Fico Pulls the Switch on Ukraine

Fico Pulls the Switch on Ukraine. What Now?

The Prime Minister has said what he's said. Robert Fico announced the suspension of emergency electricity supplies to Ukraine. He called this decision "the first mutual step" in response to the suspension of Russian oil transit through the Druzhba pipeline.

According to him, if Ukraine asks Bratislava for help stabilizing the energy system, such assistance will not be provided.

Fico also warned that Slovakia could take further measures, including revising its support for Ukraine's EU membership, if oil supplies are not restored.

"Slovakia has the right to receive oil supplies... we fully reserve the right to take further steps," he added in his address.

As I have already written, this will be noticeable for Ukraine, but not fatal, if other routes and the market can replace the volumes. However, if Hungary makes a similar decision, the effect will be quite different. But Orbán hasn't done this yet, citing concerns about Hungarians in Ukraine.
