Fgura buying blow

It was a hard-earned victory by the Yellows, in front of a sizeable crowd at the Centenary Stadium, who were treated on a real spectacle in a tightly contested game. Fgura most definitely deserved more, but Zabbar were more clinical and took their chances well. It was Fgura who opened well, in search for an early goal with Zabbar pushed back, relying on the counter-attack. After James Scicluna and David Oliveira threatened with some long-distance attempts, Zabbar took the lead on 34 minutes when Hubert Vella tapped home a Scicluna corner from close-range. Fgura replied with goalscoring opportunities through Jurgen Debono and Ofufu Ibeh, who both failed to find target. After the change of ends, St Patrick took control of the match and doubled on 69 minutes thanks to a well-placed shot from inside the box by Samuel Buhagiar. However, the side of coach Kevin Vella hit back immediately with a header by substitute Luca Mallia. Marsa took only 70 seconds to open the score when Attard goalkeeper Miguel Caruana fumbled the ball on a harmless looking effort and Augusto Caseres was on hand to tap the ball home. Attard struggled at the back as Marsa were all over the place and it was no surprise that they added a second goal again through Caseres on fifteen minutes. Then five minutes from the break Caseres obtained his hat trick when he volleyed home after a well-executed Marsa attack. On the resumption, Marsa eased the pressure with coach Anonam resting some important players. However, Marsa went close again with a Rodriguinho scorcher rocketing against the upright. The siege continued and the fifth goal arrived on 70 minutes when James Brincat fired in the roof of the net from close range. Lija Athletic Zurrieq In the late Friday night kick off, Lija inflicted the third successive defeat on Zurrieq, who started the season so well with four wins in a row. The team of coach Saviour Debono-Grech proved to be only a shadow of the one at the very start of the campaign, as Lija were clearly the better side throughout the match, like the scoreline rightly indicates. Albanian livewire Erjon Beu played a blinder, not only scoring two great goals but working hard for his team, displaying some excellent passing. It could have all gone very different as Zurrieq were awarded an early penalty kick when Lija goalkeeper Luke Bonnici allegedly bringing down Ivan Francisco in the box. The Portuguese striker stepped up himself but Bonnici saved in style, a setback for Zurrieq from which they never recovered. In the attack on the other side that followed, Courage Omoruanzoje missed incredibly from close-range after some good work by Brazilian winger Makalysten, who had to leave the field injured at half-time. On 12 minutes, Beu received from Leo Agius on the edge of the box, beating Zurrieq goalkeeper Krassimir Zammit with an accurate grounder on the turn, a splendid opener. On 22 minutes, Zammit did well to turn a top corner free-kick by Beu into a corner. On the other side, Nigerian centre-back Glamour Eziefula could have equalised on 33 minutes with a free header from a set-piece but Bonnici was at the right spot to save. The second half was most definitely less entertaining, with Lija still managing to add two more goals. Just after the hour, Beu sent substitute Miguel Micallef through with an excellent pass but Zammit blocked his attempt. On 69 minutes, the Athletic added a third goal with Beu taking maximum advantage of a defensive Zurrieq error, heading into the empty net from close-range. In the attack that followed, Francisco blasted high for Zurrieq from an ideal position after being sent through the middle. The team of coach Joseph Galea are now ranked third, on the point mark with Melita. For the Amateurs it was return to winning ways after their four-goal drubbing suffered against Zabbar. On the other hand, for Luqa this defeat interrupts their five-game positive streak. Luqa were the better team in the first half and took a deserved lead on 20 minutes when a Jeremy Cassar dipper hit the crossbar and from the rebound, Alan Abdelrahman was on hand to hammer the ball home. Luqa could have added further goals in the first half as Melita were in apparent difficulty, but they failed to add up to their tally and then paid dearly for this in the second half. On the resumption, Melita were a different proposition with Luqa gradually fading out of the game. Melita eventually drew level on 73 minutes with a close-range header from substitute Antoine Attard, celebrating his return to the team in style after a lengthy lay-off due to injury. Eight minutes from time, Brazilian forward Andre Carlos scored his sixth goal of the season with another header after receiving from Santiago Martinez, arguably the best player on the field of play. Pieta