Female Serial Killing: Review and Case Report

Criminal Behaviour and Mental Health Volume: 16 Issue: 3 Dated: 2006 Pages: 167-176

Andreas Frei ;
Birgit Vollm ;
Marc Graf ;
Volker Dittmann

After reviewing published literature on female serial killers, this article considers the usefulness of the findings for assessing a case presented.
Of the few relevant studies identified (n=15), some attempted to categorize female serial killing according to patterns of and motives for the homicides. The most common motive was material gain or similar acquisitive gratification; killing for some type of physical and/or emotional sadistic pleasure/release was apparently rare in female serial killers. No consistent theory of serial killing by women has emerged, but psychopathic personality traits and abusive childhood experiences have been consistently found in studies of female serial killers. In contrast to men, women serial killers tend to know their victims, often partners or helpless individuals in their care. They usually use covert methods of killing. Their offenses are commonly committed with a man or men. The female patient described in this article did not fit these general characteristics of female serial killers. She committed her crimes against strangers at sites geographically distant from her home, acting alone and using violent methods. The literature search used EMBASE (1980-2004), MEDLINE (1966-2004), and PsycINFO (1967-2004), using the search terms "female," "serial," "multiple," "killing," "killer," "murder," "homicide," and "manslaughter." 1 table and 31 references

In society, women are touted as doting mother figures with compassionate natures - the gentle fairer sex.
So what drives women capable of giving life to succumb to their inner monster and k*ll innocent men, women, and children? What type of m**ders do they commit, and what are their methods of choice?
Below you will find the worse female serial killers in history . These femme fatales ki**ed people for either self-defense or horrific alternate motives.
Each of these killers' profiles, bios, and histories is detailed below.
Female serial killers are rare, and their victims tend to be spouses, children, and the elderly. The m**ders they commit tend to be low profile, with poison being their preferred choice for killing. Other methods used by female serial killers include shootings, stabbing, suffocation, clubbing, and drowning.
Material gain is what drives female serial killers to commit multiple m**ders. However, attention-seeking behavior, cult participation, sex, a need to overpower, and personality disorders are also leading causes of turning women into mass murderesses.
Each killer has her desires, triggers, and biases, and often the specific reasons are known only to the killer herself.
Female Serial Killers are most seen in the role of a medical nurse, home aide, caretaker, or doctor. The " Angel of Death " often kills the sick, invalid, or vulnerable to control and dominate.
Female serial killers are classified into the following nine categories:
A greedy black widow will take out her entire family, including her husband, children, and other family members.
The revenge -seeking female serial killer has deep-rooted anger for those who have thwarted her in her gains, causing her to commit mass m**ders.
The sexual predator obtains s** and then kills her victims, often due to s**ual abuse in the past.
Partners in crime often consist of a male and female serial killer partnership. Intelligent and resourceful, profit or crime killers will k*ll their way to get whatever they desire.
Questions of sanity include delusions, paranoia, schizophrenia, and other mental disorders that may be responsible for a k***ing spree.
Unexplained characterizes those female serial killers who k*ll randomly and without motive, baffling law enforcement.
Unresolved crimes are those believed to be the work of a woman but with no clear evidence behind the reasons.
Since a female serial killer's reason for committing crimes is much different from their male counterparts, police and law enforcement agencies often have difficulty putting them behind bars.

^ "As soon as the little girls are born, they are plunged into the water in order to drown them or force is applied to their bodies in order to suffocate them or they are strangled with human hands. And something even more deplorable is that there are servants who place the girl in the chamber pot or in the basin used for the birth, which is still filled with water and blood and, shut away there, they die miserably. And what is even more monstrous is that if the mother is not cruel enough to take the life of her daughter, then her father-in-law, mother-in-law, or husband agitates her by their words to kill the girl."
