Nötr gri filtreler, koruyucu/ultraviyole ve polarize filtrelerden sonra en popüler ve popüler olanıdır. Bu filtrelerin ana ve tek rolü, kameraya giren ışık akısını eşit şekilde azaltmaktır. Son zamanlarda üreticiler giderek daha fazla yüksek diyafram açıklığına sahip optikler üretiyor, bu nedenle fotoğrafçıların aşırı ışıkla uğraşmak zorunda kaldığı durumlar giderek daha fazla ortaya çıkıyor. Üstelik problemler bazen tamamen farklı türlerde olabilir ve bunların çözümü, tamamen farklı ışık geçirgenlik seviyelerine sahip filtreler gerektirir.
