Ashton Kutcher prepared for his role by speaking with Warren Beatty who played a similar character in Шампунь (1975). He also read Neil Strauss 's non-fiction book "The Game", which is about pickup artists. See more »

Nikki :
My whole life it was obvious I was going to end up in this city. I don't want to be arrogant here, but I'm an incredibly attractive man. I can't help it, I don't try to be, I just am. When I was a kid my mother's best friend used to tell me that I was gonna be a little heart breaker. Turns out she was right. Her husband came home from work one day and found us fuckin' on the Stairmaster. Los Angeles, California - that's where all the beautiful little heart breakers go to live the ...

Unacquainted Emily and Oliver join the mile-high club together on the way from LAX to NYC--end of story. Except that they keep meeting constantly over the next seven years..
In Los Angeles, Nikki is homeless, car-less and closing in on 30, but he's amoral, good-looking, and adept in the sack, moving from one wealthy woman of 35 or 40 to another, a kept boy-toy. His newest gig, with Samantha, an attorney whose house overlooks L.A., is sweet, although it's unclear how long she'll put up with him. Then Nikki meets Heather, a waitress. Is the player being played, or might this be love? What will Nikki discover?

Spread is an unusual little film. I say 'little', as it's essentially a low budget character-driven drama that is some how being commercially packaged as a rom-com. A quick glance at the credits reveals that this isn't your average Kutcher vehicle: it's directed by Scotland's David Mackenzie of "Young Adam" and "Hallam Foe" fame. Make no mistake, the Kutcher we see at the start of the film is very familiar: arrogant, uptight and utterly beautiful. But as the run-time flies past, we somehow warm to his character even though he's getting more sex than most of us will get in a lifetime. And here's the good news: Kutcher's performance is fairly astounding. He manages to reveal the humanity in his deeply flawed character with notable subtlety and a distinct lack of cliché. Kutcher's (many) sexual relationships portrayed in the film are brutally realistic: the modern and perhaps unromantic realities of casual sex are not dressed-up in any cheap Hollywood moralising. This is also evident in the overall tone of the film: there are many moments that could have descended into schmaltz, but a sharp edge it maintained on just about every line of dialogue. Kutcher fans: beware. This is a real departure for the actor, but thank goodness: it's a movie with all the superficial gloss of Hollywood and all the invention of an indie flick.

Young, charming and handsome, Nikki (Ashton Kutcher) lives the good life in Hollywood by giving rich, older women plenty of what they want: sex. While his latest conquest, Samantha (Anne Heche) is out of town, Nikki throws a party and meets Heather (Margarita Levieva), a pretty waitress who's cut from the same cloth. After Samantha throws him out, Nikki and Heather begin a game of sexual one-upmanship, but the stakes are higher than Nikki realizes.

In a very spotty drama, Kutcher basically plays a male gigolo that has a close encounter with karma when he meets the right woman. Almost every character in the film is unlikable and there is little for an audience member to get behind, even at the very end.

Geez, what I put up with for Anne Heche... She's the best part of this seedy concoction where every woman is portrayed as a needy idiot. Seriously. If it was this easy to get every woman I met to bump uglies & come back for more no matter how they're treated, then I'd...well, let's just let that sentence trail off. It simply don't happen this way, even in Los Angeles.
Ashton Kutcher is in perpetual need of a Fisherman's Friend, hoarsely mumbling his lines while sleepwalking through his part as a gold-digging sexual predator. The kicker is that the film wants us to feel sorry for this jerk, unless they are trying to use him as a cautionary tale. Either way, it ain't happening. The only other bright spot is the appearance (and briefly nekkid form) of Rachel Blanchard from the import comedies Peep Show and Flight of the Conchords.

In "Spread," Nikki(Ashton Kutcher) came to Los Angeles with his own share of hangups thinking it would be something out of a Van Halen music video(?!?) but soon became disillusioned. Now, he is homeless and without car, so he seduces Sam(Anne Heche), a thirtyish entertainment lawyer, so he can stay at her place, which was once supposedly owned by Peter Bogdanovich, so he can maintain his hustler lifestyle of having sex with as many young women as he possibly can, sometimes while watching football.
"Spread" is the perfect example of how they do not make them quite like the used to, in this case, classic romances about whether or not a cynic can fall in love. Nikki was jaded long before he got to Los Angeles, so his complaints about the city do not really apply. Just to reinforce this point, there is a shot of a freeway sign pointing towards Sunset Boulevard. Sure, the photography is well done with a neat tracking shot to start things off but there is little wit or intelligence to show for its efforts. I don't have a problem with the sex but sometimes it becomes about too much information. Worst of all is Ashton Kutcher in a charisma free performance, unconvincing that any woman could ever fall for him. And what's up with his voice?

Ashton Kutcher plays himself in a story about what Ashton Kutcher most likely did for a living before he got famous (and what he does all day for a living now that he's Demi Moore's professional kept boy). The main character is not empathetic (and you don't need to be a pretty boy to empathize with one, just write the pretty boy better) and his "journey" never feels significant. Cinematography and acting is decent (besides Ashton who I've already established is just playing himself) but there's nothing of substance here. Waste of time and just a fun "take a risk" project for Ashton. I suppose his fans will like it as he has many partially nude scenes.

Despite occasional detours into surprisingly dark territory, Spread overall is an ineffectual celebration of vacuous Los Angeles high life rather than a deconstruction of it.

Shallow, melodramatic, pretentious and wildly misguided, it's also ambitious, entertaining and rather funny.
Kutcher is a credible and potent leading man with an easy address to the camera. He carries off the movie with some style.
Letting things slide into a sort of low-calorie moral vacuum, Mackenzie hasn't so much nailed LA's culture of skin-deep gratification as produced an advert for it.
The ghosts of Shampoo, American Gigolo and even Alfie (both versions) cruelly haunt the ripe and raunchy frames of Mackenzie's Spread - another "shallow-stud-in-need-of-redemption" movie that pales in the face of its predecessors.
The basic elements only amount to a mildly entertaining film.
The tale of a guy who's just a victim of being a jerk, coping with the horrible curse of being good-looking.
The very impressive Spread deserves to be a cherished gem.
The promising beginning deteriorates into a baffling shambles, with each character changing their entire personality at least once.
Spread devolves into your predictable, well-worn morality tale, and while there are beautiful people and emotional quandries aplenty, what we're really left with is a turgid but flashy romcom.
