The flying autonomous Uber

Yash Yadav

Hello there,

Do you remember me complaining about the dryness in my hometown? I think the Rain God reads my newsletter and your author had a refreshing terrace bath yesterday \m/

News recently covered the successful launch of the first SpaceX shuttle with humans onboard. Whether you read about the event or not, your five minutes now won’t be wasted as I talk about SpaceX, the falcon heavy, and the crew dragon. Grab your tea, let’s begin.

SpaceX

We all of course have heard about this company. It was founded by Elon Musk when he just kind of felt like taking life to mars. Yep, that’s it. It is one of the ideas that randomly strike a mind and this guy went ahead and started conceptualizing the possibility of “Mars Oasis”.

Why mars rovers when you can have mars flowers

Too bad back in 2001 NASA’s rocket science was not apt for this level at that time. So, he, along with friends Jim and Adeo went to Russia to connect with companies such as Lavochkin and ISC Kosmotras. However, Musk was seen as a novice and the discussion didn’t go well. Yes, they went back to America empty-handed.

What do you do when you want something done but nobody’s listening? Well if you’re rich you buy people and make them do it. And today we have SpaceX, running strong to one day plant a flower on the Martian land.

But that’s gonna take time and for now we can look at the accomplishments made so far.

Uber, but faster

While a lot of cars globally are standing motionless right now because corona decided so. There’s one that didn’t stop for a second and is running full throttle as it did in the BC(Before Corona). It’s Elon’s personal Tesla roadster. Which has been flying ever since its launch in February 2018 It’s circling the Sun as an artificial satellite.

The Tesla was carried out by SpaceX’s Flacon Heavy rocket which presently has the highest carrying capacity of any launch vehicle and is partially reusable. The propellent can come back after supporting the main carrier within the earth’s atmosphere and then detach and land back to the ground like an airplane. Cool stuff, not originally done by SpaceX but presently best carried out by them, thanks to Elon’s crazy mind.

Alright, back to the starman. (Whats starman? Elon’s Tesla Roadster). You can fangirl F1 in all the way you want but it’s nowhere close to the speeds the Roadster is running at. With a speed of 33,240 KMPH, this car has already completed one orbit around the sun and is halfway there to cover another. Ever seen a satellite so fancy before? Yes, it’s basically useless and all it does is play “Space Oddity” on repeat in space. Legends say The Guardians of the galaxy are driving it now because...it…has music.

Here comes the driver

So, the car’s there, rocketing around our star, kicking the music for the outsiders. But something’s missing.

The plan was to take life on the moon right? Is that on track? Maybe. And when do they plan to achieve this? Elon is targeting 2024, which is really close considering SpaceX hasn’t landed on moon yet, and mars is a bit further away.

But we are not there yet (well we are nowhere but locked inside), but SpaceX is not there yet. And while we are at it, let us see the Crew dragon that took humans (and a stuffed dinosaur) to the space station.

Why is it special? It’s the only private shuttle to ever reach have made such accomplishment, loads of companies are trying. Some have been trying since earlier than SpaceX. I’m looking at You Boeing and Blue Origin. (Lesson: You must buy the right rocket scientists. That means kidnapping people from NASA.)

Being private gives them the opportunity to try out new. Which they did certainly. No buttons or knobs anywhere! Everything is touch-operated, but it’s not running android; SpaceX doesn’t want to share data with Google. The black-and-white suit also aligns perfectly with the interior design of the Crew Dragon and is far thinner than the previously used bulky suits. The bulky suits are still available for them in the ISS just so they can be the Baymax (from Big Hero 6) if they wanted to.

Well there we have it, two more people successfully escaped the virus-ridden planet, much like the transformers left Cybertron when it was doomed.

Oh, looking for the driver part? Well, I lied. The Tesla is driving on autopilot and doesn’t need no manual drivers. No casualties so far. :-p
