All sorts of X-rated services are popping up on Facebook Messenger - even if you're not looking for them
Facebook's Messenger app is suggesting prostitute and escort agency websites to users that are unlikely to be looking for them.
In an effort to transform its Messenger app into a useful directory, Facebook has widened its search facilities to enable users to find useful local companies as well as search all of its company pages.
But it's thrown up some unexpected results.
Thanks to the update, if you search for a mobile number it can pull up some risqué pages and services, an investigation by Campaign found.
Pages that turned up included escort agencies and call girl networks.

They show up alongside mainstream businesses.
A more deliberate search using an innocent word such as "girls" turned up even more call girl agencies.
When contacted Facebook removed some pages - including three "call girl" agencies on the grounds that they violated the platform's policies.
It told the SunOnline: "When pages or profiles are found to violate our Community Standards they are removed from Facebook.
"In this instance it seems that some pages could be found on Messenger.
"We are addressing this and are working hard to make sure it doesn't occur again. We are sorry it happened."
Now, however, entering the digits 073872 into Messenger's search bar brings up another escort agency called Sirohi call girls service.
Several shocking deaths and suicides have been appearing on Facebook after users live-streamed the events.
In some cases it took hours for the content to be removed.
The social network responded by announcing plans to hire 3,000 suicide and murder moderators.
The new recruits will watch Facebook Live streams to make sure that horrific videos are taken down immediately.
