Fever and Thermometers

Fever is a normal and necessary manifestation. It is the body's natural instrument to defend itself from bacteria and viruses. These microorganisms, in fact, survive with difficulty at temperatures higher than 38 degrees and fevers are the way to defeat them. The increase of temperatures is the sign that our child's immune system is working well. For this reason, it is not opportune to administer antipyretics to a child of just a few months old: let's let his immune defences work freely. The paediatrician must be consulted to make sure of the correctness, in case of administration, of the dosage of the paracetamol in case the fever increases to more than 38.5 degrees or if the child shows discomfort and restlessness. Measuring fevers must be carried out at certain hours: in the morning and late afternoon; never after meals or in the evening when the body's temperature is normally higher. Some physical and environmental conditions can influence correct measuring: being in a room that is too hot or having drunk a hot beverage, for example, can increase the body's temperature by a few degrees.

For correct and reliable measuring, you must have a good thermometer. In alternative to the classical mercury type, permanently taken out of production by the law, it is possible to use other types of thermometers, they work in a different way but they are equally precise and reliable. The digital thermometer is very appreciated for its practicalness; it is available in various colours. It is a device that has a very thin tip to place in the area in which the temperature is taken while at the other end there is an electronic sensor to register the body's temperature. The digital thermometer can be placed in the mouth as well as under the armpit, but these types of measuring presuppose that the child is already quite big and therefore collaborative. In the case of very small children, it is best to find the fever in the anal opening, placing the tip of the thermometer delicately and anointing it with almond oil to ease the discomfort. All you have to do is wait a minute, after having pressed the button, to read the temperature.

Another way to take temperatures is the infrared thermometers. It was projected in Italy; this thermometer is characterized by a special ergonomic shape, so that it can be "placed" with precision where the temperature must be taken. The device receives and elaborates the radiations emitted by the human body at a distance, turning them into, in just a few seconds, temperature degrees. The infrared thermometer detects fevers from the forehead, placing the thermometer on the temple or keeping it at a distance; or in ears, according to the so-called "tympanic measuring". It needs a certain manual ability and, especially in the ears, it can detect values that are not correct for the presence of inflammations of the temple or for ear infections.
