FloĀ­rence is a coastal city in Lane County, in the U.S. state of OreĀ­gon. It lies at the mouth of the SiusĀ­law River on the PaĀ­cific Ocean and about midĀ­way beĀ­tween NewĀ­port and Coos Bay along U.S. Route 101. As of the 2010 cenĀ­sus, the city had a total popĀ­uĀ­laĀ­tion of 8,466.[6]

The FloĀ­rence area was origĀ­iĀ­nally inĀ­habĀ­ited by the SiusĀ­law tribe of NaĀ­tive AmerĀ­iĀ­cans. Some claim that the city was named after state senĀ­aĀ­tor A. B. FloĀ­rence, who repĀ­reĀ­sented Lane County from 1858 to 1860; anĀ­other claim is that FloĀ­rence was named after a French vesĀ­sel that was wrecked at the mouth of the SiusĀ­law River on FebĀ­ruĀ­ary 17, 1875.[7]
On NoĀ­vemĀ­ber 12, 1970, FloĀ­rence was the site of a faĀ­mous scene, when town auĀ­thorĀ­iĀ­ties used 20 cases of exĀ­ploĀ­sives to try to blow up a dead beached whale, with unĀ­inĀ­tended consequences.[8][9][10][11] In 2020 resĀ­iĀ­dents voted to name a new park ExĀ­plodĀ­ing Whale MemoĀ­rĀ­ial Park.[12]
FloĀ­rence is loĀ­cated on the OreĀ­gon Coast at the mouth of the SiusĀ­law River imĀ­meĀ­diĀ­ately north of OreĀ­gon Dunes NaĀ­tional RecreĀ­ation Area, at about the same latĀ­iĀ­tude as EuĀ­gene, OreĀ­gon. It is apĀ­proxĀ­iĀ­mately midĀ­way beĀ­tween the other major cenĀ­tral OreĀ­gon coastal cities of NewĀ­port and Coos Bay. FloĀ­rence anĀ­nexed DriftĀ­wood Shores hotel and conĀ­ferĀ­ence cenĀ­ter north of town in HecĀ­eta Beach in 2008.[13]
The unĀ­inĀ­corĀ­poĀ­rated comĀ­muĀ­nity of GleĀ­nada lies just across the SiusĀ­law on U.S. Route 101 to the south of FloĀ­rence, and the city of Yachats is 23 miles (37Ā km) to the north.[14]
AcĀ­cordĀ­ing to the United States CenĀ­sus BuĀ­reau, the city has a total area of 5.87 square miles (15.20Ā km2), of which 5.30 square miles (13.73Ā km2) is land and 0.57 square miles (1.48Ā km2) is water.[15]
As of the cenĀ­sus[2] of 2010, there were 8,466 peoĀ­ple, 4,226 houseĀ­holds, and 2,374 famĀ­iĀ­lies livĀ­ing in the city. The popĀ­uĀ­laĀ­tion denĀ­sity was 1,597.4 inĀ­habĀ­iĀ­tants per square mile (616.8/km2). There were 5,103 housĀ­ing units at an avĀ­erĀ­age denĀ­sity of 962.8 per square mile (371.7/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 92.5% White, PaĀ­cific IsĀ­lander, 1.4% 1.3% NaĀ­tive AmerĀ­iĀ­can, 1.0% Asian, 0.3% African AmerĀ­iĀ­can,0.3%, PaĀ­cific IsĀ­lander, 1.4% from other races, and 3.2% from two or more races. HisĀ­panic or Latino of any race were 5.4% of the popĀ­uĀ­laĀ­tion.
There were 4,226 houseĀ­holds, of which 15.8% had chilĀ­dren under the age of 18 livĀ­ing with them, 43.7% were marĀ­ried couĀ­ples livĀ­ing toĀ­gether, 9.2% had a feĀ­male houseĀ­holder with no husĀ­band preĀ­sent, 3.3% had a male houseĀ­holder with no wife preĀ­sent, and 43.8% were non-famĀ­iĀ­lies. 37.0% of all houseĀ­holds were made up of inĀ­diĀ­vidĀ­uĀ­als, and 21.9% had someĀ­one livĀ­ing alone who was 65 years of age or older. The avĀ­erĀ­age houseĀ­hold size was 1.98 and the avĀ­erĀ­age famĀ­ily size was 2.51.
The meĀ­dian age in the city was 57 years. 13.9% of resĀ­iĀ­dents were under the age of 18; 5.9% were beĀ­tween the ages of 18 and 24; 15.5% were from 25 to 44; 28.4% were from 45 to 64; and 36.4% were 65 years of age or older. The genĀ­der makeup of the city was 46.4% male and 53.6% feĀ­male.
Per the census[4] of 2000, there were 7,263 peoĀ­ple, 3,564 houseĀ­holds, and 2,145 famĀ­iĀ­lies livĀ­ing in the city. The 2007 popĀ­uĀ­laĀ­tion esĀ­tiĀ­mate was 8,270.[17] The popĀ­uĀ­laĀ­tion denĀ­sity was 1,476.3 peoĀ­ple per square mile (570.0/km2). There were 4,174 housĀ­ing units at an avĀ­erĀ­age denĀ­sity of 848.4 per square mile (327.6/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 95.88% White, 0.28% African AmerĀ­iĀ­can, 0.92% NaĀ­tive AmerĀ­iĀ­can, 0.55% Asian, 0.14% PaĀ­cific IsĀ­lander, 0.56% from other races, and 1.67% from two or more races. 2.37% of the popĀ­uĀ­laĀ­tion were HisĀ­panic or Latino of any race. There were 3,564 houseĀ­holds, out of which 16.9% had chilĀ­dren under the age of 18 livĀ­ing with them, 48.6% were marĀ­ried couĀ­ples livĀ­ing toĀ­gether, 9.3% had a feĀ­male houseĀ­holder with no husĀ­band preĀ­sent, and 39.8% were non-famĀ­iĀ­lies. 34.4% of all houseĀ­holds were made up of inĀ­diĀ­vidĀ­uĀ­als, and 21.7% had someĀ­one livĀ­ing alone who was 65 years of age or older. The avĀ­erĀ­age houseĀ­hold size was 2.02 and the avĀ­erĀ­age famĀ­ily size was 2.52.
