Did you know that in 1900, hundreds of lady horse-cab drivers were working in Paris? And that around the same time, electric cars accounted for about one-third of all the vehicles on U.S. roads? Or that due to sexist concerns over the physical strength of women, female participation to Olympic sports was strongly discouraged, creating in some cases, less demanding female versions that still persist today?
The project Cinema’s First Nasty Women consists of a collection of 99 films sourced from 13 archives and provides a glimpse into the early 20th century that was rife with radical technological and social innovations, as well as with unscientific and prejudiced assumptions. In this program we will delve into the historical context of a small selection of films in search of new insights into the mindset of our ancestors.
Cinema’s First Nasty Women features rarely-seen silent films about feminist protest, anarchic slapstick destruction, and suggestive gender play, spotlighting slapstick comediennes and cross-dressing women of the silent screen, often obscure performers whose recognition and resurrections have been long overdue.
