I was really excited for this book, because I liked the blog. I thought that the book would go more deeply into the science/neuroscience of things, or at least provide new content. I was very wrong! Don't waste the money on the book--almost everything is copied from summertomato.com word for word. The content in the book might be useful to someone that is an absolute beginner to cooking and healthy eating. However, I honestly think there are better books out there to teach you those things. Darya's "angle" is her training as a scientist, but in the book (and on her site these days) that is not obvious at all. In addition, the book is rather poorly written, not to mention condescending and just generally irritating in its voice. Most of the material is common sense, and I came away from the book wondering if I had learned anything at all (note: I can't think of anything). I'm far from a nutritionist (though I am a scientist), so I was surprised that an entire book could be written out of fluff/common sense. Overall, I don't recommend unless you know nothing about cooking/feeding yourself. Even then, read her website for free and save the money.

I think this author is very well-intentioned, and truly does want to help people become healthier. But I was so disappointed with this book. Essentially, it encourages people to develop a form of orthorexia (a rigid obsession with only eating foods that are designated as pure, and rigorously avoiding other foods that are designated as poison). The book also encourages people to use a number of tricks, such as chewing food many, many times, smaller plates, drinking water, etc. I’ve been there and done that kind of thing so many times before. I just don’t want my life to revolve around any type of food-obsessive thinking any more. After I read this I kept looking for some other alternative. Personally, I’ve found the book “The Joy of Half a Cookie” to be a more peaceful approach that better suits me. So while I do follow this author’s blog, which often has great links, I just can’t recommend this book overall. It is possible that there are some people who might benefit from some of the information in it, but I don't think it's a mentally healthy approach (at least not for me). Anyway, good luck to you in finding an approach that works and is healthy for you!

The Joy of Half a Cookie: Using Mindfulness to Lose Weight and End the Struggle with Food

The whole premise of this book is that if you want to eat healthy and stay slim then all you need to do is be a "foodist". The problem is that she never defines what she means by foodist. Is it someone who is just really interested in food, someone who is interested in healthy food, a gourmet or someone who jumps on the latest food craze like avocado toast? You could definitely be what many would describe as a foodist and not be eating healthy food and not be slim. Another thing she says is that if didn't like vegetables as a kid then you can just teach yourself to love them especially if you buy them from a farmers market. If it was only that simple. I'm lucky because I never grew up hating vegetables, but some people just really don't like the taste of certain vegetables and they are likely to have an even stronger flavor from the farmers market. She also has a recipe called "How to Make Brussels Sprouts That Aren't Gross". I take exception to the assumption in that title. I have always liked Brussels and never thought they were gross. But I can guarantee that there are people that would never eat them no matter what. The fact is some people can't afford to buy good food or don't have access to good food. I think the author comes across as elitist who doesn't have real solutions to offer.

This is a wonderful book for anyone trying to lose weight, wanting to improve their health, or just interested in learning more about the science of nutrition. It is easy to understand and provides valuable, actionable tips that are applicable to everyone. That is not to say the author believes losing weight or maintaining a healthy lifestyle is easy - most of us know from experience it is not - but Dr. Rose breaks the science of nutrition into digestible bites that are easy to understand and remember without oversimplifing. She shows you how to turn guilty diet cheats into selective indulgences and failures into learning opportunities. No matter where you are on your quest to be healthy, look good, and feel well, Foodist will help you identify your "bright spots" to celebrate as well as your challenges to address and will guide you along the path to your own personal healthstyle.

This is perhaps the best book I've ever read dealing with living a healthy lifestyle, and I don't say that lightly. I have an academic background in public health, and the advice in this book is not only scientifically sound and easily readable, but profoundly useful to anyone who wants to make healthy changes. I like that Dr. Rose talks about "upgrading your healthstyle" instead of focusing on what you can or can't eat. There are no off-limit foods, no weird fasting requirements, no exercises you must do. It's simply about eating cleanly, moving more, and being more mindful about your habits. She uses anecdotes as well as interesting cutting-edge scientific research, and it is all extremely well-written and readable (not to mention very funny, especially some of the asterisks!) I've lost a not insignificant amount of weight through adopting the healthy habits she talks about, and I considered myself a fairly active and healthy individual before reading this book. Her advice on mindful eating and focusing on tasty foods over junk particularly helped me. The best part is, I never, ever feel like I'm depriving myself of anything. Dr. Rose's book has helped me shift the way I think about eating and exercise. It's really a whole new mindset, and the best part is, anyone can do it. Stop dieting and read this book! Not only will you lose weight, but you will be more energetic and enjoy eating more. Really.

