This report documents the presence of a vertical vaginal septum in four female rhinoceros including a primiparous animal that had previously given birth to a full-term stillborn offspring 14 months prior to vaginoscopy.
Similar to the rhinoceros cow, the reproductive tract of the female elephant is too large to undertake OPU as in the mare, and a vaginal approach is unfeasible due to the anatomy of the vestibulum.
That 1) yes it made them ovulate 9 out of 11 times, and 2) when a rhino does, she always ovulates between 36 and 48 hours post treatment. One female failed to ovulate on two occasions, but rarely is anything perfect.

White rhino reproduction in managed care has been a difficult puzzle to solve, and it is still unclear why some female white rhinos fail to reproduce. SEZARC has been involved with trying to understand white rhino reproduction for many years, including conducting studies of behavior, endocrinology, and genetic diversity. Most recently, SEZARC has teamed-up with […]

Rhinoceros Reproduction. Here are some particulars of the rhinos' reproductive anatomy, mating habits, and how they raise their calves.
Female Reproductive Anatomy and Clinical Aspects The female reproductive organs in the rhinoceros consist of the vulva, clitoris, vestibule, vagina, cervix, uterus bicornis, oviduct, and ovaries.
Rhino ultrasound exams to visualize ovaries cannot be performed vaginally or abdominally as in other species due to the location of the reproductive tract within the female. Luckily, the angle of the ultrasound probe within the rectum of the rhino allows for a bird's eye view of the majority of the reproductive tract.
There are lot of misconceptions around how the vagina works and how you should be caring for it. Here's what you need to know.
Rhino reproduction is a slow process, as the mother carries one calf at a time, gestation period is Between 14 and 18 months (or, 475 days)
The Sumatran rhinoceros (Dicerorhinus sumatrensis) is the smallest of all the rhino species. It is one of the rarest mammals in the world and is in imminent danger of extinction. That would be the rhino. Specifically, a female rhino's cervix, a long canal leading into the vagina, swerves and squiggles all over the place.

The vaginal wall of the tapir and horse is thin, whereas the vagina of the rhinoceros was reported to be thick and muscular (Zainal-Zahari et al., 2002) with longitudinal folds (Miller, 2003).
To accommodate it, the reproductive tract of the female rhino is also quite long, with many twists and angles of its own that make it hard to get an inseminating probe into the uterus.
A rhino's cervix is also very long: When Pennington first attempted this procedure, on a different female, she ran out of catheter before she reached the uterus.
Reproductive tracts or tissues from five male black rhinoceroses (Diceros bicornis), two male white rhinoceroses (Ceratotherium simum), two male one-horned Asian rhinoceroses (Rhinoceros unicornis), seven female black rhinoceroses, and six female white rhinoceroses from multiple institutions were examined to characterize their anatomy and histology. When a female rhinoceros has managed to avoid all those reproduction obstacles: she has a normal oestrous, has no diseases of the genital tract preventing conception, and has established a stable pregnancy, dystocia and stillbirth remain a substantial risk even if the female and the foetus are healthy up until the beginning of parturition.

In this context, this study examined 48 southern and 6 northern white rhinoceroses using ultrasound and faecal hormone analysis to elucidate causes for female reproductive failure and to determine whether long non-reproductive periods have a detrimental impact on genital health.

Despite many successful mating taken place since 2002, no pregnancy occurred in the female housed in the Sumatran Rhino Sanctuary (SRS) Way Kambas. Since the female shows a regular pattern of ovarian cycle, indicated by hormone analysis and ultrasound examinations, the fertility of the male Sumatran rhinoceros in this facility (named Torgamba) has been questioned, and was thought to be a major ...
Abstract Vaginoscopy using a 10-mm, 30° forward viewing rigid endoscope was used to evaluate the caudal reproductive tract of four subadult southern white rhinoceros (Ceratotherium simum simum). But there was something odd going on: the vagina twisted in the opposite direction of the male's. In other words, this vagina seemed to have evolved not to accommodate the penis, but to evade it.
Conservationists are taking heroic measures to restore the fertility of a three-footed Sumatran rhino. But some ask whether this is the right way to save an endangered species.

Their job today is to help them conceive through artificial insemination, a procedure that entails collecting the semen from the male rhino and then inserting it into the female.
Introduction Most advances in our knowledge of female rhinoceros reproductive physiology can be attributed to three prodigious discoveries.
The overall size of the reproductive tract, especially the vagina and uterine horns, and the extremely tortuous cervical lumen will present obstacles that must be overcome when developing artificial insemination and embryo transfer proceduers for use in rhinoceros.
A comprehensive histological assessment of southern white rhinoceros ovaries from both mature females and a neonate provides insight into follicular development in this species.

A male's dung smells different than a female's, and the dung of a female in estrus gives off a different odor than that of a non-reproductive female. Multiple or communal deposits of dung are known as middens, essentially serving as local "websites" or "Facebook pages", allowing rhinos to keep up with their neighbors.
Can't tell your vulva from your vagina? You're not alone. Here's a clear, labeled vagina diagram and guide to anatomy — minus the awkward biology class.
