The pandemic has truly changed everyone and everyone in irreparable ways, but if you're like me (an immunocompromised weirdo), the inability to head to the theater and check out a new release has been absolutely agonizing. There are obviously much bigger and more severe ways in which the world has changed, but on the smaller end of first-world problems, it's getting harder and harder to watch the rest of the world happily pose with ticket stubs while many of us are relegated to whatever is accessible on VOD.
The horror movie on everyone's lips the last month has been Ti West's highly-anticipated return to features, the A24 film " X ." Featuring scream queen on the rise Jenna Ortega, alongside Mia Goth, Brittany Snow, Kid Cudi, Martin Henderson, Owen Campbell, Stephen Ure, and James Gaylyn, "X" follows a group of actors in 1979 who are looking to shoot an adult film in rural Texas. The crew decides to rent out a boarding house owned by a reclusive couple on a farm, but once the owners learn what these young adults are up to, the crew finds themselves sucked into a fight for survival against a duo of "psycho-biddies." If you've been unable to see "X" in theaters, we've got some good news for you.
We've already reported that "X" will soon be arriving on Blu-ray Combo Pack (plus DVD and Digital) and DVD from Lionsgate on May 24, 2022, but if you just can't wait until May, "X" is coming to VOD on April 14, 2022. That's right, in just a few days, you can watch "X" from the comfort of your couch and without the risk of being annoyed by that one person who refuses to put their phone away in a dark theater or, you know, the pandemic.
For those who still haven't had the privilege of checking it out, "X" was an immediate hit with critics and audiences should be thrilled to know that West already shot a prequel film called " Pearl ." West also hinted that there's a good chance that "X" will be part of a trilogy , including a sequel film that he's currently writing:
"If people wonder what the backstory to 'X' is, well, I know all of it. That one will be about how home video has affected people. I'm very proud of these. They're super different and very out-of-nowhere. You won't need to see one to see the other but they do complement each other."
With two more films on the way, now is the perfect time to get on board with "X," because it looks like the A24 trilogy of films are going to be the talk of the horror circles for years to come. With David Gordon Green's " Halloween " trilogy coming to an end, a new sheriff is in town and their name is Ti West.

I actually forgot how good the original F/X was until i watched it recently It's a solid well made small budget film that's better then most action films as of late Production Companies: Orion Pictures and Dodi Fayed - Jack Wiener along with a Budget: $10,000,000 and Director Robert Mandel you get F/X The Cast is very good: Bryan Brown ( 'Rollie' Tyler) he's somewhat of a forgotten Australian actor he's extremely good in this role I could do without the scene with him in his tighty whities packing a major bulge though! Brian Dennehy (Lt. Leo McCarthy) Dennehy is awesome in this film he is such a great actor Diane Venora (Ellen Keith) I really liked her performance i wish they didn't kill her off in such a tragic way Cliff De Young (Martin Lipton) You have the dad from Disney's Flight of the Navigator being a very shady "bad" guy it's a bit off putting but, it's a slick performance until he up and disappears from the film Mason Adams (Col. Mason) Getting a tv legend in Mason Adams to do this flick is a shocking but, he's great in it Jerry Orbach (Nicholas DeFranco) Orbach is much younger then his L&O days and he plays a despicable mobster it's fun seeing him as a bad guy for a change Joe Grifasi (Mickey Leo's partner) Martha Gehman (Andy) Rollie's special effect partner she too is very good in this film until she also disappears out of nowhere Tom Noonan (Varrick) Tom Noonan is a terrific actor but, this is one of his most strangest roles he barley talks and walks around like Frankenstein or The Tall Man from Phantasm he does look super menacing though The plot on paper might sound a bit "thin" but, it's very engaging and fun a special effects master (Rollie) gets contracted into doing a "fake" hit on a mob rat He does it and things are not what they seem which leads to a bunch of dead bodies a corrupt police force and one honest cop (Leo McCarthy) Trying to piece together what's really going on This is one of those films any/all 1980's action fans should see for there self The F/X effects still hold up extremely well the opening scene with the mob hit is impressive on a production value not sure if this scene was all in one take but, it looks really seamless with one guy on fire for at least 5-10 seconds everything is practical and organic The climax with the assault on the mansion is a standout smart scene the balloon gag alone will make you go back and view again The music/score is also decent somehow a small budget film like F/X got the rights to use The Heart of Rock & Roll by Huey Lewis and the News but, Columbia ripped-off Want a New Drug for Ghostbusters My two biggest gripe with this film is the disappearance of both Martin Lipton and Andy by the final act the two are gone with no explanation Brown and Dennehy are only in one scene Is this blu-ray worth getting??? Without a doubt yes the PQ is really good the old MGM Catalog dvd was horrible it was like a VHS put onto a dvd disc I'm sure the F/X Laserdisc had a much better PQ then the dvd this is without a doubt the best you'll ever see F/X my only problem with the blu ray is the audio it's DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0 but, it sounds very much mono had to crank my surround sound up to 40 to get the most of it Almost all the sound comes from the center speaker (Which is why I'm sure it's Mono decoded in 2.0) KINO LORBER did throw in a few small extras (better then nothing i guess) extras include **Original Theatrical Trailers for F/X & F/X 2 ****Interview with Director Robert Mandel (This is a exclusive it's very interesting if you are a fan of the film i wish it was longer though! it's less then 15 minutes Not sure why they didn't get him to do a audio commentary but, this is better then nothing! **** vintage Making of F/X featurette (Not a fan of old featurette's but, this is super interesting it has some rough workprint footage in it It's also the featurette Orion Pictures used to sell the distributions rights for the film A great buried treasure from the era of excess 8.5/10