Advice on food, diet and living without the hype. Priceless.

This is the best, most down to earth book I have ever come across that deals with the perennial problems of loosing weight, maintaining the loss and healthy living. It strips away the hype behind dieting and explains why normal diets don't work then suggests a way to live and eat well without fear of slipping back into old bad habits. This book is a must for anyone who has been plagued by the "diet, loose weight, pile it back on, diet, loose weight pile it back on, diet..." cycle. Oh, and did I mention that you can still eat and enjoy good food and wine?

a great building block for a healthier lifestyle

I got this book in February, since then I have lost a over a stone, I feel great and I can run 5k without having a heart attack. I must admit I was only slightly over weight but this book reinvigorated my passion for good food, something I lost after those quick and easy meals at university. Darya's book has lots of great tips that achieve results surprisingly quickly and aims to inform you so you can make the right decisions about your food health. I would recommend this book to anyone who is trying to loose weight or is interested in knowing a bit more about what they eat. I would rate it five stars, but this book is certainly aimed at American readers so some of the recipes and cultural difference (such as names of food) are not always applicable to ourselves. But don't let that stop you from reading this. Thanks Darya, you have a lifelong fan.

Same old same old

This isn't a diet it's a lifestyle change .... yep just like all the other diets. As a diet it's a good one but if you've looked at the whole 30 this is a dumbed down version. Would be good for someone who is new to weight management.

Amazing read!! helps change your perspective on food! and life in general. a must read!

In Foodist , Darya Pino Rose, a neuroscientist, food writer, and the creator of SummerTomato.com, delivers a savvy, practical guide to ending the diet cycle and discovering lasting weight-loss through the love of food and the fundamentals of science.
A foodist simply has a different way of looking at food, and makes decisions with a clear understanding of how to optimize health and happiness. Foodist is a new approach to healthy eating that focuses on what you like to eat, rather than what you should or shouldn’t eat, while teaching you how to make good decisions, backed up by an understanding of what it means to live a healthy lifestyle.
Foodist: Using Real Food and Real Science to Lose Weight Without Dieting is filled with tips on food shopping, food prep, cooking, and how to pick the right restaurants and make smart menu choices.
“Darya is my favorite kind of scientist--she finds the simple in the complex, the beauty in the chaos. If anyone will make you love (and rediscover) food, it’s her.” — Tim Ferriss
“In Foodist, Darya Pino gives the most sensible advice I’ve read about attaining and maintaining healthy weight without dieting. Her science-based approach tells you how to enjoy real food, make the best food choices, and not deny yourself the pleasures of eating. I recommend this book.” — Andrew Weil, M.D.
Foodist is a manifesto about real food and real science that proves once and for all that sustainable weight loss is possible by incorporating fresh, seasonal—and delicious—ingredients into every meal.
If you picked up this book, there's a good chance this is not the first time you hoped a new eating plan would help you lose weight. Dieting is a popular hobby in the twenty-first century, and the result is typically a slow but steady weight gain over the years. Oops. Diets fail because they rely on willpower and restriction for achieving health goals, and ignore the reasons these tactics always backfire. Becoming a foodist helps you give up dieting forever and get on the real path to healthy, lasting weight control.
Foodist is an approach that actually celebrates food while taking you through the nutrition and psychology involved in eating well to help you move beyond the daily obstacles and bad habits that keep the tasteless, empty, and unsatisfying food-like products on your plate. Losing weight no longer has to be about sacrifice, deprivation, and willpower, and food will turn from something you fight into something you can actually love again. As Darya writes, "You don't need a diet. You need an upgrade."
Smart, accessible, and engaging, Foodist will help you tailor your eating habits to match your lifestyle and your food preferences, making sure the path you choose works for you in the short- and long-term. Not only will you permanently build healthier habits into your daily life, you'll lose weight and enjoy food like never before.

I was born and raised on the sunny beaches of southern California. Before becoming a foodist I tried and succeeded at every weight loss plan under the sun. Now I hover about 5-8 pounds below my original goal weight without much effort and am in better shape than I was at 20, which is totally awesome.
In 2010, I completed my Ph.D in neuroscience at UC San Francisco. About a year before graduating I started writing about food and health at my website, Summer Tomato. By the time I defended my thesis, I had a new career.
