Lolita's Personality
Macaws are a wonderful companion bird. They are intelligent and affectionate. These birds do best with well-rounded families. They can get bored easily and will find other ways to entertain themselves if their owners aren't interacting with them enough. Macaws that aren't socialized can become aggressive, and can even bite. It is important to establish clear boundaries so the macaw does not feel threatened.
Blue and Gold Macaws, in general are active birds that are a joy to play with, interact with and climb. They should spend at least two to three hours each day in the outdoors for mental stimulation and physical exercise. They love playing games, listening to music and learning tricks. They enjoy visiting parks and playgrounds as well as hiking, local restaurants and bars. In addition to being a great pet, they also make loving pets for children.
Despite their adoring appearance, these birds are very loud and can be a nuisance for those living close by. They can be heard making ear-shattering calls and screech-calls, which can be disruptive in apartments and condos or near young children who might be startled by their roar.
Another interesting trait of this particular species is that it is monomorphic meaning males and females are difficult to distinguish. For this reason, DNA testing is the only reliable method to determine sex. Once sex is established pairing of the birds can be tried and breeding can begin.
Blue and Gold Macaws, like all pets, require training to learn commands and phrases. It is a lengthy process, and the pet's owner has to be patient and realize that this is a difficult task. Positive reinforcement can accelerate the process and aid in resolving any issues with behavior.
Lolita's care
For a long time activists have been calling for the release of Lolita from performing tricks at Miami Seaquarium and relocation to an open sea pen. Following the 1993 film Free Willy sparked public outrage over the reintegration of orca Keiko into the wild, conservationists believed that Lolita would suffer a similar fate. Unfortunately, she didn't get the chance to go back to the ocean.
Lolita's captors, known as the Dolphin Company, have ignored veterinary recommendations and continued to put her at risk. They undermine her health by making her perform for tourists, and over-exerting her by putting her through head-first dives that expose her to chlorine, making her lose weight and weakening her immune system. Additionally, they put her in an incredibly small tank that is less than one-and-a half times the size of her natural habitat.
Fortunately, in 2022 the new owner of Miami Seaquarium pledged to work with a group of Lolita advocates called Friends of Toki and the Lummi tribe, who consider her a relative, on a plan to eventually transport her to open waters. The plan included a facility in Washington's westcoast, where she could live for the remainder of her life receiving human care and be monitored by scientists. The sanctuary pen was expected to be hundreds of time larger than her Miami house and was surrounded by ocean, but not concrete tanks.
If the plan had been successful, Lolita (also called Tokitae or Toki) could be alive. In the wild, killers whales are social animals who connect with their family members until they die. Lolita has been a captive at Seaquarium for 40 years. Activists across the country, including Ric O'Barry (former Flipper trainer), Empty The Tanks and Orca Network have urged her retirement from Seaquarium's stage and her eventual release into the wild.

Lolita's Diet
Like any species of animal captive, a blue and gold macaw's health is dependent on a balanced diet. These beautiful birds require premium food and plenty of fresh vegetables, fruits and whole grains. In captivity, a well-fed macaw is likely to live up to 60 years. This majestic bird also needs plenty of space to fly and exercise.
A macaw with gold and blue eyes can be a charming friend but is also extremely intelligent. They are renowned for their ability to learn new tricks and words quickly. This bird is ideal for those who are just beginning their journey into the avian species.
In addition, this bird requires lots of interaction and bonds with her human family members effortlessly. Lolita's Health

Lolita has been living at the Miami Seaquarium since 1970 and was an attraction for tourists for many years. She has been fighting persistent illnesses and an infection that has left in a vulnerable state.
The Dolphin Company, which now owns the Miami Seaquarium and is owned by the Dolphin Company has not provided any information regarding the condition of Lolita. However, the non-profit group Friends of Toki has provided monthly updates about her health and well-being on their website. These updates indicate that Toki is aging quickly and her health has declined.
It is not clear what health issues are plaguing the orca, since her captor is not required to divulge the information. However, a database of necropsies taken from Sea World that was created by the Orca Project shows that kidney disease is a common cause in the deaths of orcas kept in captivity.
Despite the ongoing health issues Many are hopeful that Lolita may be closer to living in the wild than before. The new owner of the Seaquarium has pledged to moving the whale out of her tank and into her natural habitat in the Pacific.
After years of pressure from PETA and others, the Miami Seaquarium has finally released Lolita to a seaside sanctuary, where she can swim deep in the water and possibly even be being reunited with her mother orca. The plans were not enough to save the whale, which died on Friday due to what was thought to be a kidney issue.
