The Character: Fiona Gallagher, played by Emmy Rossum
The legal guardian of an unruly brood of latchkey kids, Fiona has a daily grind that includes warding off her alcoholic deadbeat dad (William H. Macy), supplementing the family's constantly draining funds, and attempting to better herself with only scrappy genetics and a GED as collateral. Oh, and trying to keep a boyfriend.
"Fiona has a limited amount of clothing, and she doesn't have time to think about putting things together, unless she's going on a date. In montages where she's just throwing on clothes, trying to decide what to wear, we make sure all the dresses still have the tags on them—Fiona has her own tagging gun. We know she'll wear it, retag it, and then return it to the store. At different points throughout the season, several characters wear the same clothes, and we try to repeat looks—the sweater she's wearing in this shot (above right) actually belongs to her brother Lip [Jeremy Allen White]. And in later episodes, we decided that her Aunt Ginger had made that scarf. I had it made extra-long so she could hide the whole bottom half of her face when it's really cold; it's functional but also inappropriate—far too skinny to really protect her. The jacket is Abercrombie & Fitch; we have to have four of them because things are always happening to Fiona—there's always a stunt, people throw up, all that stuff. We spend a lot of time aging everything she wears—putting holes in it, thrashing it, pulling it out of shape. But we cheat on the jeans. She wears a lot of 7 For All Mankind. The producers are always asking, 'Why don't you go to a thrift store for her jeans?' I say, 'Look, she went to a thrift shop and bought some jeans for $5; the previous owner had already moved on to the next designer.' How does Fiona shop? She probably gets some stuff from her best friend, Veronica; she thrifts; maybe she shoplifts. In Chicago there are swap meets in the tougher neighborhoods where you can buy eight bras for $2. I'm a coal miner's daughter, and I grew up very poor in the northeast of England, and yet we all managed to have a sense of style. It's just about finding the fine line between making her look ugly and making her look poor. There still are moments where we've failed, because she looks far too good."
The Character: Juliette Barnes, played by Hayden Panettiere
Country singer Juliette pulled herself up from the trailer park to the Grand Ole Opry. Dogged by a seedy past, a poorly masked inferiority complex, and a teenybopper rep she can't seem to shake, she's consumed by a desire to unseat the queen of country, Rayna Jaymes (Connie Britton), and typically counters every good decision—particularly when it comes to men—with a terrible one.
"When we started, Juliette was wearing cutoffs, cowboy boots, and sparkly tops. We've sort of been moving away from that. It's something I think about a lot: Have we sped up the evolution of this girl too much? Juliette wants to be taken seriously as an artist. She doesn't want to be just a flash-in-the-pan country-pop star. She's young and rich and can buy whatever she wants, so if she wants something, she gets it. Period. If she sees something in a fashion magazine, I imagine she just says to her assistant, 'Get this for me.' The expensive leather jeans, Stella McCartney bag, and IRO jacket she's wearing here are staples for Juliette. Most of her clothes come from boutiques in L.A., plus Net-a-Porter, ShopBop, and Intermix, where I got that jacket. Juliette is always a little bit provocative: The skirts are always a little too short. she'll go to a business meeting in a peekaboo jacket. But for this scene, a meeting with the new head of her record label, she purposefully did her hair in a more sophisticated style. Here's a girl with no formal education, who grew up in a trailer park and at singing competitions. What she considers a power look isn't necessarily what a Harvard business graduate would wear, you know? She's a damaged girl, and she dresses to seduce people—not necessarily sexually, but to get her way."
The Character: Jessica Pearson, played by Gina Torre
A partner at a white-shoe New York City law firm, Jessica is a Smith College grad with a degree in English literature and a well-honed ability to command any situation. In her arsenal: a vaguely patrician accent, conversation-terminating eye rolls, and a working knowledge of brown liquors.
"I think Jessica's clothing choices stem from old-world wealth. Style is in her blood, and it just comes naturally to her when she shops. I always envision her going to her favorite stores each season. Gina personally loves [the boutique] The Room in Toronto, where we film, and I get a lot of the clothes there. I see a classic romanticism in her character's approach to a lot of things—I bet she even wears quality undergarments with a romantic feel to them. Here, she's in a Gucci runway dress and shoes; we had to track that dress down. You'll see a few more pieces from Gucci's fall 2013 collection next season. The earrings are from Carole Tanenbaum, a vintage collector in Toronto. Even when things are spiraling out of control in her world, I don't think Jessica's an impulsive shopper; I prefer to think she's a collector. She's aware of what's happening in fashion because it's a tool of representation, and she knows that if you find that perfect nude shoe, you can't replicate it. Shoes—that might be one of her more compulsive buys. She'll see something in the window and quickly decide, 'I'm buying that.' "
The Character: Elizabeth Jennings, played by Keri Russell
As a KGB operative at the end of the Cold War, Elizabeth is hiding in plain sight in the suburbs of DC. In addition to negotiating two identities—happily married American mother of two and no-limits soldier for the motherland—she also quick-changes through a myriad of undercover personae, from pleather-clad call girl to mousy nurse.
"To portray a life of relative luxury, Elizabeth will pay for quality things. And while she's the kind of woman who can aesthetically and intellectually appreciate the value of a piece, I don't think she puts on a cashmere sweater and feels especially cozy—there's nothing hedonistic about fashion for her. She knows the way she wants Elizabeth to look, and so she gets it done, just like everything else. I feel like all of the other women on the show shop at the same place, but Elizabeth shops at some sort of imaginary, timeless boutique. In some ways, she's a superhero. There is something purposefully unreal about her. I always try to keep Elizabeth not just era- but year- and month-appropriate. We start season two in January 1982, so it's really important to me that we don't use any trends that haven't yet hit. Everyone expected this sort of mom-jeans look, but that very pegged-leg, fuller-top jean really wasn't mainstream until '83 or '84. Here she's wearing vintage Riders by Lee: the blouse, belt, and jewelry are all vintage. Her boots are J.Crew, but that style—the stacked heel, high boot—hasn't really changed in the past 40 years or so. The trench coat is from the Coach Legacy line, but I felt like it harkened back to that time period. Keri's such a good collaborator: She's the first one to pop a collar, push up a sleeve, or adjust a garment so that it works on her figure. She doesn't just put something on and expect it to do all the work. There are certain things we call Holy Grail pieces: I'm always looking for really good Calvin Klein denim. And I think Fiorucci Safety Jeans would be so much fun."
