Chapter Twenty-Five

Noah was late again.

It wasn't out of the ordinary, and I only minded in that it meant we had less time together. I couldn't even really complain about that, seeing as we'd just spent the week together in Montreal. Maybe it just felt like a lot since we'd gone from one extreme to another; a week of vacation followed by a week where Noah had worked overtime almost every single day.

Still, it meant that I was missing him, and it meant that when I realized it had been almost two weeks since we'd heard from Diane, I couldn't ask him right away.

It was the following Friday that he finally got home at a decent time, though he collapsed next to me on the couch when he walked in.

"Thank God it's the weekend," he groaned. I snuggled into his chest and he wrapped his arms around me. For a few blissful moments, we just held each other.

"Is your mom okay?" I asked. "Have you, um, heard from her?"

"She called me today."

His voice sounded tired, almost dejected.

"How's she doing?"

"Dunno. She was stoned out of her mind. Was laughing her ass off about granola and toast."

I frowned. "Granola and toast?"

"No idea. Told her I had to get back to work and to call me when she was coherent."

We fell silent again. Noah's breathing was steady, and between the gentle sound of his heartbeat and the warmth of his arms around me, I unintentionally ended up dozing on his chest.

It was a short while later when a buzzing against my hip jolted me awake. Noah jumped as well, and I realized we had both fallen asleep.

"That your phone?" he asked.

I shifted up, blinking the sleep from my eyes as I pulled it from my pocket.

"Who is it?"

My hands shook.

"Baby?"

The number had a northern Manitoba area code. The same area code I'd had growing up.

Where my father still lived.

Noah gently took the phone from my hand, looking at me as he answered it.

"Hello?" he asked, his voice vaguely minacious, and listened for a moment. His expression changed, and he looked confused.

"Uh, who's calling?... Just a sec." He covered the speaker of the phone. "You know a Kristen Jones?"

"What?!"

I yanked the phone out of his hands.

"Kristen?"

"Oh my gosh, Lacey! Hi! I thought I might have the wrong number!"

"Um, wow. Hi. Why did you... I can't believe you're calling."

"Right? My gosh, the whole town went insane after you left, it was the drama of the century. I can't believe you never called me! I miss you, girl!"

The bubbliness of her voice was aggravatingly fake.

"Uh, you too. What's, um, up with you these days?"

"Oh, you know, this and that. I can't believe I finally got a hold of you!"

I raised an eyebrow. I hadn't changed my number after leaving town. "You've been trying to reach me?"

"Well, yeah, I wanted to get the scoop! You leave town, the whole drama with, um, the train station, and then your mom leaves a few days later? There was a rumour your dad killed her for a while, but I'm pretty sure that was... I mean, she's okay, right?"

"Um, yeah."

"Your dad won't say anything to anyone about it, just... I mean, you know he's like, kind of freakishly weird now, right? I see him at the liquor store all the time. He's got this crazy beard and—"

"I really don't want to get into it."

"Of course, sure. But obviously things are going well for you!"

"Yeah, I'm doing... pretty good. Um, living in BC and I'm teaching, so that's great. My brother's getting married next month. Things are pretty good."

"Oh come on, Lacey, you know what I'm asking!"

"I really don't."

She laughed, a grating sound that trickled down my spine and made me want to retch.

"Who was that nice-sounding man who answered the phone?"

That nice-sounding man was staring at me, utterly bewildered.

"That would be my boyfriend."

"Girl! Dish, come on."

"Um, his name is Noah. You... don't know him. I don't know what to tell you, Kristen. Sorry. I'm just really... surprised that you called."

"I know, right? It's been so long. Anyway, I'm so happy to hear that you finally have a boyfriend. How long have you been together?"

"Uh, almost two years."

"Ooo, do I hear wedding bells in your future?"

I rolled my eyes. "You'll be the first to know."

"Oh, I knew we were still friends! Well, maybe we'll get to meet him one day!"

I raised an eyebrow again. "We?"

She laughed again, though the superficiality of it was replaced by an awkward, uncomfortable undertone.

"Well, since you mention it, that's, um, kind of why I called."

"To tell me you have a boyfriend?"

"Well, no... I'm kind of, um, having a baby."

"Oh wow. Congratulations, Kristen. I didn't know you had gotten married."

