Ford Urges Tougher Tariffs on Chinese EVs

Ford Calls for Tariffs on Chinese-Made EVs to Protect U.S. Auto Industry

Detroit, May 8, 2025 – Ford Motor Company is urging the Biden administration to maintain or even increase tariffs on Chinese-made electric vehicles (EVs) to protect American automakers from what it calls 'unfair competition.' The plea comes as Chinese EV manufacturers, backed by heavy state subsidies, continue to expand globally, threatening domestic production and jobs.

Ford’s Stance on Tariffs

In a statement released Wednesday, Ford CEO Jim Farley argued that Chinese automakers benefit from significant government support, allowing them to sell EVs at artificially low prices. 'If we don’t take action now, the U.S. auto industry—and the jobs it supports—could be at serious risk,' Farley said.

The Biden administration has already imposed a 25% tariff on Chinese EVs under Section 301 of the Trade Act of 1974, citing unfair trade practices. However, Ford and other U.S. automakers are pushing for even stricter measures, including potential restrictions on Chinese EV components like batteries and semiconductors.

China’s Growing EV Dominance

Chinese automakers, such as BYD and NIO, have rapidly gained market share in Europe and Southeast Asia, offering high-tech EVs at competitive prices. Industry analysts warn that without tariffs, Chinese brands could flood the U.S. market, undercutting Ford, General Motors, and Tesla.

'China’s overcapacity in EV production is a real concern,' said Michelle Krebs, an analyst at Cox Automotive. 'If those vehicles enter the U.S. at dumped prices, it could destabilize the market.'

Political and Economic Implications

The debate over tariffs has become a key issue in the 2024 presidential election, with both Democrats and Republicans advocating for tougher trade policies against China. Former President Donald Trump, who initially imposed tariffs on Chinese goods during his term, has pledged even higher levies if re-elected.

Meanwhile, the White House is weighing its options. 'We are committed to protecting American workers and ensuring a level playing field,' said U.S. Trade Representative Katherine Tai in a recent briefing.