that's how old the movie is...they knew how to make movies. it seems to take place in new york. the beginning two scenes make you think mission impossible used this in their movie , when someone shoots out the fish tanks in a restaurant. then there is another scene shortly after this that reminds you of another movie. obviously this is the movie people got ideas from...a genius who knows how to do special effects is asked to help get a mobster into witness protection and he is very sorry he said yes, because the fbi tries to kill him during the rest of the movie.

Of course the movie deserves 4 stars, however I wish I could say the same for the DVD. What does it take for DVD company to release each DVD enhanced for 16x9 TVs? Nothing! Recently I bought a SONY BRAVIA 32 INCH display and I have a collection of over 600 Dvds. I learned now about "Enhanced for 16x9 TVs" and how important it is, I did not care about it or even know about it since I own a standard TV, however all my Dvds are Region 1 and in widescreen, I never buy fullscreen Dvds. So I did an inventory on my collection and realized the following: Out of 600+ Dvds, 42 are NOT enhanced for 16x9 TVs and they really look horrible when I played them on my PC. Anyway, according to my inventory. THE FOLLOWING MOVIES / COMPANY HAVE FAILED TO PRODUCE ANAMORPHIC OR 16X9 WIDESCREEN and I hope that these company will release them in the near future so that we can enjoy them on our TVs. MGM: Runaway Train Graduate No Way Out Prizzi's Honor FX Shallow Grave Thief House Of Games Dead Man Walking Misery The Eye Of The Needle Overboard PARAMOUNT: Private Parts 48 Hrs Coming To America Primal Fear The Ghost And The Darkness Breakdown UNIVERSAL: Day Of The Jackal Psycho (AVAILABLE IN THE RECENT HITCHCOCK'S BOXSET AS ANAMORPHIC) Vertigo (AVAILABLE IN THE RECENT HITCHCOCK'S BOXSET AS ANAMORPHIC) The Game FOX: Abyss (I WAS SHOCKED TO LEARN THAT MY 2-DISC IS NOT ANAMORPHIC, NOR IS THE LATEST DIGIPACK EDITION) Raising Arizona The Edge Great Expectations Rising Sun The Ref Romancing The Stone The Jewel Of The Nile ARTISAN: House Of The Spirits The Last Seduction The Last Emperor The Eagle Has Landed Bound PS: PLEASE ARTISAN, INSTEAD OF RELEASING 'BASIC INSTINCT' FOR THE 4TH TIME, WHICH MOST HAVE ALMOST THE SAME SPECIFICATIONS, CONSIDER RELEASING SOME MORE INTERESTING MOVIES WITH PROPER ATTENTION SUCH AS THOSE MENTIONED ABOVE. TOUCHSTONE / WALT DISNEY: Ransom What About Bob? PS: IT IS A GREAT NEWS THAT TOUCHSTONE ARE RELEASING 'ENEMY OF THE STATE', CRIMSON TIDE' AND 'CON AIR' IN EXTENDED UNRATED EDITIONS ON MAY 16. I WISH THOUGH THEY DID THE SAME WITH 'RANSOM' WARNER: 91/2 Weeks Presumed Innocent NOTE THAT WARNER STUDIO IS RELEASING ONE OF THE BEST 2-DISC SPECIAL EDITION SUCH AS 'SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION', 'HEAT', 'MALCOLM X', 'DOG DAY AFTERNOON', 'ALL THE PRESIDENT'S MEN' AND MANY MANY MORE. The reason why they don't release every DVD in widescreen enhanced for 16x9 is beyond me since soon Widescreen Tvs will replace standard ones. IT IS A RELIEF THAT AMAZON IS NOW STATING WHETHER THE DVD IS ANAMORPHIC OR LETTERBOXED.

