The ability to upgrade items allows players to improve their weapons and gear with new affixes that boost the base stats of the item or giving additional benefits. To upgrade items, the player must have the item in their inventory, and also access the kiln.
Typically objects that have weak bases (like rings) can be upgraded to a more powerful base, while items with strong bases such as Eth titans don't change much in their stats after being upgraded.
Upgrade components

There are three kinds of upgrade components: universal upgrades, prefix upgrades and suffix upgrades. upgrade item Casesgg , which comprise gems, can be put in any kind of equipment and offer less bonuses than upgrade components that are type-restricted. Infusions, which can only be placed in ascended gear or legendary equipment are exactly the same as gems, but offer higher bonuses and cannot be placed in any other kind of equipment. Suffix upgrades can be added to gathering tools. They will add the suffix at the end of the item's name. If the player upgrades their gathering tool, and replaces the glyphs with a different one, the old one will be returned to their inventory. However, replacing any other upgrade component can destroy it, except for inscriptions which can be freely swapped.
Leveling
The upgrade system in Path of Exile has some significant variations from previous versions. Gear is now divided into tracks, and items can only be upgraded a specific number of times before they are "leveled out." The costs for upgrading increase with each level, however the materials required for upgrades do not. This allows players to focus their efforts on a few items and maximize the impact of those items, instead of spreading upgrade costs over multiple pieces.
