Rylance, and even Dame Helen Mirren.
In 2005, this documentary dug, um, well, deep, into the iconic 1972 pornographic film Deep Throat and its cultural impact. In the name of education, it contains 20 seconds of unsimulated fellatio courtesy of the source material, along with interviews a range of people including Linda Lovelace, Gore Vidal, Larry Flynt, Hugh Hefner, and John Waters.
Speaking of documentaries, 1968's They Call Us Misfit , followed two young hippies named Kenta and Stoffe and was notable (opens in new tab) for being the earliest example of non-simulated sex in a "legal" movie in Sweden.
If you like your horror with a healthy side of sex, 1973's Female Vampire is a must-watch. The movie is literally about a woman, (the Countess Irina von Karlstein), who is essentially a sex vampire—as in she needs sex instead of blood to stay alive. The unsimulated sex comes in during the murder scenes, in which the Countess performs oral sex on her victims until they die (as you do). There were three versions of the film—one that's a standard, mainstream horror movie, another that mixes the horror with sex, and a third that's straight up hardcore porn.
Another film with multiple versions is Emmanuelle 5 . The 1987 French film is part of the ongoing Emmanuelle series and exists in three distinct versions—its original theatrical cut, a French home video version with extra hardcore sex scenes, and a US version that includes new scenes that were filmed in a more comedic style.
In the movie, Emmanuelle is a filmmaker who debuts a scandalous, erotic film at Cannes. The original release of Emmanuelle 5 was met with some controversy due to speculation that director Walerian Borowczyk actually only directed the sexy film-within-a-film.
This 1969 movie was one of the first examples of the "women in prison" genre and there are reportedly four versions of it in existence, including Jesús Franco's director's cut and a French hardcore version released in 1974 that includes more than eight minutes of new, hardcore footage filmed by Claude Sendron.
Starlet , released in 2012, is an indie drama set in the porn capital—the San Fernando Valley in Southern California. It's not surprising, then, that the movie includes some unsimulated sex.
This drama, also known by the title I Am a Groupie! , about groupie life in the rock music scene, was written by director Derek Ford and real-life former groupie Suzanne Mercer. The movie was originally released in 1970, but was re-released in 1974 with additional, hardcore scenes added in.
Released as Diversions in the US, Derek Ford's 1976 Sex Express focuses on a woman who loses herself in a series of sexual fantasies while on a train ride. There's a hardcore export version and the German version of the film reportedly (opens in new tab) includes a golden shower sequence.
This movie is not readily available to stream online.
Produced by and starring Fionnula Flanagan and based on her 1977 play of the same name, James Joyce's Women includes about 20 minutes of footage of Flanagan masturbating on camera.
This 2013 Norwegian movie about a guy who moves to Oslo for school and finds himself a student of his two new pickup artist roommates, includes a scene of unsimulated fellatio.
Think Downtown Abbey , but make it sexy/funny. This 1976 British sex comedy (also known as My Favorite Butler ) follows the sexual adventures of the inhabitants of Cockshute Castle . A hardcore version featuring inserts filmed with body doubles also exists.
This trippy Italian film is best described as "erotic horror." The original version was softcore, but a hardcore version (filmed using a body double for lead actress Rita Calderoni) also exists.
British sex comedy Keep It Up, Jack is about a struggling drag artist who inherits a brothel from his dead aunt (yep and stay with us, because the plot only continues down the path of WTF-ery), and then proceeds to impersonate her (that would be the dead aunt) in an effort to seduce the female clients of said brothel. A version of the film (opens in new tab) including explicit sex scenes was also released, but the hardcore scenes don't feature the credited cast.
This movie is not readily available to stream online.
This Jesús Franco film focuses on three women who share an apartment and occasionally freelance as sex workers to pay the rent. The Blu-ray release includes both the softcore and hardcore versions of the movie.
This German dark comedy delves into the differences between the private and public lives of a teacher in Berlin and features hardcore gay sex scenes.
This 2016 Danish film by Alexander Bak Sagmo features non-simulated sex acts. The movie itself is dark—about a 23-year-old man, who, convinced he's evil, shows up at his university with a gun and a plan to shoot his fellow students.
This movie, by director Walerian Borowczyk, actually includes three stories— titled Margherita , Marceline , and Marie , respectively. The first, Margherita , includes an unsimulated intercourse scene.
The Danish DVD version of this 1977 film by Giuseppe Vari includes hardcore sex scenes.
While the characters do watch some hardcore sex on a vintage film reel at one point, 1985's The Alcove is mostly a softcore film. Still, the Joe D'Amato-helmed movie contains some unsimulated scenes.
This 1982 Brazilian film from director David Neves tells the story of controversial Brazilian vedette Luz del Fuego—and includes a scene with the main actress rubbing up against an actual penis.
This 2011 experimental film by musician Adam Green features a costarring performance by Macaulay Culkin and, maybe even more notably, an unsimulated scene of Green being anally penetrated by a dildo.
Also known as Garçon stupide, this 2004 French film by Lionel Baier contains "strong" real sex.
This movie is not readily available to stream online.
This is a sexploitation film, so it's not shocking that there's some real sex involved. The 1980 film (which was released in Brazil as A Prisão ), is set in a w