"Um, well, I'm not quite... yet."

There was an awkward pause.

"But he proposed the other day! So we're going to get married this summer."

"That's exciting. Congratulations on that, too."

Another long, awkward silence.

"Um, do you want to know who?" she finally asked.

"Of course, sure. Someone we know?"

She cleared her throat. "Don't be mad, okay?"

"Mad? What are you talking about?"

"I kind of, um, am marrying Roger. Roger Swift?"

She said his name uncertainly, as if I didn't know him. As if I wouldn't remember him tricking me into "meeting" him in Winnipeg, leaving me alone at a train station that led me to the life I had now.

I burst out laughing. "Roger knocked you up? Seriously?"

"You don't have to be so rude about it!"

"And you're actually going to marry him? Roger? Like, we're talking about the same person, right? You hated him!"

"I was jealous, okay? He liked you and—"

"No, no, no," I interrupted. "Don't get that into your head. He was a complete asshole to me."

She gasped. "Did you just swear?"

"Oh good God, Kristen, are you serious?"

"I'm just surprised. I didn't expect that."

I laughed again. "Okay. Whatever. So you're pregnant and you're marrying Roger. That's what you called to tell me?"

"I just wanted... you know, your blessing. Since you and him kind of had a thing."

"We didn't have a thing. He pulled a horrible prank on me and stranded me in fucking Winnipeg."

"Lacey!"

"What? He did! And now you're calling me out of nowhere, asking questions about my family to get some new gossip and to what, make sure I'm okay with you marrying a guy you hated growing up? After not bothering to contact me at any point?"

"I thought you'd be like this," she said haughtily.

"Like what?"

"Bitter that I'm the one who ended up with Roger."

"Don't kid yourself, Kristen. I don't really care what you do. Or Roger, for that matter. I left town for a reason, and I haven't been back for a reason."

"So you're happy for me?"

"I—sure. Sure, congratulations."

"Because you are still my friend and I'd really like you to be my bridesmaid."

"Not a chance. Sorry."

She made a high-pitched noise of offence. "What?"

"I haven't heard from you in ages. I'm not going back there to be in your wedding to Roger Swift."

"I can't believe you. You've changed, Lacey. Forgiveness is divine, you know."

"You're right. I forgive you, Kristen. And tell Roger I forgive him too, will you? If it weren't for him, I'd still be stuck there. Good luck with your little bundle of joy."

I hung up, cutting off another high-pitched tirade.

"Uh, baby?" Noah said tentatively.

"Yes?"

"What the fuck?"

I burst out laughing again, shaking my head as I tried to explain the utter insanity of hearing from a girl I'd grown up with who was pregnant and marrying the man who was indirectly responsible for how much better my life had gotten after having tried his best to ruin it.

"And she thought you were jealous?"

"Right?" I scoffed. "Of what?"

He fell silent for a moment, an uncertain look flickering across his face.

"What's wrong? You don't think I'm actually jealous, do you?"

"No." His fingers danced along the back of my hand before he took it in his. "I just... if we found out you were, you know... p-pregnant, what'd you think we'd do?"

"Cry," I said, and Noah laughed weakly.

"After crying, what would you do?"

I couldn't bring myself to even think of the choices involved. "I don't know if I like this question."

"Tell me, baby," he said softly.

My lip trembled and he squeezed my hand. "What would you do?"

"Whatever you want, I'd support."

"That's not really a valid answer."

"Don't know if I have a valid answer. Not trying to be shitty but... I just don't know."

How was I supposed to tell him? How was I supposed to share the things I'd told Sean in the dressing room in Montreal? How could I possibly admit that after wanting to be a mom for my entire life, I was beginning to question it?

"Baby, I'm sorry," he said.

"No, that's a fair answer. I just..." My chest felt hollow. "I don't think I want kids anymore."

His hand tightened on mine. "Why not?"

I just shook my head. He didn't press the issue, just folded his arms around me and kissed the top of my head.

"Love you," he said firmly. "Don't ever forget that."

I scrunched my face against his chest, using every bit of strength I had to keep from weeping before pulling away. I took a steadying breath as Noah looked at me.

"Feel like Chinese for dinner? I don't really feel like cooking."

nodding, understanding that the conversation was over for now. "Anything you want, baby."

