Florida Gators Advance to Final Four

Florida Gators Stun No. 1 Seed in March Madness Upset

Gainesville, FL — March 30, 2025 — In a thrilling overtime showdown, the underdog Florida Gators men’s basketball team pulled off a stunning 78-76 victory over the top-seeded Kansas Jayhawks in the Elite Eight, advancing to the Final Four for the first time since 2014.

The game, played in front of a raucous crowd at Madison Square Garden, came down to the wire. Junior guard Ethan Rivera sank a buzzer-beating three-pointer in overtime, sending Gator fans into a frenzy and capping off a career-high 28-point performance.

'Coach drew up the play, and I just trusted my shot,' Rivera said in a post-game interview. 'This team never quits. We believed we could do this, and now we're heading to Phoenix!'

Florida’s defense was key in containing Kansas’ high-powered offense, with sophomore forward Marcus Johnson recording five blocks and 12 rebounds. Head coach Todd Golden, in his third season with the Gators, praised his team’s resilience.

'These guys fought for every possession,' Golden said. 'We knew Kansas was talented, but our guys executed the game plan perfectly when it mattered most.'

The victory marks a dramatic turnaround for Florida, which entered the tournament as a No. 7 seed after a rocky regular season. Now, the Gators will face the winner of the Houston-UConn matchup in the national semifinals.

As the team celebrated on the court, chants of 'It’s Great to Be a Florida Gator!' echoed through the arena. With one more win, Florida could be playing for its first national championship since 2007.
