Finnish gambling market cuts problem gamblers

The study was the first since November 2020, as the global pandemic prevented people from investigating more than once in 2021. Taloustutkimus, a market research firm, was responsible for and collected data. The survey involved an average of 5,000 Finnish gamblers, 1.8 percent of whom were problem players. Compared to 2020, when this ratio was 2.6%, the difference is significant.

Susana Saikkonen, Vice President of Sustainability at Veikkaus, is convinced that the main cause of the positive outcome is the action taken with Veikkaus to provide a safer gambling space. The decrease in the number of slot machines also contributed to the problem gambling data.

The survey has been conducted several times a year since 2017. According to Tallustukimus, the number of problem gambling customers in history is 3%.

Mr Saikonen also shared future plans to tackle problem gambling. When lottery laws are activated, it will be easier to identify and influence gambling problem users. Bekaus will also adopt a new method of identifying dangerous gambling.

Bekaus announced new measures for more responsible gambling in the country. In early 2022, in addition to the gambling limit that already exists, the loss limit for annual certified gambling begins. Activated for all casinos except those located in Helsinki and Tampere.