built a two-goal cushion inside the first half an hour but Zejtun had a strong comeback and could have also snatched a winner near the end of the match. Pieta took the lead after only seven minutes play with a good pass from Zean Leonardi that put Yuto Morita through and the Japanese striker made no mistake in front of goal. The match was balanced but Zejtun suffered another blow on 26 minutes when Arsene Cilia Mumford's handling infringement was punished by a penalty and from the spot Kian Leonardi made no mistake. A minute from the break Zejtun deservedly pulled one back when Fahad Bardiro ran loose on the left and fired a low shot that finished in the corner of the net. In the second half Zejtun dominated the proceedings pushing for the equaliser and they managed to obtain this on 69 minutes when substitute Josiah Mallia scored with a cross-shot that completely deceived goalkeeper Cini. Jairinho could have decided the match in favour of Zejtun toward the end of regular time but missed from an ideal angle. Swieqi United St Andrews The derby between Swieqi and St Andrews on Saturday night was target for the former, who displayed an outstanding performance over their rivals in an entertaining match. It was the third victory for the team of coach Pablo Doffo, who leapfrogged Luqa in the rankings and are now in a mid-table position with 11 points. On 22 minutes, Swieqi were awarded a penalty when Jamie Scerri dribbled past a few defenders but was allegedly fouled by Liam Scicluna. Nigerian striker Ibrahim Salis stepped up, who comfortably beat Jake Pisani from the spot. St Andrews could have equalised a few minutes later as Roderick Taliana's cross was headed over the crossbar by Arthur De Moura. Swieqi held a lot of the ball while Luxol were dependent on counterattacks which were however not effective. Just after the half hour mark, St Andrews were awarded a free kick in a dangerous zone just outside the box, taken by Christian Mercieca with Jean-Claude Debattista saving in style. Just before the break, Swieqi doubled their lead with a stunning shot by Robinson Blandn which ended up in the top corner. After lemon time, St Andrews tried to get back into the match with Taliana coming close just before the hour with an attempt which sailed inches over the crossbar. Swieqi had their chances as well but both sides failed to find the net in the remaining time left. A much-deserved victory for Swieqi, who inflicted already the fifth defeat of the season on a struggling St Andrews side. Senglea Athletic Tarxien Rainbows This was a match to forget as Senglea Athletic and Tarxien Rainbows fired blanks in a low-profile scoreless draw. The result gives a true picture of what happened during the 90 minutes of play. Goal-mouth actions were scarce and neither side really deserved to win the three points at stake. Both sides tried to prevail but both defences always had the edge and the final outcome was a logical one. There was simply not much to report as the match did not have any highlights. Senglea lacked punch up front with Daneel Abela having a few attempts with playmaker Sebastian Perdomo being blocked out of the match. The Rainbows had the same problems up front, with both Santiago Moracci and Jean Carlos having an off-day. Compliments however to both rear-guards, who never put a foot wrong. But with four teams going down at the end of the season, both sides need to improve considerably up front if they do not want to be dragged into the relegation tussle this season. With this victory, the team of coach Rodney Bugeja lifted themselves up from bottom place into 13 th , leaving now St Andrews, Attard and Msida below them. In the early stages, the unmarked Allan da Silva came close to open the scoring as his shot from inside the box was well saved by Msida custodian Andre Spiteri. Minutes later, Zebbug escaped as there was a superb shot from outside the box by David Ejiofor hit the crossbar after a good solo run. On the half hour mark, Miguel Perez Jimenez broke the deadlock for the Rangers with a simple tap in from an acurate cross by Allan da Silva. Just before the break the same player put his name on the scoresheet with a shot in the right corner from outside the box, doubling the lead for his side. More of the same after the break with Zebbug pushing Msida in their own box. Ayrton Mizzi put the game to bed in the 54th minute from a rebound putting the ball into the net from an ideal position. On 58 minutes, Zebbug goalkeeper Jamie Azzopardi committed a foul in his own box. However, Romeu Romao, who had just entered as a substitute, missed the spotkick with Azzopardi saving. Msida were demoralised and were even reduced to ten with three minutes regular time left on the clock when Kurt Zahra was given a straight red for an off-the-ball incident.
