Remake of the 2008 French series of the same name.
Great Acting, Great Comedy, Great Drama, Great Writing
This series is easy to underestimate especially if Brasil isn't your native country, but the story and character arcs are a smack down of the prudish nature of our history and insecurities and the dehumanizing nature of those who would demean those people that have found joy and happiness outside of that arc. The lead actress starts the series confined to a metaphorical prison of her own making and her self immolating attempt to confine the world to that same prison, and as time goes by she grows into a modern woman with increasing respect for herself and others. The characters within the series evolve over time with nuanced acting that supports subtlety of writing with this story set in the most unsubtle of worlds. Oh, and I discovery that I've been smiling so hard that it hurts every time an episode ends. Everyone should watch this as it has the potential to make anyone a happier person.

A great movie can often be endlessly rewatchable. If it resonates with a viewer and watching it makes for a great time, it could become an all-time favorite or a comfort movie to pull out and watch for a relaxing or reliably fun experience. However, not all great films are great for the same reasons, and some might provide an incredible or emotional experience that a viewer wouldn't want to go through again. RELATED: The Most Disturbing Movies of All Time There are a handful of films that are well-loved and overall fantastic achievements but are difficult to revisit for one reason or another. It's no guarantee that they're impossible to watch more than once, more that the idea of sitting through them again is difficult. They are all worth experiencing at least once, but no one would hold it against you if you felt once was enough.
Come and See is a Soviet World War II film that stands as one of the most disturbing and difficult to watch anti-war films of all time. It tells a nightmarish and brutally realistic story about a young boy forced into fighting and the various horrors and atrocities he witnesses during his struggle to survive.
As an undoubtedly powerful experience that's impossible to shake, returning to it isn't easy, despite how well-made and effective it is. The psychological impact of war is emphasized just as much as the physical destruction and death. The way the young protagonist is made to look older and older as the nightmarish plot goes on is terrifying.
Threads isn't technically a horror film, being more of a speculative war and drama movie about what would happen to England if it was decimated by nuclear war. If it did count as a horror film, though, it would have a decent shot at being considered one of the scariest in the genre ever.
Threads feels astoundingly real, and due to how plausible it looks and how graphic the imagery it is, it stands as maybe the most effective critique of nuclear war ever put on film. The relatively low budget and lack of experienced actors do nothing to diminish the film's power. Instead, they serve to make things feel more gritty and believable.
Ari Aster's debut feature endures as one of the best horror films from the 2010s. It works just as well as an intense family drama about dealing with tragedy and grief as it does a supernatural and psychological horror film. The way those two genres clash makes the film so tense and harrowing to watch.
It's arguably too effective at being both sad and scary to watch more than once. Toni Collette, in particular, is so fantastic in her role (that would have gotten her an Academy Award if the Oscars didn't hate horror movies for some reason) that it feels uncomfortably close to watching a real person deal with the tragedies her character goes through. It's a great horror movie and a tough one to watch, too.
Uncut Gems is a fantastically tense crime-thriller with an amazing Adam Sandler performance (in a career full of good and bad ones ). It's fast-paced, surprisingly funny, very quotable, has a strong supporting cast, and is excellently shot.
So why might it be hard to rewatch? Because it's genuinely one of the most stressful movies of all time, featuring over two hours of a man who doesn't know how to quit, chasing the adrenaline and highs that come from living life on the edge and gambling literally everything he owns. If you can handle the elevated heart rate, queasy feeling in your stomach, and sweaty palms all over again, maybe it's worth a second watch. But for the nervous types, once is probably more than enough.
One of the best films of 2020, Quo Vadis, Aida? is a disturbing drama about a real-life event, told using characters who were either real people or loosely based on real people. Its story deals with a devastating human welfare crisis, horrific war crimes, and a true and stomach-churning event that most people felt powerless to stop.
It's a film with little hope and serves as a warning about how hateful people who abuse power can get away with doing terrible things. An essential watch and one of the most powerful films of the last few years, without a doubt, but revisiting it and experiencing it again could be too much for most viewers.
Requiem for a Dream was one of Darren Aronofsky's earliest films and perhaps the first to give him a reputation for making intense, difficult to watch, yet compelling psychological dramas . It depicts — in unflinching detail — the way addiction takes over and ruins the lives of four individuals living in New York City.
While the style of Requiem for a Dream is bombastic — in terms of its score and editing — and could be seen as over-the-top, it is nevertheless a disturbing watch. It's massively successful when viewed as a film that aims to show the worst outcomes of getting addicted to drugs. It shows that sometimes (and surprisingly), a lack of subtlety can actually go a pretty long way.
Waltz With Bashir is a gripping and memorable auto-biographical film that's an animated film, a documentary, a war film, and a psychological drama all in one. Through its story of a man trying to remember his involvement in a war that his memory suppressed, Waltz With Bashir stands as one of the best examples of how the medium of animation isn't just for kids or families .
It's also surreal, dark, intensely personal, and unrelenting in depicting the physical and mental damage war can cause. Even at just 90 minutes, it's a demanding and emotionally exhausting watch, but the power it holds is undeniable. It's one of the most horrifying war films ever made and one of the hardest to go back to.
Hu Bo's only film, released after he tragically took his life in late 2017, is a four-hour epic that shows a day in the lives of four individuals dealing with their struggles and how their lives all cross over and interweave.
Favoring mood and character over a traditional narrative, An Elephant Sitting Still is an undoubtedly downbeat and tough film to watch. However, the naturalistic acting and excellent camerawork keep it engaging for its huge runtime. Knowing the backstory behind the film's director adds another layer to the already difficult subject matter, and it's the kind of film where absorbing it once in its entirety is probably enough for most.
In a streaming landscape dominated by true-crime documentaries, 2008's Dear Zachary is a film that eclipses all of them, in terms of its quality and emotional impact. It's a devastatingly sad true story about a woman who murdered her partner, fled from the law, and then gave birth to their one and only child, and the conflict that arises when the parents of the murdered father do everything they can to gain custody of their only grandchild.
As gripping and well-told as this film is, it's too heavy and stomach-churning to watch again. It's a testament to how effectively told this powerful story is, as it stands as a quintessential "watch once and never again" film.
Christiane F. is among the most disturbing movies about addiction and how it can fundamentally alter a person's life. While no film depicting the horrors of drug addiction is easy to watch, this one stands out for one main reason...
The main character is a girl in her early teens, and the film is based on a real-life story. The idea that something could happen to someone so young is a remarkably disturbing one, and due to Christiane F. pulling no punches in feeling as realistic as possible, it's not an easy film to rewatch.
Jeremy is an omnivore when it comes to movies. He'll gladly watch and write about almost anything, from old Godzilla films to gangster flicks to samurai movies to classic musicals to the French New Wave to the MCU. When he's not writing lists for Collider, he also likes to upload film reviews to his Letterboxd profile and Instagram account.
