Flu vaccines cause 'viral interference' and leaves the person more susceptible to coronavirus.

A study by Cowling et al. (2012) explains that recipients of the flu vaccine “had an increased risk of virologically-confirmed non-influenza infections (relative risk: 4.40; 95% confidence interval: 1.31-14.8)” that included “influenza A (H3N2), coxsackie/echovirus, and coronavirus 229E.”

The study explains that although participants who received the trivalent inactivated influenza vaccine had a non-significant lower risk of catching flu, they had a higher risk of acute respiratory illness and febrile acute respiratory illnesses that were confirmed to be non-influenza respiratory virus infections.

It is suggested that the innate immune response is more agile if not pretrained in one direction by a vaccine.

Funding: although two of the authors had worked for vaccine companies in the past, no vaccine company had any connection with this study and funding came from Hong Kong University grants.

A study by Schultz-Cherry (2015) noted that viral interference has been long understood and accepted in science. Jenner reported in 1804 that herpetic infections may prevent the development of vaccinia lesions. Interference is dependent on the strain of virus and the interval between the first and second infection. The shedding of the first virus is thought to induce a temporary state of immunity that is not seen if secondary infection occurs 10–14 days after primary infection. This occurred with both antigenically related and antigenically unrelated viruses. The finding that the outcome was dependent on the viral combinations suggests that different influenza viruses induce differing levels of temporary immunity.

A study by Wolff (2019) found that although the influenza vaccine gave some protection against influenza, it left the vaccinated more prone to developing other respiratory infections including coronavirus.

Funding: no conflict of interests in the study.
