There's a whole big world out there. Here's how every woman can get out and conquer it-solo. This is an inspiring guide for women who want to "fly solo"-yet stay safe, sane, and solvent during their travels. With candid advice and insider's secrets about some of the most exciting places on earth, readers will find: - A quiz to help determine what sorts of trips best suit one's personality, interests, and goals - The essential female-friendly spots every woman should visit - Why each destination is perfect for solo travelers, important foreign phrases, what to pack, what shoes to wear, special events, historical facts, where to meet the global glitterati, and a list of the top ten things women must do while visiting - Where to eat, meet, party, people watch, sunbathe, soul-search, shop, spa, frolic, photograph, and more Whether surfing in Hawaii, strolling the cobblestone streets of St. Petersburg, drinking in Dublin, or swimming with dolphins in the Caribbean, women can take on the world and create lasting memories with the best travel companion ever-themselves!
In her first book, TangoDiva.com founder Williamson uses 10 criteria-among them safety, transportation and friendliness-to determine a list of destinations for adventurous women, then provides the skinny on each. But before delving into her exceedingly thorough chick-trip dispatches, Williamson provides an incisive quiz to help readers determine the best trip for them. Dozens of global hot spots are profiled here, with an especially extensive list of European locations. Rating each of her destinations on four important variables-cultural opportunities, activity level, weather and social interaction-Williamson gives readers a feel for each city; true to her insider's vision, she even dishes out the home phone numbers of American ex-pats willing to offer a home-cooked meal (for a small fee). Other off-the-beaten-track suggestions include trying the Moroccan baths in Paris, and tracking down a bar in Beijing so hip it attracts British DJs-"From Britain!" Even though this easy-to-breeze-through guide offers information on locales as far-flung as Machu Picchu and Tokyo, a number of fun stateside escapes ensures that even "girls" on a limited budget will be ready to lone-wolf it. I can't say enough great things about this book. It truly inspired me to see the world. My book has been through two long European trips. Almost all of her recommendations are great. It's a great book because it's not just a boring travel guide. It gives you the top 10 things to do in each of her recommended cities but also gives clues as to what to bring and what to expect when you get there. I have given this book to all of my friends and they love it as well. It's the best travel book out there. I just wish she would write another one.

The book is in excellent condition, and while I was more than a little irritated with how long it took to get to me (15 days for shipping? C'mon guys) when I got it and opened it, it was a signed copy by the author!! Totally worth the extra wait. :) If you need something a little more speedily you might want to talk to them before you order though. ;)

I have loved this book! I take it everywhere with me so that I can always pick it up and read about another city to travel too. This book is full of entertainment, travel, food, fashion, and safety suggestions. Each city is carefully mapped out and full of wonderful travel ideas for every woman out there. This book doesn't cater to one personality type, it caters to everyone. This book is great for planning your trip!

I bought this book for information on how to save money and feel comfortable when traveling alone. Although this book does cover the issue of safety, it was heavily weighted with advice on how to meet people when traveling single. For my purposes, it had limited value.

Fly Solo is an amazing book! It is a helpful guide to 50 fabulous destinations. Teresa tells it like it is and doesn't hold back. Which is very helpful for a girl on the go with many choices. I am looking forward to reading 50 MORE destinations to Fly Solo! Thank you Tango Diva!

The book provides an extremely general overview of 50 destinations. Omitted, (I'm guessing for security reasons ) is all of Africa, India, the truly interesting islands of Polynesia (mentions Waikiki) the entire Caribbean, Australia west of Sydney and Mexico. Standard European capitol cities get the most ink. There is nothing here that could not be found in the first pages of a Let's Go. I was really hoping for a unique insight found nowhere else. It does list a festival or two and several activities for the given city. No hard specifics like maps, embassy addresses, specific lodging, addresses of restaurants esp open to single diners or specific city areas not to venture into after dark. Lists destinations well along the beaten path. If you are a first time traveller tho, this might be a good armchair read.

I was very excited about this book, and on the surface it seems to be a great idea. I thought I got lots of great ideas for part of my solo trip to Barcelona. However, upon closer inspection, several of the 'must do activities' listed are NOT actually intended for the solo traveler--in fact, they are quite the opposite. Two of the ten 'must dos' are done by a 'company' that specializes in personalized tours, for which there is a premium charge for booking for 'only two' people--nevermind one. And who wants to go on a private solo tour? That would be quite uncomfortable, and I feel most solo travelers would agree with me on that (after all, part of the fun of traveling on your own is meeting new people--you can't do that on a tour for one!) In my solo traveling mind, I'd like to find tips for group tours that cater to lone travelers, and/or things to do and places to see that are solo friendly. I'd also appreciate fewer references to bars and clubs, because really, as a solo female traveler, I'd be pretty uncomfortable waking into a club all alone--but this is just a personal preference. The reason I even gave this book three stars is because it is organized very well, and I could see using it for figuring out where to go--LONG before you go there. You'd need many more resources after figuring this out, but it does give a good overview. The lack of website information is unfortunate as well--basically, this is a really good book for people who like to read a book and then spend hours researching online.

This book is focused on shopping, drinking, spa visits, and being treated like a "princess" at your hotel. If that is your dream vacation, you might like this. If you would rather have a more integrated experience in a foreign culture, you won't find much help here.

Disappointing

I was really excited when I ordered this book - I'm hoping to travel to India and Thailand in the not too distant future and thought that having a travel guide which is specifically aimed at young women travelling alone might mitigate the culture shock I'm sure to experience and give me some useful tips on how to stay safe, meet fellow travellers and find the best cities to visit whilst out there. Firstly India is not even mentioned, and the only city in that entire region which is listed is Dubai - hardly a definitive list of destinations. About half of the cities listed in the book are in Europe, which though obviously useful, was not what I was expecting. Secondly, forget tips about local culture and personal safety - this book is aimed at young women, so it's like totally about the best places to go shopping and get a mani-pedi, duh! I found it infuriating that a book which is aimed squarely at young women travelling solo takes such a laissez-faire attitude to safety, and is almost bereft of any useful information about local cultures and environment. If you are looking for serious travel tips DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK. If you want to know the best place to get a blow-dry in Germany, go for it.

out of date and aimed at americans

I was really excited about ordering this book and I was hoping to come away with lots of good ideas. I was sadly dissappointed. It seems to be aimed at American and talks about places that are easy to get to which for someone in the UK it is not the case! Very out of date refering to things that will be happening in 2010. It seems more aimed at people who want to travel and flirt, rather than a guide to good safe places for solo females to discover. The first book I have ever returned to Amazon

Inspiring read!! Passport ready ;))
