Answer Key and Interesting Information From This Quiz

Joints .

There are thirty-three joints in the human foot. The foot is made up of an intricate work of bones, tendons, muscles and ligaments that gives the foot the ability to move, support weight, walk, run and many other activities.

Hallux .

The big toe is really called the hallux. It is sometimes referred to as the great toe and even as the thumb toe. It is the largest toe on the foot and is counted as digit #1 on the foot. Many people can suffer from hallux valgus, which is more commonly known as bunions. It is an abnormal amount of bone or tissue around the joint at the base of the big toe.
The talus is the lower part of the ankle joint, the calcaneus is the heel bone, and the navicular bone is a boat shaped bone in the foot.

Forefoot .

The forefoot is made up of the five toes and their connecting bones. Normally the foot has five toes on it called phalanges. These connect to long bones called metatarsals. Each toe (phalanx) consists of small bones. The forefoot takes on half of the body's weight. The ball of the foot is where the pressure of weight is balanced.

Shock absorber .

The arch of the foot has five irregular shaped bones called tarsal bones. These combine to serve as a shock absorber during walking, running, climbing and many more activities requiring the use of our foot. Without shock absorbers our legs and back would suffer, greatly, whenever we tried to move about on our feet.

Calcaneus .

The calcaneus (heel bone) is in fact the largest bone in the foot. It joins the talus (ankle) bone to form the subtalar joint. Underneath the heel bone is a layer of fat, for the purpose of cushioning. The heel bone is situated in the part of the foot referred to as the hindfoot.
The hallux is the big toe. Sesamoid bones are two small pea shaped bones situated in the big toe.

Gastrocnemius .

The gastrocnemius is a muscle in the lower leg at the back of the calf.

There are twenty muscles in the foot, which are responsible for giving the foot its shape. They hold the bones in proper position as well as expanding and contracting in order to create movement. There are five major muscles in the foot. The anterior tibial muscle is used to move the foot upward. The posterior tibial muscle has the job of supporting the arch. The peroneal tibial muscle controls the outside movement of the ankle. The extensor muscles assist the ankle in raising the toes so we can step forward. The flexor muscles are what hold the toes to the ground so we can stand up with stability.

Tendons .

The elastic tissues are more commonly known as tendons. The foot's largest and strongest tendon is the Achilles tendon. It extends all the way from the calf muscle to the heel. This tendon provides us with the ability to run, jump, walk up stairs and raise ourselves on our toes.

Plantar fascia .

The plantar fascia ligament forms the arch that is located on the sole of the foot. It stretches from the heel to the toes. It stretches and contracts which lets the arch curve or flatten depending on the need at the time such as balance, walking and running.
The medial malleolus and the lateral malleolus are the bony structures that stick out on the sides of our ankles. The extensor hallucis brevis is a muscle located on the top of the foot that aids in the ability to extend the big toe.

Arthritis .

Gout is a form of inflammatory arthritis, which affects more men than women. It is caused by elevated amounts of uric acid that is carried through the bloodstream. It is a condition that affects the big toe's largest joint causing swelling, sudden and severe pain, redness, warmth and tenderness.
Gout can affect many other joints including the instep, ankle, heel, knees, fingers, elbows and wrists. Gout was referred to as "the disease of kings" by Hippocrates.

Podiatrist .

A doctor of podiatric medicine (DPM) is known as a podiatrist. They specialize in the medical care of the foot, the ankle and the lower leg. A podiatrist can work in hospitals, clinics and private practices.
An orthopedist is a doctor for all of the bones in the skeletal system. A nephrologist treats kidney disease and a ventriloquist can manage their voice so it appears to come from somewhere or something else such as a ventriloquist's puppet.