"Anything? What about... Peking duck?"

"You want Peking duck, we'll get Peking duck. Just might have to live on baloney sandwiches for the rest of the month."

"Hmm. Okay, maybe just chow mein."

"Tell you what, you order while I'm in the shower, and add on some green onion cakes for yourself."

"Green onion cakes! You spoil me too much."

"Don't get too flattered, I'm taking at least half."

He kissed me, leaving me breathless, almost making me forgo ordering dinner so I could follow him into the shower.

Chapter Twenty-Six

Noah's birthday was the following weekend, and despite begging him to tell me what he wanted—a present, or to do something, or to go somewhere, or anything—he was infuriatingly noncommittal.

"Just wanna spend time with you," he kept saying. "Don't stress about it. It's just another day."

"It's not just another day!" I protested. "It's your birthday. And it's a Saturday."

"Okay, it's just another Saturday. Should probably go grocery shopping or something."

Frustrated, I made plans that I hoped he would enjoy. The weather was supposed to be nice, so I figured we'd go for a hike and then maybe to dinner.

When I woke up that morning, it was raining, so there went that plan.

Noah was still asleep, his breathing slow and steady. He lay on his back, an arm around my shoulders as I lay beside him, and I was content to stay there while I thought of new ideas for the day. We could go to a movie, but that seemed so... basic, and it didn't fill time the way a hike would have. I could slip out of his arms, quietly leave the room and make him breakfast in bed. He would laugh at the cheesiness of it all, but secretly love every second of it. Or I could call Jordan and Vanessa to see if they wanted to do something. Though, putting up with another day full of baby talk didn't exactly seem like a great way to spend his birthday.

Or, I thought, biting my lip as I glanced down his body, I could do something I'd wanted to do since the very first time we'd slept together and had never been brave enough to try.

Most mornings, it was about a 50/50 chance that I would wake up with Noah's cock jabbing into me. It usually depended on what time we woke up, but even during the week when we got up early for work, I could sometimes feel the tell-tale bulge against me. We almost never had time to do anything about it before we left for work, but on the weekend... well, on the weekend we had plenty of time.

The morning after he'd taken my virginity, I'd asked him what he would have done if I'd gone down on him while he was asleep. He'd been excited by the prospect, but I'd never actually done it. Part of it was nerves, but part of it was that Noah seemed to realize I was awake before I could even try.

The fact that he was lying in the perfect position for me to do so paired with it being his birthday made it seem like a good day to change that.

As carefully as I could, I moved away from Noah's chest. The blankets were tucked around my shoulders and across his stomach, and I paused as I tried to consider the logistics of the next step. If I pulled the blankets off him, he might wake up before I could get his cock in my mouth. If I left them as they were, I'd have to crawl under them and navigate myself between his legs... which might wake him up before I could get his cock in my mouth.

I bit my lip, then decided to take the risk of moving the blankets instead of trying to crawl beneath them.

It was the right choice, despite a harrowing moment when I moved the blanket away from his hip and he moved just the tiniest bit. I thought the jig was up, but he sighed in his sleep and his head tilted slightly to the left. Slowly, carefully, I brought the blankets away from his body, uncovering my prize.

I licked my lips and leaned forward, my eyes flicking back and forth from his face to his cock as my heart raced. He was still sound asleep and I could barely keep from grinning as I brought myself closer and closer. When I finally wrapped my lips around him, his cock twitched, but he didn't move otherwise. I added my hand, fingers circling his shaft, and stroked him lightly as I began bobbing my head.

Noah didn't wake up right away. I thought he might, but he didn't rouse from sleep for a few minutes after I started lazily sucking his cock. He didn't wake up suddenly, either, and for that I was very thankful. Instead, I got to watch as he gradually woke and realized what was happening.

The first sign was barely a sign at all. One moment he was breathing steadily; the next, his inhale came just a little bit quicker. A few moments after that, a soft murmur escaped his lips, and the trace of a smile crossed his face.

Then his hips moved. He didn't quite thrust up, but there was a tightness in his abs that wasn't there before. I pushed his cock a bit further in my mouth before pulling back and stroking a little more firmly, my hand sliding against the slickness left from my saliva.

