My local store is slashing off 30% for the 2nd generation of the Scarlett Solo while the 3rd generation is available for the same (previous) price of the 2nd generation. So for example's sake, 100USD for the 3rd gen then 70USD for the 2nd gen.
Is it worth getting the 3rd gen over the 2nd gen? I am planning to record for YouTube and podcast content or stream to Facebook Gaming or Twitch only. No other inputs will be used other than an Audio Technica MB3k/C XLR microphone that I plan to get from my cousin for free.
I also only plan to have my voice EQ'ed slightly via Voicemeeter/OBS so the stream gets an EQ'ed voice. Recordings for YouTube/podcast content will have their EQ via Audacity or Adobe Premiere Pro.
Regarding the environment, I record in a slightly noisy environment (hence the super-cardioid dynamic mic) and I talk more on the softer side.
Budget-wise, I'm fine with either cost since I've already saved up 100 USD for my audio needs. I guess the only question would be, do you think that the 30 USD premium for a newer generation of the Scarlett Solo is worth it for my recording needs?
Or would you suggest a completely different route for my recording/streaming needs? Budget can be stretched to 120 USD only though. The price in Amazon is usually 20USD cheaper than what they cost here in my country. So if Amazon prices are to be used, the budget is about 100 USD.
The 3rd gen focusrite interfaces basically just have newer upgraded preamps and higher headroom. You probably won’t see a difference in just normal streaming/recording uses.
This helps a lot. Would the upgraded pre-amps be a big benefit for noisy environment recording? Or the 'upgrade' isn't much of a jump to realize such from a dynamic super-cardioid mic?
honestly i moved away from focusrite. tried a scarlett solo 2nd gen for a day, and couldn't shake this inescapable delay that just made everything a bit frustrating to manage.
Sorry what? Latency is a thing regardless of what interface you go with and there is a direct monitor feature so you can hear what you're recording back with zero latency. There is absolutely nothing wrong with the interface, you really needed to understand what you were using better.
As more and more people pick up interfaces for recording videos and streams, it's a worry that there will be people who will buy a great piece of studio equipment like the Scarlett Solo, encounter latency as some kind of bug and return it.
Focusrite 2nd gen products have virtually no latency (we're talking sub 1ms) if you adjust the buffer size in the ASIO settings (which is installed if you have installed the official Focusrite drivers for your unit). You simply change the buffer size from the default 128 to 32 or as low as 16 and your latency jumps down to 1ms and lower (but more processing power is needed of your computer to handle such a short buffer size). If you actually took a minute to search this you would've known, it's very simple. Pretty sure this is explained in the manual too.
