The Ford Escort RS Cosworth has a lot of admirable features; let's check them out.
The Ford Escort RS Cosworth is a rally version of the Mark V European Ford Escort. It was built on the chassis and mechanicals of the Sierra Cosworth, clothed to look like the Escort, yet, the body part of the RS Cosworth and the Escort Cosworth cannot be interchanged except the front doors and roof.
The Ford Escort RS Cosworth was a three-door whale-tailed machine built in the name of homologation . It was designed as a race version of the Ford Escort Cosworth for the World Rally Championship, and it competed in the Championship between 1993 and 1998.
To be worthy of its purpose, the RS Cosworth got a new engine management system, a new turbocharger, and has a permanent four-wheel drive, unlike the Escort Cosworth, which is an RWD, although a permanent all-wheel drive of the Ford Escort Cosworth was later produced, yet, it was still a far cry from the RS Cosworth.
The most admirable component of the RS Cosworth was its engine. The Cosworth YBT was an easy to tune turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-four engine with an output of 227 PS (167kW; 224 bhp).
Just like most of the automobile heavyweights such as Mercedes-Benz and BMW, the Ford Escort RS Cosworth was made in Germany by Karmann, and it is certainly noticeable.
Better still, it was designed by the legendary Frank Stephenson, who was a big wig in the art of car design for decades.
The whale tail on the RS Cosworth was motivated by the aerodynamics of rally cars , but on the ones built for road users; it is more or less for the paparazzi, but who cares? We love our RS Cosworth tailed up.
Between 1993 and 1997, the Ford Escort RS Cosworth won a total of ten World Car Rally titles , including the Rallye de Portugal, Monte Carlo Rally, and the 1,000 Lakes Rally, and was the overall winner in the W2L series (Monte Carlo Rally) in 1996. Besides the World Championship, the Cosworth was a serial winner at national and European levels with over thirty titles between 1993 and 1998.
This is besides all the titles and trophies that the Escort RS Cosworth has won on tracks and in races. Even if the car can’t speak of how awesome it is, the car's records are doing the talking.
If cars were to be animals, the Ford Escort RS Cosworth shouldn’t be that far from the top of the list of endangered species. With just a pinch above 7,000 ever built and a lot of it wrecked by untrained hands, the RS Cosworth is not that easy to find, especially now.
Only a few of this delight on wheels has ever made it to North America – through a third party unofficially as the car is for the European market. This has further fueled the huge appetite collector for it in the US. If you ever come across a car that looks like the Ford Escort RS Cosworth, there's good odds that what you saw is the Sierra Sapphire or the regular Escort.
We may forgive you if you decided not to tick the sophisticated and stylishly built box for the RS Cosworth, we could overlook that. What you may not be forgiven for is to look down on the engine’s capabilities. The 2.0-liter YB Cosworth engine with a Ferguson five-speed, four-wheel-drive power train with a 34/66 front/rear split, generates 227 hp with a healthy 229 ft-lb torque; it cannot be considered anything less than solid.
Turning companies have been able to tune this almost indestructible engine to generate over 1,000 hp. A regular gearhead can, without much stress, tune the engine to generate 500 hp.
The Ford Escort RS Cosworth got the Garett T35 turbo used on the RS200, recycled, and stuck in the YB Unit. The turbo sometimes gets untrained hands unaware due to its reputable turbo-lag, which affects the drivability. This doesn’t take away from the massive turbo, which was one of the high points of the car.
The tough get going when the going gets tough; Ford was well aware that something tough was under the hood of the RS Cosworth, so they cleverly installed a cooling water injection system on all the production cars so that they won’t have to worry about their engine if their driver got an adrenaline rush while taking the car for a spin on the track or, of course, if they go racing. A regular driver with the RS Cosworth may not know the worth of the cleverly placed cooling system until the engine is modified.
Without tuning the engine, the car can reach 0 – 62 mph in 5.7 seconds. Doesn’t sound spectacular to you, right? Well, this was in 1993, almost two decades ago, and heavyweights such as Benz and BMW and even sports freaks like Ferrari are having a hard time clocking this kind of time and its speed also rival that of cars like BMW M3, Nissan 300ZX, and Toyota Supra that were known for speed back then.
The Ford Escort RS Cosworth didn’t only earn its reputation on the tracks, but it gained some on the street as well, thanks to untrained hands trying to tame the huge turbo, especially on the T35 engine.
At a point, the Escort RS Cosworth became almost impossible to insure as an untrained driver who couldn’t handle the four-wheel drive, and the turbo lag could get caught out and, more than often, ended their ride in a ditch. The T25 engine, however, was much easier to handle. We love the Escape RS Cosworth for its ability to put the fear of God in insurance companies. That’s a reputation to ride for.
