There are only a few words available in isiXhosa to refer to a vagina in a pleasant way— usisi, inhenhenhe, ikuku, umphantsi . When I was young, I viewed mine as being merely functional insofar as my menstrual cycle and other biological functions were concerned. I was happy with that.
Until a boy’s curious hands to help me understand what my vagina is really about.
In Grade 9, our Bible Education teacher at school went through the implications of exploring sexuality with boys. The hidden message was that males were physical and females emotional. Because we, as girls, responded to sex emotionally, we should never let boys take advantage of us. Enjoying what happened between a boy and a girl was simply not an option—it would lead to the girl being called ‘loose’.
In my early teens I had a chronic case of what my friends and I called ‘the disease to please’. The main symptom of this illness was that if any boy showed an interest in me and made advances, he was bound to get the answer he was looking for. At primary school I had been described as playing hard to get and now I was loose. I can’t explain how this radical shift happened—perhaps it was partly curiosity and partly searching for attention.
I had heard about being fingered but didn’t know any of the details, so when it happened, I was shocked and unprepared. I have to say it was a pleasant surprise. I don’t remember if the boy was my ‘official boyfriend’ or not, but whenever we went out we ended up kissing. The step from kissing to touching was not communicated, it just happened. His hands managed to find their way to my vagina while we were kissing and I remember sitting in a position that made it easy for him to venture ‘down there’.
Later he started to kiss my vagina, an even more pleasant surprise. I had never realised my vagina had the possibility of evoking a good feeling. And that’s how I became acquainted with the silence around sexuality: that it is not, in fact, dirty but something that can be enjoyable.
Yet a girl who let boys touch her was considered a bad girl and I didn’t want to be bad for the rest of my teenage years. I soon learned to restrain myself, mostly by avoiding boys I found attractive lest they should venture ‘down there’ and release a flood of forbidden sensations and emotions.
This attitude has carried over to my adult life and is taking a lot of work to undo, because the reality is that I am a woman with desires that I shouldn’t be afraid of.
