A 12-year-old girl from Ottery, Cape Town, who skipped her school sports day and stayed at home alone was raped and had her throat slit by an intruder in her bedroom.
The burglar broke into the Hector Street home just after 9am on Wednesday, found Keelyn Clayton still asleep, and went on a bloody rampage.
Devastated friends and neighbours were still coming to terms with the brutal crime on Wednesday night, in an area known for gang violence. Keelyn, who was a pupil at Steven Road Primary School, was described as a "sweet girl" who would always greet neighbours.
Keelyn had been staying with her foster mother, Toni Fortuin, for just over a year after her biological mother died of breast cancer.
Fortuin described Keelyn as a "very independent girl" who had been taught to lock the doors whenever she was alone at home.
"She would always be walking with a stray dog or cat that she had picked up in the street," Fortuin said.
The family have only been living in the area for six months.
A CD player, DVD player and several CDs were missing from the house, which was turned upside down by the intruder.
On Wednesday the family still trying to find Keelyn's biological father, with whom she had lost contact.
Police believe the prime suspect boasted about the incident to Alroy Julius, who lives nearby, just after 10am.
"I immediately raised the alarm when I heard what he told me," Julius said.
"He was covered in blood and carrying a crate similar to the ones used by dairy companies."
Julius described the suspect, believed to be hiding in the Gugulethu area, as not violent, although he spent time in Pollsmoor Prison last year.
"He's always been stealing, getting into trouble at a young age; he was thrown out of his family home," said Alroy. He said the man was addicted to Mandrax.
"He told me that when he came into the house he had found a little girl sleeping on the bed, he stabbed her and proceeded to ransack the house," said Julius.
Last night angry members of the Ottery community, including local gangsters the Yuru Cats, threatened they would "smash" a house where the suspect sometimes stayed.
The suspect apparently lived with friends in the area as he was not allowed on to his relatives' property because he had allegedly stolen from them in the past.
The serious and violent crimes unit, based in Bishop Lavis, is investigating the case.
