The Flash Player is a browser plugin previously used to play online games before browsers could handle animations natively. When the internet was new, web pages consisted of just text, images, and links. Early browsers like Netscape, Internet Explorer and early versions of Chrome didn't have the ability to create complex animations. A company called Macromedia, which was an early developer of the Flash plugin was the first to see the Flash technology grow. Originally, Flash was created to play animations. However, it was quickly adapted to created games. Once the technology was purchased by Adobe Inc, Flash player use grew to support an entire platform of games and apps. Over one hundred thousand Flash games were developed and possibly as many Flash animations representing a generation of the early internet. Fast forward 20 years, fast-paced development from large tech companies has enabled open standards capable of creating rich web applications and games. See Html5 Games and Webgl Games .
With so many created, we believe they are worth preserving online as long as possible to keep the history they showcase. Some of these games were developed during the Dot Com Bubble. Others during the Great Recession. Many of the darkest games had to be disabled as social norms have shifted. The majority of games are positive and represent the interactive art created over the first 30 years of the early internet.