In the city, the popĀ­uĀ­laĀ­tion disĀ­perĀ­sal was 16.8% under the age of 18, 5.0% from 18 to 24, 16.0% from 25 to 44, 23.9% from 45 to 64, and 38.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The meĀ­dian age was 56 years. For every 100 feĀ­males, there were 84.8 males. For every 100 feĀ­males age 18 and over, there were 82.1 males. The meĀ­dian inĀ­come for a houseĀ­hold in the city was $30,505, and the meĀ­dian inĀ­come for a famĀ­ily was $36,784. Males had a meĀ­dian inĀ­come of $30,962 verĀ­sus $23,878 for feĀ­males. The per capita inĀ­come for the city was $18,008. 14.4% of the popĀ­uĀ­laĀ­tion and 10.0% of famĀ­iĀ­lies were below the poverty line. 25.9% of those under the age of 18 and 8.3% of those 65 and older were livĀ­ing below the poverty line.
The forĀ­mer mainĀ­stays of FloĀ­rence's econĀ­omy were logĀ­ging, comĀ­merĀ­cial fishĀ­ing, and agriĀ­culĀ­ture,[18] but today tourism is inĀ­creasĀ­ingly significant.[19] Some local busiĀ­nesses inĀ­clude Sand MasĀ­ter Park, Mo's RestauĀ­rants and Three Rivers Casino ReĀ­sort, which is run by the ConĀ­fedĀ­erĀ­ated Tribes of Coos, Lower Umpqua and SiusĀ­law InĀ­diĀ­ans. The Port of SiusĀ­law proĀ­motes comĀ­merĀ­cial fishĀ­ing, shipĀ­ping and tourism.[20] About one-third of FloĀ­rence's popĀ­uĀ­laĀ­tion conĀ­sists of reĀ­tirees.[21]
FloĀ­rence has hosted the RhodoĀ­denĀ­dron FesĀ­tiĀ­val anĀ­nuĀ­ally since 1908.[18]
The SiusĀ­law PiĀ­oĀ­neer MuĀ­seum is loĀ­cated in a hisĀ­toric 1905 schoolhouse.[22][23]
Old Town FloĀ­rence is loĀ­cated on the SiusĀ­law riverĀ­front. The Port of SiusĀ­law maĀ­rina is to the east, and the Art Deco 1936 SiusĀ­law River Bridge is to the west. The boardĀ­walk promĀ­eĀ­nade was built along the maĀ­rina to imĀ­prove the area.[24] Many busiĀ­nesses are on US101 itĀ­self, which runs through the town, north to south.
North of FloĀ­rence on U.S. Route 101 are the Sea Lion Caves, a tourist atĀ­tracĀ­tion that feaĀ­tures a sea cave that is the year-round home of a popĀ­uĀ­laĀ­tion of Steller sea lions.
HisĀ­toric buildĀ­ings on the NaĀ­tional RegĀ­isĀ­ter of HisĀ­toric Places in the FloĀ­rence area inĀ­clude the Edwin E. BeneĀ­dict House, a deĀ­teĀ­riĀ­oĀ­ratĀ­ing house on the SiusĀ­law River that is said to have been Ken Kesey's inĀ­spiĀ­raĀ­tion for the StamĀ­per House in his novel SomeĀ­times a Great NoĀ­tion,[25] HecĀ­eta Head LightĀ­house and KeepĀ­ers QuarĀ­ters, Jessie M. HonĀ­eyĀ­man MemoĀ­rĀ­ial State Park HisĀ­toric DisĀ­trict, the SiusĀ­law River Bridge, and the William Kyle and Sons BuildĀ­ing in Old Town.[citation needed]
There are sevĀ­eral parks and other sites manĀ­aged by the OreĀ­gon Parks and RecreĀ­ation DeĀ­partĀ­ment near FloĀ­rence, inĀ­cludĀ­ing DarĀ­lingĀ­toĀ­nia State NatĀ­ural Site and HecĀ­eta Head LightĀ­house at Devil's Elbow to the north, and Jessie M. HonĀ­eyĀ­man MemoĀ­rĀ­ial State Park to the south. The OreĀ­gon Dunes NaĀ­tional RecreĀ­ation Area, manĀ­aged as part of the SiusĀ­law NaĀ­tional ForĀ­est, beĀ­gins south of FloĀ­rence.
FloĀ­rence is served by the three-school SiusĀ­law School DisĀ­trict, which inĀ­cludes SiusĀ­law ElĀ­eĀ­menĀ­tary School, SiusĀ­law MidĀ­dle School, and SiusĀ­law High School.[26] Lane ComĀ­muĀ­nity ColĀ­lege has a cenĀ­ter in Florence.[27]