Now your're probably wondering why would I put this person's name in the caption..? Well if you know your history. Then you know that the man who helped produce this movie .. was the same man who died with the late Princess Diana on August 31 1997. Well there was a time in his life that he produced (bank rolled) films in Hollywood. The son of the Egyptian Billionaire Mohamed Al Fayad .. was the former owner of HARRODS department store in London,England. Dodi also produced Chariot's of Fire,F/X 2 and Hook, etc. The movie was okay .. and I have seen this movie some decades past. Brian Brown we all know him from the hit movie "Cocktail" with Tom Cruise.. The late Jerry Orbach we remember him from "Dirty Dancing,Murder she Wrote and Law & Order" .. Let's not forget the Queen her self... New York City..! What a city .. filled with the million's of resident's .. This movie is filled hi-jink's ... and let's hope that they don't remake this one ..?

A fun action movie with a fairly basic plot. A little mission impossible here and there. Best watched know as little about the plot as possible.

This movie rates 6 stars, however the DVD release is only rated at 1 star, so the average is 3. I really hate to say this, but MGM should be ashamed to release a DVD of this poor grade. A movie of this caliber deserves much better. In 1998 Orion Pictures was going through some tough times when MGM decided to buy them. So, this truly historic film wasn't release on DVD till the year 2000. MGM must not care much about its Orion Pictures library because they used the same Analog master that Orion Pictures developed way back in 1987 for release on VHS!!! No real widescreen, just a letterbox 4.3 with stereo sound. The picture has poor contrast & low light levels, but it gets much worse if you have a Hi-Def Flat Screen TV because you have to "hit" zoom for the picture to fill your screen. When you do this, the picture loses what little detail it had. I'm just wondering if MGM does all of its Orion Pictures this way. In other words...this film has never been DIGITALLY REMASTERED for DVD. This was the breakout movie for Bryan Brown, who plays the role of Rollie Tyler. A "Special Effects" expert that is set up & deceived by members of the "Witness Protection & Relocation" service. With sniper's after him & nowhere to go or hide....all he has is his F/X expertise to keep him alive. Brian Dennehy plays a police detective who spent 6 months going after a Mob Boss, only to see him released to the WPR & will stop at nothing to find him. This is one of Brain Dennehy's best acting roles ever, if not the best. Also stars Jerry Orbach (of "Law & Order" fame) as the ex-Mob Boss. The soundtrack to this film was preformed by The London Symphony Orchestra, & the closing credits song, "Just An Illusion" is one of the best sounding end songs I've ever heard! If fact, the studio wanted to name this film "Murder by Illusion", but the Director's wanted "F/X". This may be hard to believe, but F/X set a record as the most rented video from 1987-90. It upsets me so much what MGM has done to this "sleeper" masterpiece that I'm seriously thinking of starting a website named "[...]". I'm sure with Amazon's support & to all who have enjoyed this classic, maybe we can get enough signatures to get MGM to re-release this DVD like they should have the 1st time. You can bet IF it had originally been a MGM film, it wouldn't have been treated in this fashion. To sum things up...a great movie, but don't buy the DVD unless that's the only way you have of seeing it!!!!

Bryan Brown is a top special effects artist asked by Cliff De Young of the Justice Department to help hide a mafia boss. Things go wrong for Brown however and he finds himself on the run in New York City. In order to escape he obviously uses his special effects skills which is the draw of the film. Some of them are simplistic like throwing a mannequin out the back of his van during a car chase which stops the cops cold because they think it’s a real person. Others are much more ingenious. There’s even a big unexpected twist at the end which makes F/X a fun ride.
