It claims to have almost 6 million members. And it's suddenly in the spotlight because of the recent disappearance of a Chinese graduate student at the University of Illinois.
It is FetLife, a website for bondage and kink fans. The FBI says suspect Brendt Christensen visited a FetLife forum called "Abduction 101" before kidnapping Yingying Zhang on June 9 in Urbana.
She remains missing and is believed dead. Christensen was arrested Friday but has yet to enter a plea.

FetLife has not commented publicly about the case. The site has not responded to multiple emails sent by CNN.
It says its members have shared more than 30 million photos and videos and joined more than 7 million discussions.
"Kinky heaven!" it says on the site's landing page.
"FetLife is the Social Network for the BDSM, Fetish & Kinky Community," the site says. "Like Facebook, but run by kinsters like you and me. We think it is more fun that way. Don't you?"
The site's "about" page gives physical addresses in North Vancouver, British Columbia, and in Nicosia, Cyprus.
That page shows photos and monikers for 16 people. Two say they live in Antarctica. Several say "I help people."
To access content, you must create a profile, which is free, by entering a nickname and selecting a gender and sexual orientation (each with 11 choices, plus "not applicable").
You can choose from several dozen roles, including dominant, kinkster, swinger and brat.
The Illinois case is not the first time FetLife has been mentioned in a criminal investigation.
A Haverhill, New York man was charged in April with making and distributing child pornography. Authorities say an undercover FBI task force officer first came into contact with the man on FetLife.
And in Australia, a man who used the pseudonym "The Wolf" on FetLife has denied charges he raped a woman in 2015 at a hotel after meeting her on the site.

FetLife is a new addition to the homepage list , and an often overlooked craigslist personals replacement.
What is Fetlife ? On the homepage you'll see a good summary of the site: "Like Facebook, but run by kinksters like you and me." Basically, it's a great personals alternative if you're into BDSM, Fetishes, and Kinks.
Here's how to use Fetlife in a way that will get you similar results to craigslist personals.
First, you have to create an account and tell Fetlife your gender, sexual orientation, and 'role' there's a lot of options:
After you create your account you'll be asked to follow a few kinksters near you. Following people means you will see their posts on your timeline and be able to message them. They can choose to accept or not accept your messages.
After this you'll be asked to upload a photo (optional) and then verify your phone number. One big advantage of fetlife is that aren't many fake accounts because of the phone verification. The profiles also make it easy to see who has a reputation and who has been around for a while.
There's a few main features in fetlife that you'll want to start using to find hookups:
Explore - This tab lets you search for new people to follow. The people you see will depend on the orientation and role you chose when creating your account. You can go to your profile settings to change your orientation and role.
Places - This section lets you look for members in a given location. This is a good one for finding people for casual encounters near you.
Fetishes - Instead of searching by place, the fetishes section lets you find people that are into the same kinks that you are.
Groups - In the groups section you can browse groups to follow. This is pretty similar to the facebook group section. One of the ones you should be following is the classifieds group, where people post sex ads, just like craigslist personals, but with even more edginess.
Events are another cool feature of Fetlife. You'll see all the meetups of kinksters near you. A lot of these are at bars, coffee shops, or even sex shops and clubs.
If you use the classifieds section of Fetlife and are up for some kinky stuff, then Fetlife will make a great craigslist personals alternative. Like with all sites for casual encounters, be careful and start off by meeting in public places.

I immediately imagine the horror that they must feel asking.
Fetlife.com (sometimes misspelled fettlife) is a website that is essentially known as “Facebook for Kinky people.”
The back of the website is black and the headlines are in red coloring!
It appears evidently NSFW (or Not Safe For Work) from the first moment you lay eyes on “Fettlife.”
Just because you know what fettlife is doesn’t make you part of the community.
Like regular Facebook, Fetlife.com isn’t really something to be afraid of.
Treat fetishes, kink, and sexuality mindfully, comprehensively, and with respect.
The reason for this is because there is still a notion that people who are kinky have a history of “abuse,” therefore, you may get questioned as to why you want to join.
Local community events on Fetlife.com can help you feel like you are KIND of part of a family though. When you go to the website, you will see you have to make a login.

When you get on your page, make a bio!
Do not put provocative or face photos until you know what you are doing. At first, just explore anonymously. Explore and say you live far away.
You don’t even have to use your actual name!
Make sure you practice safety, integrity, radical honesty, and erring on the side of CAUTION! They are still going to be strangers on the internet at first, so practice discretion.
