My Five Minute Friday prompt this week is— Fill . This largely unedited “rough draft” form of writing stretches this perfectionist, in the best of ways. I write for five minutes on a given topic. If you’re interested in learning more about 5-Minute Fridays , check out our new hostess, Kate Motaung’s site. Or, click on the link at the bottom of this post. As you read my simpler Friday posts, I hope you’ll join in the conversation!
The idea of filling in the gaps is one I love. I pray it when I’m praying with a friend who’s struggling with motherhood, or being the wife she needs to be, or another area she feels a lack.
I pray it for myself when I know I’ve blown it with my kids.
Only God can really fill in my gaps. He knows them better than anyone. He knows the areas where I”m weak. Where I fall down when I should be standing. God fills in the gaps in my life.
I picture a piece of lava rock, black and with porous holes cratering it. Then, I picture God, like the sand that fills in those holes just to completion.
God completes me too, when I let Him. He fills me up in my weak areas. Where holes have been carved out by the currents of the world. Wounds have been etched into my heart. Lying thoughts have worn grooves into my mind.
God can fill each of these with His perfection. He strengthens me where I’m weak. Or, He redeems what I’ve blown in some way.
God fills in the holes in my understanding of Him with His truth. When I’m yielded to Him, He can waylay the world’s currents and fill me instead with His love, giving me eyes to see the world as He does.
He can fill the heart-wounds with his healing touch, with his balm of Gilead. He restores what the moths have eaten. He makes even better the attempts I’ve made at doing my best.
He smooths out those lies grooved into my thoughts, and replaces them with His truths. He gives me what I need to walk by them.
What about you? What fills you? How has God filled gaps within you?

Well, hello! I came back, here, to say hello to you as well. Thanks much for the encouragement you left on my blog moments ago. I read your words here — and I’m filled!! Seriously…Encouraged. Blessed. Thank you!!
PS: as much as I enjoy these types of posts … the stretching kind… I say they always FILL me with trepidation as well… the perfectionist in me, too! lol!!
Bevy, thanks so much for stopping by here. And for your encouraging words. Yeah, this Five Minute Friday exercise helps me release some of those perfectionistic tendencies. Have a fulFILLing weekend.
I don’t know if God has filled in my gaps. He’s certainly drawn my attention to them, and I think He’s said, “Deal with it. Fix it or work around it. Just deal with it.”
My gaps, and my wounds, are what makes me what I am. The scar tissue that’s grown around them may inhibit motion, but it’s a mark of days that maybe were not so good, but that I did live, and have to remember.
To that end, I’ve always enjoyed fixing broken dishes, and putting them back on the shelf. The seams and the repaired cracks give character and a certain pathos to these inanimate objects. I can identify with the. (Barbara can’t stand this!)
Have you seen “Avatar”? The ‘villain’, Colonel Quaritch, has a badly scarred face that his first day on the planet Pandora gave him. He could have had it fixed, but chose to keep it, because it reminds him of “what’s out there”.
I can relate to that. And I always kind of liked the character. He looks after his own, and there’s grace in that.
You bring up an interesting perspective, Andrew. Some wounds don’t get healed until we enter the other side of the veil. I think sometimes, God gives us what we need to live with the wounds. I’ve got a couple of wounds He’s told me He’s leaving because their pain drive me to Him. Sometimes I think that’s how He fills me. By meeting me in that place where I need Him and being more than I expected in the moment, if that makes sense.
You’re right in that some of the scars are remembrances of the character that came out of a circumstance lived through. Thanks for adding this perspective. I appreciate it!
When I read your posting, Jeanne, I was reminded of the attack, many years ago, on Michelangelo’s “Pieta”.
The hammer-wielding vandal did much damage, but gentle hands and wise, learned minds fitted the broken bits together again. They were joined not with epoxy only, but with care and love, bot for the sculpture and that which it represents.
“Pieta” will never be the same, but neither is it changed. Its scars are no obstacle to its meaning, or to its enduring message of Love.
Thanks for the beautiful example. I remembering hearing about the vandalism to the Pieta. The way you described the pieces being bonded to the masterpiece with care and love (along with epoxy). It’s a good visual for us. The marks life leaves may never be completely erased, but they can reveal character, and they can point to God’s love imprinted on us. I’m so glad you shared this example!
A beautiful reminder … you post seems to have completed the thoughts in mine, made them more clear.
Thank you and blessings to you.
– Andrea
Andrea, thanks so much for stopping by. Your post was beautiful too. May God’s word infuse you with his power, love and a sound mind! I hope your weekend is restful.
Jeanne, I love how you reminded us through the lava rock that God fills our gaps. My husband stopped by unexpectedly this morning and prayed with me. It was one of those days when I needed an extra boost. God filled the gap through my husband.
I’m so glad your hubby gave you a boost this morning. When my husband prays with me in the morning, it makes my day. And yes, it fills my gaps too. I hope your weekend is a good one.
Thanks for stopping by, Wendy!
It’s a good thing there’s a lot of sand in the world. Sometimes I feel like it would take a desert full of sand to fill in the imperfection gaps in my life. Sand of grace~ what a gift from God! Thanks for reminding me!
Love that picture, Mom. Sands of grace . . . Thankfully, God has all that’s needed to fill in our our gaps.
Thanks for your kind words, and for stopping by, Tanya!