The next murmur turned into more of a groan. Eyes still closed, his hand found its way to my head, resting lightly beside my face. His breathing was louder than it had been, though not loud by any particular sense of the word. I was certain he was still asleep when I used my other hand to cup his balls ever-so-lightly.

"Ungh," he mumbled. I glanced back up at him, watching as his head tilted on the pillow. His hand tightened into a fist next to my face, then released. He flexed his fingers again and caught a handful of my hair.

"Wha..." he groaned. His stomach tensed again, seconds before his eyes briefly opened.

Another little smile crossed his face, relaxed and satisfied, and he closed his eyes again. I was almost disappointed with his lack of reaction before realizing he was still half-asleep.

I had that realization as his eyes flew back open and his grip on my hair tightened.

"Lacey, what... holy fuck."

A muffled giggle vibrated against the tip of his cock as I pushed it to the back of my throat.

"Holy shit. Holy fuck," he whispered again, and his other hand found my hair as I started moving my head more quickly.

He didn't last long. I wasn't expecting him to. When I'd asked him what he would do if he woke up with his cock in my mouth all that time ago, he'd laughed and said he'd probably come almost as soon as he'd figured out what was happening.

It wasn't instantaneous, but it didn't take long before he was pulling at my hair and groaning.

"Coming," he grunted, and his cock swelled in my mouth as he finished.

I bobbed my head gently, taking every drop of cum from him before letting him fall from my mouth and swallowing. He gasped for breath, head tilted back on the pillow.

"Holy shit," he said as I lay beside him. He wrapped his arms around me and kissed me heatedly.

"Happy birthday," I said when we parted.

He laughed, shaking his head.

"Fuck, baby. That was... you're the best."

We stayed in bed a while longer, cuddling and listening to the sound of the rain.

"What do you want to do today?" I asked. "I was going to suggest a hike, but..."

"This," he said, hugging me more tightly.

I giggled, but he was serious. When I made my suggestions of taking him to a movie or going to dinner, he shook his head.

"Just this," he said. "Just you."

"You have to eat at some point," I reminded him. He grinned wickedly and I smacked his arm lightly. "Actual food, Noah. Let me make you breakfast."

"Mmm, think I'm in the mood for something else... and since it's my birthday, I get to decide."

He wouldn't let me leave the bed to make breakfast until I'd come twice, my legs trembling around his head as he feasted on my pussy. When he finally pulled away, kissing the inside of my thigh before sitting up and grinning that easy, mischievous grin.

"Could go for some breakfast now."

I tried to catch my breath before sitting up.

"Let me get dressed and I'll cook you something."

He shook his head.

"It's my birthday and I decide it's a no-clothes day."

I laughed and shook my head.

"I love you, but I'm not cooking bacon naked. That's asking for disaster."

He thought for a moment.

"I can have bacon any day. Watching you cook naked, though..."

I laughed and protested, but he won me over, which was how I ended up in the kitchen naked, cooking pancakes as he sipped his coffee. It was also how I ended up with maple syrup dripping from my breasts, and with Noah licking it off before "accidentally" smearing more across my stomach.

I was able to stave him off just long enough to clear the table of the dishes before he bent me over it.

With the kitchen still a mess, we showered together, then went back to bed. We napped for a bit, woke again, made love again. In the afternoon, I wiped down the table and did the dishes before making lunch. We watched a movie, curled up and entwined with each other, still naked under the blankets. Well, Noah watched. I fell asleep again toward the end of the movie, and only woke when someone knocked on the door.

"Shit." Noah tried to untangle himself from the blankets, but I was sitting mostly on top of him.

"Who's here?"

He shrugged. "Probably Dorothy. The buzzer didn't go off."

"One sec!" I called, and we raced to the bedroom to pull clothes on.

I dressed faster than Noah, who put on jeans and a shirt instead of just pyjama pants and a hoodie like I did. Dorothy was probably stopping by to ask for his help with something, so it made sense. I hurried to the door and flung it open.

"Sorry, I was..."

"Hey, Ms Perky. Nice sweater."

Diane leered at me. The scent of stale cigarettes hit me like a wall and it took everything in me not to gag. Worse, a gigantic man stood behind her. Between trying not to gag on the stench of smoke and trying not to balk at the muscled, tattooed giant grinning creepily at me, I was speechless.
